Title: Where is Lowhouse?
Post by: Doggy on Monday 03 December 07 13:18 GMT (UK)
Hi

My direct ancestor John BOWKER has his place of birth as Lowhouse, Lancs (abt 1797) in the 1851 census.  By this time he was living in Haworth over the border in Yorkshire.

I can't for the life of me find such a place.  Any ideas anyone?
In 1861 he states born in Colne so I presume it's in that area.

Any help most appreciated.

Cheers

Doggy

Hi Sue

I don't think so as the family seem to be all from around the Lancs/Yorks border between Colne and Bradford/Keighley.

Cheers for the suggestion however.

Hi,

There was  Law and Law House addresses on the 1851 census for Colne.  HO107/2254 folio 590 pages pages 20 and 21.  Before these houses was Higher and Lower Saltersyke.

Mo

Hi

It's the 1851 census which is giving me the problem, perhaps someone might want to view it to see if I/ancestry have read it properly.
HO 107/2287 812/ 16

It's  Low House, Lancashire

Mo already said there's a Law House in Colne, and in 1861 he says Colne

Looks ok to me  :)

I have looked through the 1841 census for Colne, found a few houses under Law House, and a couple of pages before that is this family, so there were Bowkers in the area in 1841, perhaps a brother that you can link:

1841 Castle, Colne, Lancs
BOWKER
Edward 45  Weaver   Y
Hannah 40                 No
Mary 14                      Y
Thomas 11                 Y

Hope this helps,
Barbara  :)

Hi Barbara

I've found Law House on the Ordnance Survey site which seems to show that it is near somewhere called Mereclough which seems to be nearer to Burnley than Colne.

I must admit that I haven't managed to get as far back as any siblings to John yet, but hopefully you've found me a connection?

Hi,

Castle is definitely the correct area.  Try Castle Road on a modern map.  The postcode is BB8 7AE if its any help.  It is just NW of Laneshawbridge and just below Colne Golf course.  I can only find Law Hill which is marked just to the right of the end of Castle Road, but it does show Law House marked on the old 1848 maps.

If you can`t find it let me know.

Mo

Now to find Stubbing and Scartop?  Yorkshire I think so I might make a new posting there if I can't find them.

Thanks again.  The jigsaw is staring to fit at last as I can see a trail followed looking at the points on the map.
