Ancestry now has the Australian Electoral Rolls from 1901-1936
-
Do you have any idea if all the years are on ancestry?
Jean
-
I have been trying to get something to come up for my long established families, but the only thing I get is one reference to a
"Federal Directory for Newcastle and District 1901" .
......dee
-
I should have had a look before I asked the question about which years. This is what the website says:
"This database currently includes electoral rolls for the following states and years:
Australian Capital Territory: 1928, 1935
New South Wales: 1930, 1936
Northern Territory: 1922, 1929, 1934
Queensland: 1903, 1905, 1913, 1919, 1925, 1930, 1936
Tasmania: 1914, 1919, 1928, 1936
Victoria: 1856, 1903, 1909, 1914, 1919, 1924, 1931, 1936
Western Australia: 1901, 1906, 1916, 1925, 1936"
Jean

Thanks, Jean.....absolutely nothing yet for South Australia. :(
And you need a World Subscription to access it.... :-\
.....dee
-
How do you mean a "world subscription" - are there different levels ?
Jean
-
Yes....I just have a subscription that allows me to access UK records......much cheaper. And they are the records I want to access most.
.....dee
-
Dee I can access them and I only have the UK sub - which I have just cancelled - effective on 28thNov. I am busy tracing all my rellies - had lots of success so far.
Cheers
Cando
-
That's strange, Cando...because I got the padlock this morning.
I'll try again.......
....dee
-
i can access them and i only have the u.k. subscription.
-
Can any-one give me the actual name of the database you are using..... I don't seem to be having any success whatsoever....
......dee
-
Dee, I only have UK subscription too so when the page comes up just click on Convicts link and the Electoral Rolls should be listed in there
Cazay

I can't find a Convicts link......
I think I must be brain dead today..... :-\

Hi Cando. :D
Thanks for that.....but the problem is that I do not get that on my Homepage for Ancestry for some reason. But it doesn't matter, as Perth Tiger posted me the link, and now I have worked out how to get into it. :D

YIPPEE
I am having a ball on this site now, but like Dee had to wait until the cricket was finished and tea was done ( it is a bugger that they want to eat isn't it?) and had a very good time perusing those rolls.
If any one wants a lookup just ask,
regard Jenn

And hopefully when they do an update, there will be a couple of rolls from South Australia on there. ;)
......dee ....who has now found the first trace of her grandfather's brother in Australia other than his death as a pauper during the Great Depression. :D :D :D

Hi Jen
Terrific resource - nearly fell asleep at the computer as I slowly worked through my lot. Really helps 'put meat on the bones' of the rellies. I may have to consider re-joining ancestry after my sub expires in 9 days time.
Dee - SA always seems to miss out :(
Cheers
cando

Me to Cando up till mignight, then couldn't sleep with all the details running around in my head!
My one criticism is that they don't have ages which would be rather cool,
ah well cannot have everything.

Dates of birth would be even better, Jen. We don't want much, do we? ;D ;D ;D

A number of these are now on Ancestry
this is helping me a lot (I am tracing forward)

I don't have access to this site .. and wondered for those who do - could you tell me .. when you click on 'view record' - what information does it show please? (background: looking for someone who went to, I believe, Fremantle, Perth circa 1920's from Monaghan, Ireland)... just want to figure out if its worth my while subscribing... Thanks so much. Kind regards, Karen

Silly question really, but what parts of Victoria are covered in the 1903, 1909,1914 and 1919 years please? Does it mention all of Victoria? I have family in a small country town in those years and would love to know if they are mentioned, or is it only the cities.
Sorry to appear so dim, but it's not just an appearance I'm afraid :( :-\ ::)
Cheers Lones
-
Hi Lones,
It's the entire state of Victoria for the years mentioned. I tried looking for some small and regional towns all over the state and they all came up (eg Merino, Sale, Omeo, Cann River, Nhill, Swan Hill). They were just some that I could think of at the time to check for.
Debbie
-
Hi Debbie, thank you :)
I wonder if Waitchie is mentioned. I had lots of Dunstans and Smiths living in Waitchie in the early part of the century . Would it be too much to ask if anyone can please check them out for me? Even one or two would be really appreciated, but please don't go to any trouble if it is too difficult to do
Thank you
Lones ;D
-
Lones, can you give me a given name for one of the Dunstans who would have been of age to be on the Rolls? Waitchie itself doesn't bring up something.....but if it is a little place it may come under a larger district or subdistrict....probably need to find that first so that we can find anything for Waitchie.
.....dee
-
Hi Lones,
I couldn't find anything obvious for Waitchie, but think it might be covered under Swan Hill in the Wimmera district.
Wondering if these are yours in 1909 (this seems to be the first year with any Dunstan listings in Swan Hill, Wimmera).
Dunstan, Annie, Fish Point, home duties, F
Dunstan, Edward Hedley, Fish Point, Farmer, M
Dunstan, Edward James, Fish Point, Farmer, M
Dunstan, John Glanville, Fish Point, Farmer, M
Dunstan, Mary Jane, Fish Point, home duties, F
The next entry is: Durose, Herbert, Waitchie, Labourer, M so looks like we might be on the right track.
If these are correct, I can track down the other years for you.
Debbie
-
Hi Debbie ;D
No I'm afraid they are not mine :(, fish point is I believe north of Swan Hill, Waithie is to the west. They may come under Ultima or Gowanford or even the area Tyrell (not sure of spelling). I appreciate your looking for me, thank you. I am at work so cannot check out spelling etc. Waitchie is kind of between Swan Hill and Sea Lake. I am not really sure where Fish Point is, but assume it would be on the Murray river. If you don't mind I will check out my records at home and get back to you. I am off to Melbourne tonight for a shopping weekend ;D ;D, so will not be able to reply until Sunday night, is that okay? I really am grateful to you for checking for me, some of my family are elusive little devils ::) ::)
Thank you for your trouble
Lones :) :)
-
Hi Lones,
Have fun in Melbourne this weekend.
I tried searching a bit later than before and now think we might be getting somewhere!!
1919, Wimmera, Ultima
Dunstan, Margaret, Waitchie South, home duties, F
Dunstan, William Henry, Waitchie South, farmer, M
Mr Durose follows on once again, so there must have been a change in sub-districts between 1909 and 1919.
Debbie
-
Hi Debbie :-*
That's them, that's them ;D ;D ;D well done, they are my great grandparents... Yippeee, I am pleased thank you. I would have thought some of their children would have been mentioned too by then, 1919, they would have all been young adults. Do you know what age you had to be to vote? One of their sons had already been away at war by then, surely he was old enough to vote?? :-\
I am very grateful to you, so they are listed under Wimmera Ultima, that is great. thank you so much. Sorry to be pushy, but were there any Smiths mentioned? I know ther were three different families of Smiths living in Waitchie by then, was voting compulsary do you know?
I am very happy, thank you for your perserverence with this, I am grateful to you :D ;D :)
Very kind regards
Lones :)
-
I seem to be on a roll (no pun intended) now.
The only Dunstans in Swan Hill subdistrict in 1909 and 1914 are those already mentioned at Fish Point. Mr Durose of Waitchie appears in Swan Hill in both of those rolls. There is no subdistrict for Ultima.
Ultima becomes its own subdistrict for 1919. Margaret and William I mentioned above.
So now we have
1924 Wimmera, Ultima
Dunstan, Margaret, Waitchie South, home duties, F
Dunstan, Mary Jane, Waitchie South, home duties, F
Dunstan, Richard James, Koovganel, Ultima, farmer, M (the only other Dunstan in this subdistrict)
Dunstan, William Henry, Waitchie South, Farmer, M
1931 Wimmera, Ultima
Dunstan, Danius, Waitchie, farmer, M
Dunstan, Margaret, Waitchie South, home duties, F
1936 Wimmera, Ultima
Dunstan, Danius, Waitchie, farmer, M
Dunstan, Margaret, Waitchie South, home duties, F
In 1931 and 1936 Danius and Margaret are the only Dunstans in Ultima subdistrict.
Debbie
PS Just saw your other post. I'll have a look for Smiths now. Thought I'd look for the more distinct name first. As for voting age, it was 21.
-
Back again,
Just had a quick look at 1936 (as I still had it open) and there were a few Smiths in Waitchie mentioned.
If you'd like to PM me your email address I can send you the actual images and you can work through them all yourself. (Would probably do that tomorrow afternoon as its nearly hometime now).
Debbie
-
Hi Debbie
Thank you so much, I'm back from Melbourne now (poorer, but lots of chrissy shopping done ;D) and will PM you with my details. Thank you so much for your help
Dee, sorry I didn't reply to you, I only just saw your message as I was reading through the post. I hope you didn't think I was ignoring you, I would never do that intenetionally. I shall PM you too.
Thank you both
Lones :)

I am pretty sure voting age was 21.
Both of my Grandparents were born in 1915 yet they don't appear on the 1936 Roll, and it is an unusual name too so if they are on there I couldn't possibly miss them.
Something else worth noting if you are having trouble finding someone is that women were not given the vote until 1905/1906?, Non British subjects until the 1940's and Aborigines until 1949.
I am having a ball with these electoral rolls though, I have found a wealth of info in regards to where people lived at a certain time and their jobs, I have found entries for almost everyone who was alive and of the right age between 1905-1936 :)

Belinda, thank you, Debbie has found my Grandmother and her brother and parents on the 1924 register, so they were there. I am very pleased with that. Don't you just love this site? Everyone is so helpful. It's brilliant
Thank you to everyone who has helped me on this, I am really pleased with the results.

Sorry to bother you all again, another quick query. My Grandmother is listed on the 1924 role as Mary Jane Dunstan, but she married on the 25 Oct 1922 to Sydney John Smith. Why would she be listed under her maiden name, does anyone know? They were not seperated or divorced as they were still married when she passed away.
Thank you

Is anyone else having trouble accessing the Electoral Rolls?
I am getting a padlock all of a sudden.....but another Rootschatter with the same UK subscription can access them no worries.
It's frustrating......

I'm not having any problems Dee ... it says this is what kind of membership I have: ''U.K. Heritage Collection Membership"

Thanks Belle!
I have tried and tried and tried......whenever I use the search engine, access is denied to the records.
Now I have just discovered, that if I then return to the home page, my last search becomes a link on there, and I can then link to that particular record!
It is slow and cumberosme.....and wierd! :o ::) :-\

Hi Dee
I'm having the same trouble too - notsure when it started, I checked there probably a week or two ago - and I could get in. I've tried via .uk and .au
I have a weirdly named sub - being a few years old
Annual UK & Ireland Records Collection but when I check the only thing it will let me update to is World - and it tells me I need world to access the Oz electoral rolls!!
Very strange
I guess I will send an email and get a standard rubbish reply
Trish

Exactly the same as me, Trish! Same sub from a couple of years ago.....same problem.....
Grrrrr..... >:( >:(
.....dee
-
Hi
Dee I am wondering if the way one searches has anything to do with the problem.
I go to the Rolls via the Home Search page by
Clicking onto Australian Convicts Settlers and more....
and then click onto Electoral Rolls.
Probably not helpful if you have a different type of sub.
Cheers
Cando

Reply .... you mean you've actually had replies from them? :o
I have sent 3 different emails to Ancestry for tech support in the past few weeks and have not had a reply for ONE >:(
- Belinda.
-
I've given up for today.....will have another try tomorrow. I too get there via the home page.....but for each person I look up I have to first get the update subscription page....then go back to the Home Page.....then I can do the solitary lookup!
It's just so infuriating. >:( >:(

I'm also having problems, Ancestry does not recognise my password. >:(

There used to be a phone number where you could call in Australia but I can no longer find it anywhere - I am really annoyed if they no longer have Australia as part of the UK set - I will stop subscribing if this is the case - I surely don't need US records
And Dee has my sub correct - when I joined that was the UK option & there was no .au
Trish
-
Annual UK & Ireland Records Collection
for me too
-
Or they should at least tell us how we can swap to the
U.K. Heritage Collection Membership if that allows us to search Aussie records......
......dee
-
I wonder if this is another case of Ancestry changing access to databases and you now have to have a World Membership to gain access. If their logic (mind you logic and Ancestry is an oxymoron) is that a UK membership shouldn't have access to Australian databases then fair enough but its annoying to have access and then for changes to be made with no explanation. Hopefully though its just a hiccup at their end and normal service is eventually resumed.

Just to give further clarification:
*I have U.K. Heritage Collection Membership
*I only joined Ancestry in September and there was only the 2 paid membership choices, that one which was approx $120? I think and then World Heritage which was approx $400.
* I joined through ancestry.com.au
* I always go into the site through the .com.au branch
* I can access all Australian & UK records
* I am currently not having any problems accessing Australian or UK records

There have been some changes to the web site regarding the UK and AU memberships. Your UK membership no longer gives you full access to the AU records. You still have access to these records listed below?
AusConvictOthers
Australian Convict Transportation Registers – Other Fleets & Ships, 1791-1868
AusConvictThird
Australian Convict Transportation Registers – Third Fleet, 1791
AusConvictSecond
Australian Convict Transportation Registers – Second Fleet, 1789-1790
To have further access to the AU database you will need to upgrade to the World Deluxe or purchase pay per view vouchers.
If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

And this was my reply
As I have just paid for 12 months sub I find this COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE - Most Australians have NO interest in USA Data - We all came from UK origins. I specifically paid because I had access to UK and Australian data. I wish to cancel my sub and get a refund OR I want you to restore my sub to what it was when I paid. Please advise who I should contact about this issue.
very unhappy Trish >:( >:( >:(

Hi Trish,
Iam appalled by what Ancestry has done without any notification at all to its users.
It doesnt appear to have affected the Australian sub side.....yet...
I still seem to have access to all the records for Uk and OZ.

Hi mariac
I have always been quite a supporter of ancestry - but no more - I will not subscribe again unless they change this to as it was. Typical business - more money for the bosses!
The older I get the more of a socialist I become - I hate free enterprise - nationalise everything is my motto - at least the Scots have the sense to sell their own data rather than give 3rd parties the rights to it.
Trish
-
Have just seen this thread - this situation is appalling...
I had a brief free trial of ancestry.com.au before Christmas and could access both UK and Australian records freely. You were in with a chance of winning two free tickets to the film "Elizabeth: the Golden Age" if you took this free trial. After I cancelled, they emailed me to say I was one of the winners and to please give them my snail mail address so they could send the tickets. I did this, but no tickets have arrived. The cynic in me says that because I cancelled, they are not sending them, in contravention of their publicity!
I foresaw this sort of situation developing when Ancestry was bought by that private equity company. Customer service will go down and costs will go up. Findmypast is looking good!
Trish, do let us know if you finally get any joy out of Ancestry!
MarieC
-
Hi MarieC
My latest reply is that I can cancel the UK sub & if I join in Oz I should get what I want. I have asked how much of a refund I will get, before I do this. It will be a reasonable solution, if the Oz subscription gives me Oz and UK data, except for the fact that our $ is worth more than when I paid - so my refund may be a little light in Australian Dollars.
I agree it probably relates to the new ownership
Trish

Hi there,
I have the Aussie sub and can get all the UK records + all the Aussie ones.
It is still called the UK Heritage package on the aussie site and is $150/yr.
I joined about 6months ago and so far have no complaints.
Rootschatters have been saved from my endless requests for look-ups for which I was most grateful. Sometimes though I cant find the answers and always turn to RC. Thanks everyone for all your help.

Yes indeed, my brief trial of ancestry.com.au did let me access both Australian and UK records!
It's still pretty disgusting what they have done to Trish and others. It would have been much more customer friendly to let the subs run their course and advise subscribers of the changes if they resubscribed - perhaps suggest they subscribed to the Aussie one.
Just a thought. Wonder if people in the UK who want to research Aussie relatives will be able to join ancestry.com.au?? ??? ???

UK folk can no doubt join thru Oz and may not get charged GST - When I joined through UK I didn't have to pay VAT - which turned out to be not a saving - as I can't access the data I want!!
