Title: help needed........ finding a burial?
Post by: *sara* on Saturday 17 November 07 20:10 GMT (UK)
hi

my mother-in-law's father left them in the 1960's and she searched now and again to find him - to no avail, i have since found a death record for him.
i have not told her yet, i am sure she will be upset :'(

i would like to be able to tell her at the same time where he was buried or cremated so perhaps she could visit to get closure.

So my question is this...... apart from trailing around cemetries in the local area, is there any way i can find out where his burial or cremation took place?  and specifically if there is a grave. i have phoned the local registar and eventually got through to someone who searched in one cemetry and came back with a no, but he must have been buried or cremated somewhere.

can anyone give me advice - i would be very grateful.

If you know the town or village where he died, you could try enquiring at the local crematorium (there will probably only be one serving a big area, which is why I suggest trying there first).  If that's a blank, then you could try writing to local vicars (enclose an s.a.e.), spreading out in a wider and wider area from where he died.

If you know he died in one town, but originally came from somewhere many miles away, you could try the same searches there ?  Some people go back/are taken back to their roots for their funerals ...

If the death is registered in wirral there might be an orbit for him in the weekly newspaper.Or an article inside the paper,if he died elswhere the same applies. They usually give where the service was and if it was an article it nearly always gives where he was to be buried.

thank you for all your replies,
i did think this wasn't going to be any easy task.

He died in blackburn, lancashire which is where he was born aswell. i don't know where he lived before he died.  I did phone someone ( ithink it was the crematorium centre) and was told there are 3 cemetries in blckburn and without knowing which one it would be difficult.  i managed to persuade him to check plessington cemerty but the answer was no.  i have also tried to search local papers on line.

i will have another go and maybe try writing to the vicars as suggested.

many thanks

According to the Council website, Cemetery records are held at the Blackburn Central Library, see here:

I am not sure if that will be allowed Allison :-\,i know he is deceased but he might have family. It is also recent,in genealogy terms. If it isn't allowed Sarah can send you a P.M :)

 P.S    Sara
because His Daughter is still living you might need her permission to make her fathers name public.A delicate situation, yes?

hi all

his daughter is my mother in law and it is she who has asked me to look into this, so i do have the permission of his next of kin i suppose.   ;)

Alison, i would ever so grateful for you to have a look around.  i have looked at various websites and haven't come across anything.
so his name is Harold Westwell born 30/9/1918 and died aug 1996 both blackburn.

i know we cannot put info about living people on here but he is deceased, and as i enjoy family history my MIL asked me to help, i just want to give a place to visit when i tell her is is deceased.

regards

I cant find a burial for him but i suggest you try the crematorium

West Park Lodge, West Park Rd, Blackburn, Lancashire BB2 6DG Tel: 0845 6066612

I have found countless burials for my ancestors in the last week just by ringing the crem - they will tell you there and then if he was buried there.

Do you have his death certificate?
If not you need to get it for the address that he died at...then look that up on streetmap and see which is the nearest church. If he died in a home and that is what is registered on the certificate, then ring the home and they will be able to give you more details.

Once you have his address start looking at the churches in that area - if youve had no luck at the crem. Once you find him, ask for a map and a plot number and then you can go straight to the grave.
He sounds like a Blackburn born n bred lol so i would say you have a good chance with the crem. Start there
