Hi Everybody,
We need your help for the RootsChat Reference Library project.
Ever noticed that some questions get asked again and again ?
The idea of this Lexicon is that we don't keep repeating the same information again and again,
but simply point to some good RootsChat topics on these subjects.
This is the lexicon:
Topic: RootsChat Topics: LEXICON of Genealogical Terms and Abbreviations
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,234766.0.html
If you see any useful, informational RootsChat topics,
defining words and terms found in the census, certificates or
parish registers, or elsewhere in your genealogical searches,
then please help expand this lexicon by adding the RootsChat topic link here.
But not external links, they don't belong here.
I'll delete them from here, when I've added them to the list.
Sometimes we have some suggestions but no relevant topic. I've entered the term with topic ??
If you can find a good explanatory topic, that would also help.
You're the users, so it will be great if you can point others to any other good topics.
Thanks,
Bob

Suggestions Page
Apart from any other words and phrase that occur to you,
here are some of the suggestions we've received for the dictionaries
If you notice any good explanations of these words and phrases
in your "travels" around RootsChat, please add a link to this topic.
I'll add any more here, and delete them as and when links are found
Thanks :)

Just a reminder:
I haven't been flagging up every new item, but ...
I am continually adding terms and abbreviations - with relevant RootsChat topics - to the
RootsChat Lexicon (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,234766.0.html)
Please check it out :)

Hi Bob
The lexicon is a fantastic idea and I have checked several terms to make sure they are included. My only comment is that the lexicon itself is still a bit messy. Can it not have its own area such as the surnames interest table? The lexicon seems to be placed among a long thread of messages and is not user friendly.
This is intended as constructive criticism as I am aiming towards a positive outcome.

Hi Jane,
"Funnily enough ...." I was thinking the same thing myself ;D
I'm just awaiting the outcome of a couple of other projects,
and then I want to start doing just that :) :)
Maybe expand it as well, with short descriptions, and a few external links as well as the RootsChat topic links for each term.

Hi Bob
Thanks for replying so quickly. I think I would have called it a glossary rather than a lexicon but technically you may be correct.
It is not easy to use at the moment and don't think people will bother. It needs a label right at the top of the site. A quick search. It will be easy to the techys surely.
Love to be able to help more.

Hi Bob,
Just writing to agree with you and Jane, FWIW!!!
The lexicon is a fantastic resource and many thanks to you for doing it. It just needs to be a bit more readily accessible. Don't want your excellent work to be obscured from Rootschatters who need to access it!! ;D

Hi Bob
you're doing a great job - keep up the good work, and you are right - there is often repetition on here because people do not know where to look. The Lexicon is a brilliant resource, and deserves to be up there prominently on the index page.
Presumably these topics would come up if search was used, but the 'search' button is a bit discreet. On a lot of sites when one enters, the search button is the first page one sees. Would it help if search came up first when new people come to the site, to help them get straight to the information they require.
regards
Helen

Hi Jane, MarieC and Helen,
I'm with you (and I think - certainly I hope - that Bob knows this) about what a fantastic resource the LEXICON is!
Which is why I try to do my minuscule bit to suggest additions and to recommend/refer to it.
But you are right that it is a bit hidden away.
Perhaps an upfront FAQ section on RootsChat wouldn't be a bad idea?
Oh Bob, it's so easy for people like me to make suggestions when it's people like you who have to do all the hard work ;D
Regards to all,
JAP

Hi Bob,
There's only one reference to BCDR Belfast and County Down Railway at the moment but there may well be more in due course. Although there's no mention of them at the moment there are two others ... NITB ... the Northern Ireland Transport Board and UTA ... Ulster Transport Authority

Hi JAP, Jane, MarieC and Helen, and everybody else,
I've now moved the Lexicon to this address: http://surname.rootschat.com/lexicon/index.php
I'm still working on it, and other improvements will follow.
Enjoy,
Bob

That is so helpful, Bob, thank you. I've put it in Favourites.

Excellent work Bob and thank you, it is proving very useful.
Will it become a link at the bottom of the page like the other roostchat websites?

Hi Bob
Re: Stamp Duty (1783-1794)
There's a useful thread on this subject here:

Might be worth linking to it in the library of frequency asked questions?

Hello Bob,
References to old handwriting in the Lexicon (unless I've missed something) seem only to be under 'Old English in Wills' which refers to the following thread:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,239704
May I suggest that cross-references also be indexed in the Lexicon under 'Handwriting' and 'Old Handwriting' and 'Palaeography' and 'Secretary Hand' and 'Scottish Handwriting'.
Thanks and regards,
JAP

I don't know if the word Pomology is a suitable candidate for your Lexicon.
I found it when researching a forebear who had been Head Gardener for the Duke of Hamilton in Edinburgh.
Pomology:-
The science of fruits and the art of fruit culture and anyone who follows that science is a Pomologist.
I find it a very appealing word !
Kind regards..........

Hello Bob,
A suggested addition to the Lexicon is:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,318060
It might be added to the existing index under:
IGI
Extracted/Submitted Records
or (preferably?)
as a new index entry such as:
IGI
'I', 'C', 'M' batches without source information
Another thread related to this is at:

Are you still adding abbreviations? If so then here's a couple of suggestions:
SNWM: Scottish National War Memorial
IWGC: Imperial War Graves Commission
