I have a number of Rance's in the Rickmansworth area.

Rebecca Rance, christened 19/06/1831 daughter of Solomon Rance & Eliza Abbott.

Married first to Henry Sears in 1854 and in 1880 to John Sills.

Any connection?

My G-G-Grandmother was Jane RANCE, born in 1813 in Stevenage to William RANCE and Elizabeth PIGGOT.  She married Benjamin ANSELL on 30th April in Stevenage. On some records the name is spelt RUNCE.  Witnesses to the wedding were William and Sarah ANSELL.

I have no other information on the RANCE family as I have been researching the ANSELLs and this is difficult from Lancashire where the name became HANSELL.

Good luck

My apologies for butting in here - Pauline I have the Piggot family as well in Herts. Unfortunately mine are back in the 1400-1600's but they must be connected somewhere along the line.

Hi all,

Just to put my 2 penny's worth into the conversation:

I have RANCE featured in my tree in several places BUT all in the Berkshire area married into the HEADACH/HERRIDGE line.

Now I know that there is also a strong HEADACH/HERRIDGE line in Rickmansworth I believe that appeared all of a sudden in the late 1700's from Berkshire (still has to be proved but highly likely). Could be that the RANCE's did the same!

Just a thought!  :)

Hi Chelle 71,

Only just joined, but noticed your posting. I have one Rance, Thomas b. 1839 Tring, who married an ancestor of mine, Martha Fincher, also of Tring. Thomas was a joiner, and they later moved to Stevenage.
Their children were:
George (1864 I think) Clara (1870) Ellen (1872) Elizabeth (1873) Annie Ada (1878) Kate (1879) Thomas (1880) and Fred'K (1883).
Do any of these ring a bell?
There were a lot of Rance's in Tring, some of whom were attached to the Akeman Street Baptist Church. Unfortunately I do not have all the details on this computer, I am at work!!
If this is the right family I would love to get some more details.

Regards
Penny4em

I have something from the Hertfordshire Sessions Records that might be of interest, possibly the previous generation of the Rance family from Stevenage:

MICHAELMAS SESSION, 1776, QUARTER SESSIONS MINUTE BOOK.
Thomas Rance, William Rance, and John Peach, all of
Stevenage, labourers, for assaulting John Howard. [Not
guilty.]

Hope this helps

Hi Chelle

I don't have any copies of the original sessions documents, this is just taken from a published transcript of the sessions records so it's just normal text on the page, which I have copied verbatim in the previous post.

The originals are probably in the Hertfordshire Archives. They may do digital copies of the orginals for a fee, I don't know, you'd have to check with them.

Hello Chelle71

I thought I'd just chuck in the very small amout I know about my Rance line as my grandad never talked about his side of the family before he died so here it is.

Charles Rance married Pamela Rance (once an Eames)
They had 3 children Gary Rance, Nigel Rance (decided no children) and Deborah Rance (no children).
Gary Rance married Katrina Rance (once an hansen)
They had 4 children Lianne Rance (soon to be a Stanley), Kristine Rance (now a Kentfield), Luke Rance (Me) and Stewart Rance.
Lianne Rance has had 1 child named Charlie Stanley (named after our grandfather)
Kristine Kentfield married to Daniel Kentfield has 2 children Rosie Kentfield and Alfie Kentfield.

I'd love to see what you have done so far on the Rance Tree.

The Bledlow, Bucks Rance/Raunce family included one who had to host Queen Elizabeth I on one of her "progresses" and also another who was almost a famous merchant adventurer/explorer. A bit more mundane but John Raunce of Wycombe was Escheator for Bucks in 1559.
