Title: William Henry Brown of Lambeth
Post by: DiggingforBrown on Thursday 29 November 07 13:38 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am a new addition to the addiction known as geneology. I have hit a snag and I am unsure of how to proceed.... My great-grandfather was a William Henry Brown, living in Lambeth in and around 1890 but I am unable to find him on any census records...... How can I proceed???????

Any help/tips would be gratefully received

Jill

Hello Jill and welcome to Rootschat.  :)

Can you tell us all you know about William Henry (eg birth year, birth place, whether married) and we will have a look st the censuses too.  He may be mistranscribed or  he might have switched his names round - many people did!

Hi Barbara

Wow, didnt expect anyone to have read it this quickly...

I dont have a birth, marriage or death year...  We think he married Margaret Sanders and was def living in Lambeth in 1914 because my grandfather Joseph J Brown was registered that year (birth Certificate ordered and should arrive anyday), albeit that he was born in 1890..

Members of the family think that his occupation was as a Brass Fitter......

I am afraid that is all I know at the moment... I have searched the marriage lists and census records but I am unable to find anything conclusive.

I really appreciate any help you can offer.

Jill

Hello Jill

This all sounds a bit odd  ;D  I can't quite understand why the registration would be so late - Joseph would be 24.

So, would you expect Joseph J to be with William in the censuses in 1891 and 1901?

Hi Barbara

No, I am assuming that they were just very late in their registration.... unless I have the wrong Joseph J Brown... Hopefully I will know more when the birth certificate arrives...

The other really strange thing is that the birth records for Joseph J Brown, registered in 1914 have the mothers maiden name as Frankland... Which is his future wifes maiden name ....

Will let you know more as and when the birth certificate arrives..

Bye for now

I will be very interested to hear what the birth certificate says Jill.

Do you have the marriage certificate for Joseph and his wife (Ruth Frankland I think).  This should give an occupation for Joseph's father.

I found this birth registration which is presumably the first child of Joseph and Ruth.

Think Barbara has found the birth cert looks like its Josephs son not his own birth cert that you are sending for.
A possible in 1901 for Joseph with his Father William

in the BMD index only after Q4 1911 mmn. were included so any born after the 1901 census and to September 1911 are more difficult to find

Hi, My is Gavin Frankland. The Brown's from Lambeth was part of my dads relations. We was all from Lambeth until the 60's.
Ruth Frankland was my grandads sister.
Vivian Brown was one of the sons who was killed at Arnhem.
I have researched quite a bit but I have no photo of him.
Thanks
