Post by: maki on Friday 28 December 07 15:36 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help? I am trying to find JAMES MATTHEWS born ab 1853 father BENJAMIN MATTHEWS. On the 14 December 1889 he married GWENLLIAN JOHN nee WILLIAMS (born 1858) in LLANTRISAINT,PONTYPRIDD,GLAMORGAN,they had three children WILLIAM COLEMAN MATTHEWS, MARY JANE  MATTHEWS & OAKLEY GEORGE MATTHEWS my great grandfather. Have been unable to find them in 1891 census.

Thanks maki

Hi Maki,

I looked earlier to no avail and have just looked for a Benjamin who could be James' father but can't one either!

I saw your Oakley as a visitor in 1901 but that is all I seem to be able to find of this family. Perhaps also a death for Gwenllian 1897 which would perhaps tie in with Oakley's birth.

best wishes
heywood

Postscript
Free BMD has him as John Matthews and she as Gwenllian John - where does 'nee Williams' come in to it please?

I then looked for Gwenllian and have followed one - she seems to be married to Evan Kingdom in 1891- so wrong one!

Do you have James on any census? Or some idea of his place of birth? Or do you know when the older children were born?
I can see Gwenllian in 1871 & 1881, but can't spot her in 1891 so far. There's a possible for James in 1901 as a widower, giving his age as 52 and place of birth as Newport, Wales.
Any more clues?

I have found a John Gunter Matthews b 1852 Cardiff - father Benjamin, living Llandadd Glamorgan in 1861 RG9; Piece: 4039; Folio: 30; Page: 21

John is still with the family in 1881 and is a solicitor - does this ring any bells?

1881 RG11; Piece: 5298; Folio: 71; Page: 61 has Mrs Gwenllian John with husband Oliver and children Ann and Mathew. The marriage in 1875 was Oliver John and Gwenllian Williams- getting there ...

Just to clarify the birth place for Elizabeth Ann and Thomas P is Tondu pronounced Tondee (It's my husband's childhood home and where I first worked for the NCB) Tondu is very close to Aberkenfig at the bottom of the Llynfi valley where the main town is Measteg

yes I saw a William C Williams but now Ancestry has gone down!

When you say you can't find them in 1891 - do you have ancestry access to search for these names?
