-
Yes, that looks right, CatOne :)
jane
-
Line 3 En Socile U.K ? Maybe a social trip home??

I think it's "E F"
meles

And definitely "En route"

I think you're all right after looking at it again re En route & as for line 3, it only took a day to get there from India if the dates are correct.
Debbie :)
-
Oh, just noticed... India on line 2 was a day from line 1 as well :D
-
Debbie I think your reading it wrong, that's when his tour of duty started. He was in the country on line 1 (that we can't read) from 18/6/1917 - 11/5/1918. Technically his next tour of duty started the next day, 12.5.1918 in India. They don't take into consideration how long it takes to get there it's included in the tour of duty.
I think that's EF as well. It's not an 'I' as that's different in the word, 'India'.

EF - Eastern Front?? :-\

Whoops...sorry Jane. I'll go & crawl in a hole now & die of embarrassment :-[ :-[
I hope you get some good answers from some sensible people soon :D

;D It took me a while sitting and studying wretched military forms and their odd jargon to make sense of everything, so no embarrassment :)
In another part of the record there are references to MEF, something Expeditionary Forces ?
jane
-
Line 3 looks like Mesop ( = Mesopotamia)
-
It's certainly a puzzler, Jane!
Line 1 is, I think an "N", then there is a loop from "India", then "es"
The Third line is similar, but an "M" and then "oe" then "sop"
But what that means, however.... :-\

Line 1 could well be Mes E.F. for Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force.

Think you might be right, Shaun, Mesopotamia,
jane
-
Mesopotamia looks good - think there was an Expeditionary Force too.
Hopefully his regiment is known - try asking on 'Armed Forces' for its whereabouts during those dates .....
or google ...... see Section 6 - http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/ww1_victory_medal_award.htm
-
He was a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA)

Thanks guys, I think we've cracked it. Thanks for those links!

On another page of the record it says, 'MEF, embarked Bombay 14/1/1919, disembarked, Basrah, 20/1/1919'. Basra being in modern Iraq, so it all makes sense. Thanks so much :)

There's always someone here who knows the answer! ;D

You're right meles. Many heads are better than one ;D

Hi Could be "Meerut" which was a garrison up to partition 1947
