Hi to all,
I'm searching for the marriage of John Garty and Frances Hethersey in Madras, India circa 1830.
John is listed as a Tailor at Fort St. George in 1830 and on the Families in British India as arriving as a passenger in 1821.
I can find NO reference to Frances Hethersey at all only the birth certificates for their sons William Garty (1834 in Sydney) and Hebar Garty born October 1841 in Parramatta, NSW, Australia.
One member of GenesReunited states that Hethersey had a spelling of HATHERSAY, HITHERSEY etc.
They had 2 other children Maria Eliza (circa 1831) and Frederick (circa 1833) possibly in the UK no details available.
Also there is an unknown Harriet Hannah Garty Christened 18 Mar 1832 St. Clements, Ipswich, Suffolk UK. There seems to be a connection however no definite proof.
Any help at all - PLEASE -to find info on my G G Grandparents.
Maureen

search.fibis.org - there's listed, departing on the Barretto Junior in 1831, Madras to London, J Garty, Mrs Garty, + one infant. (maybe Maria Eliza?)
-
Maureen- you might want to change the year from 1930 to 1830 in the title for a better change of getting help on this one.

Hi to aghadowey,
Thanks for pointing out the 1930 error.
***********************
and hi to jorose,
I had done a search on fibis and all I came up with was his Bond on arrival as a passenger in 1821. I presume that this Bond allowed him to work in Fort St. George at his trade as a Tailor.
However your info re leaving India makes sense as Maria was born in 1831 and the next child was apparently born in the UK
In my fibis search I found that John's "Sureties" for his Bond were:
Edward Dumsday, Shephards Market, May Fair, Tailor.
Samuel Dodson, Peters Street, Soho, Tailor.
CAN ANYONE POINT ME TO A WEB SITE FOR TAILORS IN THE 1800'S?

Hold the phone! ;)
www.familysearch.org
Go to Search
Choose to search from All Resources at the left of the page
Put John Garty's name in the name bit and put Frances only in the spouse bit (no surname)
Choose to search for a marriage
Hit Search
Bingo with details you should try to get your hands on. Note: Person is not in the phone book for NSW - checked. Better to go to a Latter Day Saint Family History centre near you to obtain.
It's all going to take you places you never thought of ;)

Hi to Infobunny and others
Thanks for the information re Maria Elizabeth Garty, her birth and the passage of the Gartys from Madras to London.
Have just heard via Britishgenealogy.com that John Garty's wife was Frances Ethersey not Hethersey, and her family were landed gentry with a baronetcy in the family. There is apparently a portrait of John Garty in existence in New South Wales, held by a Peter Courtis - another Garty descendant.
So it looks as though, at last, I'm getting some details of this branch of the family.
Regards
Maureen

There appears to have been a Richard Ethersey in the Indian Navy. Possibly a relative? He died in 1857, in rather unfortunate circumstances - during the Anglo-Persian war, General Stalker committed suicide, and then three days later, presumably influenced by this turn of events, Commadore Richard Ethersey did also. The Times quotes parts of Ethersey's journals showing how he was concerned with the upcoming attack on Mohammerah, in which he was to command the navy.
A week before his death: "I feel more my unfitness to command. I am broken down, my head gone, and the terrible responsibility!"

Hi Jorose and Infobunny,
Thanks Jorose,
it looks like I will spend a lot of time on the internet with these Ethersey people - unfortunatley, we only have "Dial-Up' speed and most times the best is around 40K bits/sec so it takes ages to search.
Infobunny, I obtained the Marriage Cert. for Maria and there was NO details about parents??? This was on the certificate
V18471128 73B/1847 WILLIAMS JOHN GARTY MARIA E
I will now order the other certificate to see if it contains any details of parents.
