I'm looking for the birth/baptism of HENRY PENNINGTON about 1871.
The information I have for him is scant;
He married Portsmouth 4/3/1909. His age was given as 37. He was a gunner RGA at Fort Rowner, Brockhurst, Hants. Father, John Pennington (deceased)
Having turned all censuses upside down from 1871 through to 1901, I simply cannot find him. There are 9 Henry Pennington's on the 1881 census. I've narrowed it down to two likely one's & this is the Lancashire one. He's at Newton in Makerfield with a John & Margaret Percival. There is also a 12 year old John Taylor who later turns out in the 1891 to be a nephew of Margaret's but is recorded as a boarder as is Henry Pennington age 9. They are all born Newton le Willows.
It seems that Newton le Willows is not on the IGI so hoping a kind Rootschatter might be able to help :)

Hi Jane,
Sorry can`t help with the baptism, but I think it will be the Lancashire one - have you seen the British Army WW1 Pension Records on Ancestry? There is one from Newton le Willows and he was at Fort Rowner in 1909.

Mo

For goodness sake. I am trying to post a minimal entry on where to find Newton le Willows records and it won't let me.
Newton le Willows records are included with St Helens.
That will have to do.

Hi Jane
Alfred Street, Newton-le-Willows (Newton-in-Makerfield) is approximately 200 yards from St Peters Church, Newton-le-Willows (Newton-in-Makerfield). If your relative was baptised at this church you can find the baptism records deposited at:
Manchester Central Library Archives and Local Studies department.
The film number you would need to access is MFPR 542.
Unfortunately you cannot see these records on-line. You would have to go in person to the library or get someone else to look for you. Hope this helps.

Thank you all for your responses :) Lancashire is new territory for me so Ericx's little geography lesson was much appreciated.
Sorry about your posting frustration, Dancing Master, but it's the thought that counts ;)
Mo, I think you've found him & I've sent you a PM :-*

It is annoying when if you try to extract 2 lines from a site, and put which site you are unable to post it. But it allows information and extracts from paid sites ie. Ancestry to be posted no trouble.

Newton le Willows, Merseyside became part of St Helens Borough in 1974
Newton In Makerfield became Newton le Willows in 1939 with it's own Urban District Council
Newton was a sub-district of Warrington before then
St Peter, Newton was a "chapel of ease" for the "mother church" of St Oswald, Winwick
Newton's Parish Church is actually Emmanuel, Wargrave
