Title: Alice Wedgwood
Post by: Skippy1973 on Wednesday 28 November 07 19:33 GMT (UK)
Hi

I'm looking for any information on an Alice Wedgwood, all I know is she used the 24 Watergate Street, Chester in and around 1916, also in 1916 she went to London and had a baby girl called Phyllis. I have no idea what year or where Alice was born.

Any help would be appreciated

Many thanks

Chris

Birth registered as WEDGWOOD:

Local Record Office: www.cheshirebmd.org.uk: 1895 Chester Castle ref CAS/78/73
General Record Office: freebmd.org.uk: Mar 1895 Chester 8a 414

Looks like a second marriage for William judging by the age gap between the children...

In 1891, RG12 2861/34 Page 61, Wec? Building, Christleton Road, Chester:

William WEDGWOOD, Head, Mar, 44, Furniture Broker born Chester
Alice WEDGWOOD, Wife, Mar, 36 born Chester
Sarah A WEDGWOOD, Dau, S, 18, Home from Domestic Service born Salop Whitchurch
Elizabeth WEDGWOOD, Dau, S, 16, Home from Domestic Service born Salop Whitchurch
William WEDGWOOD, Son, 12, Asst to Father born Chester
James WEDGWOOD, Son, 4, Scholar born Chester
Charles WEDGWOOD, Son, 2 born Chester
Mary WEDGWOOD, Dau, 1 born Chester

At least that clears up the 1901 occupation, the missing word is Furniture!

No problem Barbara, all became clearer with the 1891!  :) although I think you may be right with Furnisher - maybe an early interior decorator!

Marriage from www.cheshirebmd.org.uk:

Hi Chris,

Sorry to take a while with posting the other census records - 1871, RG10 2797/8 Page 14, Sherry Mill Hill, Whitchurch, Shropshire:

William WEDGWOOD, Lodger, Wid, 24, French Polisher born Chester Cheshire

I've just noticed he's down as a widower so I'll see if I can find another marriage.  He's a lodger with a GROCOTT family.

Found the baptisms of the 2 eldest children (probably from a 1st marriage) at Wybunbury:

Ann WEDGEWOOD bap 24 Feb 1828 Father John WEDGEWOOD, shoemaker, mother Fanny
Samuel WEDGWOOD bap 4 Nov 1830 Father John WEDGWOOD, cordwainer, mother Fanny

I can't see the younger children who were baptised at Wybunbury, but perhaps the middle name Wesley indicates that they became Methodists?

www.cheshirebmd.org.uk has the marriage of John WEDGWOOD to Sarah STAFFORD, 1837 Wybunbury St Chad although I can't see it on the Wybunbury parish register transcription at http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/ - there are a couple of later marriages on here at Chester for William WEDGWOOD's siblings.

And a possible first marriage for John although a little earlier than expected:

John WEDGEWOOD m Fanny VICKERS 1 Nov 1820 Bunbury St Boniface

In one census John gives his birthplace as Spurstow which is in the parish of Bunbury.

All for now, hope this helps,

Dear All

Just discovered this thread. I'm on the same track and just now entering this new information on to my Ancestry tree. Alice Wedgewood nee Allen (bapt. Christleton 1855) is the daughter of James Allen (b. 1830, Oxon) my great grandfather.

As far as I can make out William Wedgewood was married three times (Elizabeth McCloud, Ann ?, and Alice Allen).

Would love to hear from any relatives.

Best wishes

John
