Hi copeland,

I'd be grateful if you could look up Gibson - specifically in the West and East Yorkshire areas. May be associated with Randall Williams or Proctors.

Thanks,
Jill

Hi,

I would be very grateful if you could look up James James born in 1875 in Kent. I do believe he was a "showman" in 1891 in Strood. Trying to find him and his family in the 1901 census. His wife was called Alvinea Eastwood Breeds. (her parents we not married) Thankyou Carol.

Hi Eilleen

I have checked the victorian arena Volume 1-2 and 21st century Circus folk and there are no entrys for the name Exton

the books are circus performers and artisis so if they where behind the sceens helpers they will not be in there

Also checked the 1841, 1851, 1861,1871, 1881, 8191, 1901. Census records and the name Exton does not appear in there either

if they only did a short spell with the circus in between the census returns they would not appear on them

sorry i can not help with that name

Title: Re: Circus Look Ups

circus folk are not on the normal census records as they where classed travellers so they had a seperate census done which includes fairground gypse hawkers and general travelleres

Hi Lorraine,

I'm surprised that they appeared from their caravans to participate in the Census.

Some circus people hate meeting officials 8) Did most of them actually give their real names?

How does one go about finding travelling people and members of Circuses touring in Ireland? Would they also have a special census?

Plenty of national censuses have been conducted in Ireland. For any genealogist hoping to find records from the 19th century though, the tale is one of frustration. The first four Irish censuses (1821-1851) were largely destroyed by fire in 1922; all that survive are fragments. As if that wasn't pain enough, the government destroyed the returns from 1861-1891. That means you're completely out of luck for 19th century censuses.

unless they where touring england, scotland, wales when the census was conducted

I live in Ireland and know all about the various methods of destroying census records. I find it astounding that some were destroyed on instructions of the Government and within the past few days our present Government has managed to lose a massive amount of records and now have the police searching various premises around the country in the hope of finding them.

You referred to Travellers Census Records. Were they separate Census for Travellers or were they extracted from the completed Census?  I knew about the Census for Ships in Port but not the one for Travellers till you mentioned it.

Hi,  Sorry to tell you this but I have spent the past ten years reseaching my family and there is not a seperate census for anyone. One Census done every ten years but what is different is that you will find them living in Tent/Caravans/in Pub Yards/and Lanes.  The address is shown next to the nearest house.  A good example of this is my Lee family from Kent: 1861 Census living under Tent.  Just keep looking but most of the research has been done by Pauline from Canada and there are many links onto her site. Maybe you have found this index of hers - as it done for Circus/Fair/Gypsy folk and was on the Galloper Site for many years - also there was a site called Passing Through (I gave both sites each others details and they linked up) which listed Gypsy census info.

I am at the moment trying to put all my information into a readable search - do contact me if you any of the interests below could cross over with your research.

Hello Copeland.
My aunt (who was known by a number of names) worked with the Wallendas in 1934 and 1935 whilst they were with Bertram Mills circus. She was known as Winifred Innes Smith,Judith Innes Lloyd, Judith Innes Gordon and Judith Lloyd. She married Phillip Kries  on 21st October, 1934, in Oxford whilst the circus was in Oxford, and they were photographed riding one of the elephants in the circus parade. Phillip Kreis was one of the Wallenda artistes.
Have you got any further information re the Wallendas of that time? She and Phillip travelled to Germany and joined Circus Gleich, but she and Phillip divorced shortly afterwards. I would be grateful for anything that you could tell me.
Thank you.

Hi

I'm desperately trying to find out more information about my Gran's mum. Her name was Annie Lizzie Peers but on my nan's birth certificate she is named as Amy Peers. My nan was told that she ran away with the circus and my nan is under the impression it was Bertram's circus. She also was told that she got together with (not sure if she married) someone called Taylor (not sure of the spelling). It would have been after 1931 as my nan was born then.

How do I find out this information? I've been trying for ages to get information about her. She was born in Doncaster, in 1906. I'm not sure if she emigrated or anything  but I'm trying to trace her through the circus/Bertram's link. She was spotted by my nan once in Torquay when the circus was there.

Any suggestions would be extremely helpful!!

A very desperate Gemma!!

I am looking for a Charles Henry Smith who was a Circus Manager or Agent for a Travelling Circus certainly in the period 1899 to 1905. His home was in the Birmingam area but travelled with the Circus. I am trying to find the name of the Circus which could have been "Ginellis" or similar. He was not at his base in the 1901 census so I guess he must have been on the road. Any suggestions as to lists of travelling circus at that time or travelling census information for circus?

Please would you be kind enough to look up the name Guyett or Guyatt in connection with the Hounslow Heath Fairground around 1930-50?
The Guyatt's originally came from the Charlton, Andover, Hampshire area, so I would be grateful if you find anything on them. After moving to Hounslow, Middlesex in the 1850's they changed their name to Guyett.

My grandad James Washington Durant was in the Circus, his dad Andrew I've found in the 1871 census of Penzance stating Gymnast aged 19 born Manchester Lancashire, but no record of his father James or his mother Mary ann, both appear to have died very early in Andrews life, both gone by 1872, very frustrating not being able to find them anywhere, can anyone help with anything at all, would be most grateful for your time. He also has an entry for James Durant ........ "clown and acrobat. Born 1872. appeared in all the big circuses, since 1886, travelling in Britain, Europe and America. Leader of the famous 'Flying Aeronaughts Troupe'.

Died 1 Nov 1926 aged 54yrs. Durant Brothers, nondescript contortionists and comedians were with Stephenson's Circus in 1929 and may have been his sons"

Many thanks for the prompt reply, I actually gave John turner this information for his book, but I didn't realise that there was a Billy Durant, so it seems that I have to do a bit more digging.
Happy easter to you and yours.  :)

Hi there Copeland

Oral family history states my grandfather, George BEARD was a trapeeze artist in the circus. He was born in Swansea in 1885 and although I located him on the 1891 census as a child, no success with 1901 or 1911 census returns.

I do know he was in Swansea in 1916 as have a marriage certificate for him - this first wife died in 1926 and George married again in 1930 - that marraige certificate palces him in Swansea again.  I also know he enlisted in 1918, in Cardiff with home address given in Swansea where his first wife Elizabeth lived. His 1916 marriage certificate indicates he is now employed as a dock worker so I can only guess that the period invovled for his circus life, would be before 1916 when he married.

I'd be grateful for any leads you might be able to uncover based on such very sketchy details.

Cheers....
Lynda NZ

I am looking for any further information on a Mr Otho Twigg. Otho held various positions (mainly equestrienne) within many circus’s (Sanger’s, Henglers, Ohmy’s, Forepaughs, Lockharts, Barnum &Baileys) he eventually became the Ringmaster at the London Hippodrome when it opened in 1900, in 1910 he became the ringmaster at the New York Hippodrome.
Otho married a Margaret Harriet Davies in Cardiff in 1886. Margaret was an Equestrienne bareback rider, using the stage names of ‘Maggie Sivado’ (Davis spelt backwards), Marguerite Doris and Maggie Twigg. Otho and Margaret had 2 daughters that I am aware of, but sadly both died in infancy.
Margaret’s younger sister Pauline also worked in the circus as a Equestrienne too and married a John McCambridge (My family's connection) – Pauline’s stage name also varied over the years but these are two that I know off – ‘Polly Sivado’ (once again Davis spelt backwards) and ‘Madame Olva’. John and Pauline McCambridge had 4 children that I know off – John b 1888, Margaret b 1889, Otho b1897 and Pauline b 1904.
I believe the two sisters and their respective families worked with each other throughout their lives all over Europe and The USA. I have found several references to all of these people in ‘THE STAGE ARCHIVES’ and ‘THE ERA ARCHIVES’ – but would truly love to find a picture of any of them!
Otho seemed to have a very prominent role and was great friends with Marceline Orbes, surely there must be a photograph somewhere!! Any help would be truly amazing - I’m based in England but I know they worked a lot in the USA!

Hi - I am researching my family line of William Smith born St Pancras 1849 or 1847 depending on which record you look at - William performed under the name Atrato and was a trapeze artist - I am interested to know any thing about his early years as I cant find him on the census before 1881 - I know that he performed in partnership with Henry Gerretti and then with Thomas Culleen from some info on the Era site
but I dont know if he started out with anyone else or where he was before 1881
pls could you look him up
thanks debra

Hi,
Could you please look up a Ruth Stanley who may have been in the circus in the early 1900S.  Probably closer to 1920's plus 10 years or minus 5 years. Originally she was from Missouri.  The circus that she was in, traveled to Missouri. She would leave tickets for family members when in town.  It also seems that she may have been married while in the circus so not sure if the last name is correct.  Is that enough information?
Thanks!

Hi copeland

Can you please do a look-up on "Jim Morton's Wonder Circus" performing from the 1920's onwards. They were Blackpool based and consisted of eight ponies, one elephant and twelve dogs.  The remnants of the circus performed as a dog troupe in an old marionette theatre in the Marine Gardens in Fleetwood in the 1960's. They seem to have appeared in provincial theatres though of course may have tented as well with an elephant!!

Thanks

Peridot  :)

Just saw a posting re Stephenson's travelling troupe/circus and thought it worthwhile posting my interest.
I'm looking for so many travelling show people. 10 yrs ago I had no idea that I related to travelling show people on both sides of my family, explains a lot though!  .

I've just come across Lydia Julia Pool approx 1870 to 1898
Lydia was a vocalist born Birmingham, married Albert Robert Peace born 1871 a Contortionist.
I have Lydia's family background but can't find anything at all for Albert Pearce but...
On the Irish 1911 Kilkenny census I found a Kathleen Pearce travelling with Lydia sister Annie Louise Pool born Birmingham (1871 death 1914 Birmingham)
Annie partnered John Linehan (born Cork Ireland 1971) John was a concert promoter and Travelling Showman but I know nothing of his parentage etc.
On the census is:
John Linehan aged 40 yrs Showman
Annie Linehan aged 37 yrs wife born England
Mina Linehan  aged 14 yrs daughter born England
Annie Lydia Linehan aged 5 yrs daughter born Dublin
Clarence Rosini  (Employ)aged 24 born England Showman
Frank Power aged 15 yrs (Employ) born Co Waterford
Kathleen Pearce aged 27 yrs (Employ) born England.

I have never been able to find any further details of Annie and John's daughter Minna and Annie Lydia.

I'm assuming Kathleen Pearce was the sister to Robert Albert Pearce.

Clarence Rosini came from a theatrical family, his mother was Hannah Hughes Chadwick and she founded the Stephenson's after her husband died, returning from Ireland, Clarence toured with them, I believe the performed at Sandringham.
To go Back to John and Annie Linehan, Annie had an older daughter Bessie Minna she married my gt grandfather Thomas Brennan in Co Cavan Ireland 1907. Thomas was also a travelling showman and concert promoter, he was The Connaught Bazaar and Connaught Concert Company.

Can anyone give me further info on any of the above?  ???

Regards Jackie.

Hi there,
I am looking for any information on F.W Oscar Vetter, his wife Rosa and their children. I know that the family were circus artistes and later Music Hall Artistes. F. W Oscar Vetter was born in Berlin, Germany in about 1851. I am not sure when he joined the circus but I know that he married a lady called Rosa Steinbecker and had, according to the 1911 census, seven children.  I only know of  three children. F W was known as Oscar and he has an entry in Turners' Circus guide. I know that in 1911. Oscar was living in London and was about 59 years old. I have found a death certificate for Oscar in German records for 1918 although not the cause of death, but I cannot find any records for Rosa's death in German or in U.K records. Did they emigrate to another country perhaps?  Are there any other circus trapeze artists that I may be related to.  I would also like to try and find out the name of their circus act and possibly which circus they belonged to. If anyone has information about this family, I would love to hear from you.
Thank you.  KarolynM.

Please could you look up the travelling circus census for Thomas henry Eugene M Sylvester born in 1964 (possibly listed also as 1963 depending on the cencus). He was also known as Thomas Montgomery Sylvester. He owned Sylvesters Circus (Sylvesters 2 ring circus, Sylvesters modern circus) and also a company called  Cinema Circus and Varieties Ltd.  He also went on to be the creator of Bradford holidays at home.
In the family there were rumours he was either sold or adopted to a circus when he was young but no one know who his parents were, and in 1877 at around 13  he was spoken about in a newspaper clipping regarding Atrato and Allen's grand circus and stated as the apprentice of William Smith Atrato. Thomas was an equine performer here. As the years went on he became a proprietor.
In one of his circus programmes I have he has Claude Onny and John fossett, Fred Ginnett, Potters worlds greatest flying gymnasts however there is not a lot on him bar what family members can tell me.
I would be really interested in hearing anything anyone knows about him.

Hi. I don't know if you ever got any more information about THES, but I have researched him a little as he married the sister of my 2xggf. I have found him on the censuses up to 1901: 71 in Sneinton, 81 in South Shields, 91 in Wigan, 01 in Southport. I have the details if you still need them and I am working with a descendant of THES at the moment to try to fill in some gaps. Let me know if you need  the details.
