Title: Looking for Isabella
Post by: ladybird on Saturday 15 December 07 21:16 GMT (UK)
Hi folks, hoping someone can point me in the right direction please.
On the IGI there is an entry of birth for
ISABELLA TOWNSLEY - 15 DEC 1862 High Church, Glasgow, Lanark,
Parents
JOHN TOWNSLEY  and CATHERINE STEWART.

For the life of me I can't find this birth on scotlandspeople. I have all her other siblings..some under the name TOWNSEND.

It's possible she may have died too as I also can't find her on the 1871 census.  The only other members of her family surviving at that time were her father John and sister Janet Nelson Townsley...can't find them either.
Can anyone help please, Sylvia  :)

Hi Sylvia

Don't forget that those close to the end of year births while recorded by birth or christening date on the IGI...are indexed by registration date on SP!!  Not making it into the book until mid January 1863 bumps her into the next year...

1863 TOWNSLEY ISABELLA F HIGH CHURCH GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/02 0103

Best wishes
Jean

Oh good grief, Jean, I've been in this caper long enough now, how could I forget one of the basic rules of registration  :-[
Thank you for that  :)

Ahh now there's an interesting turn of events on the cert...parents married 1856---England (?) I thought Isabella may have been illegitimate as I have her parents marriage cert ..after Banns 6th Nov 1863. It must have been one of the Traveller (agreement) type marriages they  entered into in England
Thanks again, there's always a bit more to add isn't there
Sylvia

Hi Sylvia

Glad to lend a hand.....and maybe someone who never knew about the registration date indexing on SP is now saying to themselves...Blimey...let's go back and look again!  So thanks for the teaching moment  :)

As for your English marriage details.....hmmmm.....a wee bit vague on the date of the nuptials.  Most anything is possible...and like you say....there's always a wee bit more to add  :)

Best wishes and happy holidays!
Jean

Hi Ladybird, my name is Michael Hughes and I live in Glasgow, Scotland. I am also a descendant of John townsley, he is my great, great grandfather.  My great grandmother was actually his second wife, named Ann mckenna. I have been searching for his three surviving children, Alexander - Who was sent to sea after the death of John. As well as Isabella and Janet. I have searched through every death certificate for every Isabella Townsley who died in Scotland up to 1950 and found no trace. And it seems like Janet is in a girls school in 1881 but also as you know disappears. I was wondering if in your searches you managed to uncover any further information on the children. As strange as it may sound I’ve become quite fond of them.  Also, if you don’t mind me asking, how are you related to the Townsley.
Kind regards
Michael Hughes

There is an Isabella Townsley marriage in 1895 Ruthven to John Whyte/McKenzie (same person)

Also an Isabella Townsend marriage in 1886 to Alexander McLeod in Milton

Have both marriages aready been discounted?

I know that this refers to the OP from 2007 but, the child named Isabella  was born  15 Dec 1862.
The birth would probably not be registered until 1863.

Hi thanks, everyone. CaroleW I have followed up on your possible leads and sadly the second marriage isn't her but I'll follow up on the first also.
I'm sure she is out there somewhere, it's just a matter of time, hopefully.
Again, thanks for taking the time to help :)

Do you know when and where John was born and his occupation?

There is a john Townsley living with a friend in 1871 census, he was born in Ayrshire1841 ans he was a tinsmith.

Friend's name was John McCall

There are also three Townsley children
Alexander born c1860
Bella born c1863
Janet born c1869

I can't see a birth for Alexander Townsley on SP
There is a birth for an Alexander Stewart....mother Catherine Stewart
6 March 1861   Glasgow High Church
