Hi James,

do you have a date of birth for Eleanor?

She was born in 1853.  I have a marriage certificate (1878) which supports this and also gives her father as John Barber, but of course no mother.  There is a birth record for Eleanor Barber registered in Langport in 1853 so all in all I'm satisfied that her name and dob are correct.  She and husband Walter had 5 children - Ada 1882, Louisa 1884, Beatrice 1887, Henry 1887 & Wilfred 1890. What I can't seem to find is Eleanor within a family unit on the 1861 or 1871 census records.  I will probably send for her birth cert eventually, but surely there should be some record of her "early" years.

PS she is occasionally referred to as "Ellen", nor Eleanor in the 1881+ census records.

James,

Interestingly, this couple seem to live next door to your Benjamin Cabble (see this thread: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,275780.0.html ) and in this case Caroline!  The enumerator has put Hampshire as the county of her birth, but spelt the parish in the Somerset fashion.

1871 census RG10 111 folio 100
62 Gloster Street St George Hanover Square Westminster
Ellen Barber 17 General Domestic Servant Barton Somerset

Barton St David is adjacent to Keinton Mandeville

The birthplace of Jane Barber in Keinton Mandeville on the 1871 census gives an indication of why the family can't be found on the 1861 census.

1871 census RG10 2394 folio 5
8 Church Street Keinton Mandeville
Sarah Barber Head Widow 43 Dressmaker Queen Camel Somerset
Sarah Ann Barber 19 Daughter Glover Keinton Somerset
Job Barber 12 Son Stone cutter Keinton Somerset
Mary Barber 10 Daughter Keinton Somerset (birth appears to be registered 1860 Langport)
Jane Barber 8 Daughter Cork Ireland
Henry Barber 4 Son Keinton Somerset
Ann Brooks 19 Visitor Queen Camel Somerset

Wow - I'm impressed - you've certainly seem to have solved the mystery that has illuded me for so long that Eleanor was not on any census record in 1861 as the family were actually living/on holiday in Cork, Ireland and in then 1871 she was in service working in London.  I can finally add Eleanor's siblings and parents onto my family tree.

Thanks so much everyone for your help.

I was wondering if you had any thing more on the parents of your illusive Barber relative? I am searching for info on a Susan/Susanna(h) Barber born around 1828 in Frome. With Frome being only 20 miles from Keinton, I was wondering if your John (father to Eleanor/Ellen) was a brother to my Susannah and if you had anything more to go on. I am having quite the time finding info on Susannah. I'd be interested in hearing if you've had any luck/success.

I'm having to 'guess' since you really don't supply information information to work from, that this maybe Sussanna Barber who married Richard Perrett in Tisbury registration district in 1860? 1861 census a Richard Perrett and Susana his wife are in Hindon. She is aged 29 and born Frome.

Working from that hypothesis this is a possible for a census entry for 1851 but the 1841 census shows another Susan Barber of the same age in Frome - no sister Hannah and father not an innkeeper so without further details on Susanna and her family it is very difficult to search.

1851 census HO107 1952 folio
Clifton Wood House Clifton, Gloucestershire
Susan Bairber  22 Frome, Somerset,  Servant  House maid

Thank-you, Valda. Yes, Susanna married Richard Perrett in Hindon, 1860. I am stuck on this one. The 1861 Census lists her PL. of Birth as Frome. We found one-- Susanna in Keinton Mandeville - 1851 Census; Fa:John- innkeeper, Sister: Hannah- dressmaker; Susanna - barmaid; We know from a document we received that she had a sister-but not her name. Add the one you mentioned; Plus one Susannah as visitor in  Shropshire;  Plus the Henry/Sophia family but we are not convinced that is the correct family. Richard became a maltster/innkeeper/storekeeper in later years, so I was hoping to get a bit more info prior to sending for a cert.

Susanna Barber in Keinton Mandeville (registration district Langport) in 1851 gives her birthplace as Butleigh in Somerset and her age as 19.
It makes her a possible candidate for this marriage as the only Susan(anna) Barber of marriageable age in Somerset on the 1851 census and more exactly the only one in Langport registration district

Marriages Mar 1852
Barber  Susan    Langport  5c 693
Humphries  Samuel     Langport  5c 693

The only two names of FreeBMD so other names missing from the index.

Susannah the wife of Richard gives her age as 32 and her birthplace as Frome on the 1861. Her age despite the changes in birthplace which become more general, but then on later censuses she isn't the one supplying the information, stays consistent.

Deaths Jun 1891
PERRETT  Susan  62  Devizes  5a 67

I can't see on the 1851 census your other Susanna Barber candidate in Shropshire, but you really need the details from the marriage certificate to confirm the details of your Susanna's father. At this point I can only see the one Susanna Barber born Frome circa 1828/9 details already given - baptism, 1841 and 1851 censuses, the daughter of Henry and Sophia.

Thank-you for your assistance, Valda. I have Susan[na]'s death cert. and the one you cited is the correct one. We didn't believe she belonged to the Henry/Sophia family, but since the other Susanna married another, I will take a chance and order the M. Cert. Thanks again.
