Looking for any links to the Tew family of Leire Leicester. My Great grand father was Thomas Tew he moved to New Zealand with his wife Annie Fairbrother in 1911.
Thomas was born in 1863 he was one of 10 children, Henry 1865, Elizabeth 1867, Arthur 1868, Annie 1870, Fanny 1872, Catherine 1874, Emma 1876, Ada 1878 and John 1884.
George Tew (1835) and Elizabeth Bray( 1840) were his parents.
Any information on George's brothers and sisters would be great, I have his father as being John Tew (1813), but no maiden name for his mother Elizabeth.
The father of John Tew is proving to be a hard job! I found reference to a Joseph Tew born in 1783 in Leire and his wife a Jane Furborough are these people the parents of John?
I have many photo's of the Tew family here in New Zealand and a number of good stories about their new life here.
I would love to share with any other family member all the information I have.

Hi Sue and a very belated Welcome to RootsChat

Sue.
That covers all of George's siblings (who appear on the censuses).
I am fairly sure that Harriet married Allen Mawby in 1871 and appears as his wife in 1881-1901. I am also fairly sure that Patience married Frederick Arnold in 1883 and appears as his wife in 1891-1901. I think that Comfort died in 1887, unmarried. I think Ellen possibly married William Burdett in 1865 and appears as his wife in 1871-1901. Eliza may have married Amos Jarvis in 1858. If so, she died in 1880 and Amos remarried in 1883. There are possible sightings of Henry in 1861, Thomas in 1861-1881 (married to Annie ?) and Frederick in 1871 -1881 (married to Margaret ?).
I hope that some of this is useful to you. If you want any later census information for some of these people please let us know.

Thankyou so much for that info on the Tew family. I had came to a brick wall with my grandfathers family as he came to New Zealand in 1911 and most of the family history stayed in England.
I may of been barking up the wrong tree with John Tew's father and mother, I thought they may of been Joseph Tew and Jane Furborough of Leire, as there were only about 250 people living in this villiage around 1800.
But can not confirm this unless I have a birth certificate.
I am restricted on access to many Birth, Marriage and Death indexes as we do not have a bankcard, so I have been relying on the familysearch site for most of my info.
My grand father was Harold Tew, his father Thomas Tew (son of George Tew) was a bit of a naughty lad, he had two ladies in his life, both sisters. He married Annie Fairbrother and had nine children to her, but in between children he had seven to her sister Edith. Hence the move to New Zealand leaving behind Edith and the other seven children all named Fairbrtoher not Tew.
Makes great reading the Tew family. Lucky for us none of our great grand fathers mischief behavior has rubbed of on us.
I did not have any of John Tew's, children's marriages, that is a real surprise.
Thankyou for your kind efforts
Sue

Great work! I have Comfort Tew working as a nurse in the 1881 census. Hope this is the right one.
No one calls their son's John in the family any more, they all have met a early death, even right up to 1962. Very interesting to see there were twins.
Hope you are keeping warm? We are having summer now, long days on the beach.

Hi Sue
I have digressed a bit. I started to look for Thomas and it took a while but I think that I have eventually found him and his family on the 1891 and 1901 censuses.
I have also found the following passenger list which matches the census data but it is a year later than you said. So before I type out the census entries (if you do not already have them) can I just check that these are the correct people who sailed...

Tom Tew 48
Mrs Tew 48
Stanley Tew 17
Harold Tew 15
Dorothy Tew 13

Maud Tew 20
If this is the correct family I will let you have the other details tomorrow if you want them.

Cheers Annie
It is a pity that I cannot "get on a roll" with my own (possible) relations ;D
-
Yes that is my grandfathers family. A bit blown away by a new name (Edwin) I do not have him at all on the family tree.
I also have the 1861 census in front of me and on there is John Tew, but at number 44 there is a William Tew 51, I wonder if he is the brother of John?
I would like the 1901 census of Thomas, he has been a real devil to track down.
Thankyou to everyone for their help.

Very interesting, would be interesting to see who were at home with Thomas and Mary Tew on the 1841 census. Wish they used different names instead of Thomas, Henry, George back then.
So the Joseph Tew I thought may of been John's father is not! Still better hold on to his details just in case. Who know's Joseph could be the brother of Thomas.
Leire must of been full of Tew's. 8)

Sue :-\
I cannot readily see the following children of George and Elizabeth Tew after the 1881 census. There are some possibilities but I have no great confidence that they are the right people.
Henry born c1865
Elizabeth born c1867
Annie born c1870
Fanny born c1872
Catherine born c1873
Nor can I readily see the following children of John and Elizabeth after 1881.
Henry born c1843 (I cannot see him in 1871 either)
Thomas born c1845
Frederick born c1853
Perhaps it might be beneficial if you were to start specific new topics for them to see if anyone else can find them on the 1891 and 1901 censuses.
If you state what it shows on the 1881 census for them (and give the census reference) and ask for look ups, I am sure that several other site members would be pleased to try and find them.
:D
I have (I think) managed to find the other children of George and Elizabeth and details for them will follow.
Incidentally, are you aware that on Genes Reunited there are three people (called Stephanie, Stephen and Carol) who seem to have the family of Thomas Tew and Annie Fairbrother included on their family trees?

Thanks DS, you have made progress for me. I am not a full member of Genes Reunited at the moment. Will get around to it next year.
Herbert Tew was the only brother that did not come to NZ in 1912 he married Gertrude Petty and died in Auckland 1946, Edwin was a name I have not came across before, but my Aunty said that would of been her uncle Bob.
All of the Tew son's in NZ joined the forces for WW1, and all survived, married and had children.
There was a rumor of a scroll or family bible that went missing after it was brought over from England, this certainly would of had more info about the family.

Hi Sue
Thank you for your Personal Message.
With regard to your first question, the 1841 and 1851 censuses for Thomas and Mary Tew do not show any additional people living in the household. It is just them and their son, William, as I showed earlier (Reply #25).
On the second question, I have not been able to find anything more than you already know about William Merricks and Mary Johnson. Perhaps if you start a specific new topic on the Staffordshire board it might attract someone who has access to some other Staffordshire records which are not available online.
Sorry :-\

Do you think the Tew family lived in Leire for some time?
Not to certain as to when the villiage came about, but the family where there until the early 1900's.
Thanks for your help.

Greeting’s again Sue…..
You asked :~ " Not to certain as to when the villiage came about, "
Leire is mentioned in the Doomsday Book = Legre.
Very likely to be named after the old river “ Lagre” a Celtic name
which was a tributary to the river Soar which
" Lagra caster " ( old name for Leicester ) stood on.
Other TEW families noted whist trawling the registers
John & Elizabeth TEW. He a bricklayer.
Joseph & Jane. He a wool comber.
John & Mary TEW.

John Tew and Elizabeth (Sarah) nee Ball. I had John down as being a railway labourer from the 1841 census. But then again he may of changed jobs.
I wonder who the others are?
There is even a William Tew living only a few doors down from john Tew in the 1861 census, I thought they may be brothers, but William was two years older than John.
I did not realize this is a large family, as there is not many Tew family here in New Zealand.
I was looking into Thomas Tew for his father, I have little resources only BMD and family search, there is a reference to another Thomas Tew born in 1748 married to a Anne, may be the wrong one, need to comfirm with parish records.
Thanks again

HI im interested in a family named Tew.Thomas Tew Married an Annie Fairbrother anyone have any info on them.

My grandmother was Nellie Tew, daughter of Joseph Tew from Burbage, Leicestershire. That's about 10 km from Leire. Joseph was born in 1852 and married Elizabeth Wells. His parents were John Tew and Mary Ann Hands. Do you think we have any connection?
-
Hi
Sorry for any late reply but I have computer trouble and using limited access to one.
Sorry the names you said cmmcg do not ring any bells at this stage, I do have a few Joseph Tew's on my tree. I will have another look once I get things back and running. My Tew family basically lived in the Leire area around the mid 1800's. I am in contact with another Tew re-searcher who may have these connections in Burbage, please give me a few days to get back on track.
I presume efairbrother is someone I am already in contact with.
Cheers

Hi im not sure will have to look the Tew family up.Seems to be a few Tews about.

Hi Suzy yes we are already contacts. :)

Hi
Major computer trouble at my end. Looks like a new computer is called for. Sadly earthquakes are to blame, as our computer is only 3 years old.
Have backed all files up onto a stick, will have to print many pages to keep a written form of the tree.

Hi, I have been tracing my family tree and my husbands side I found (Sarah) Elizabeth Tew.
The Tew line stops at 1886 and changes to Fairbrother.
My husbands grandad is a Fairbrother.
