Title: Can anyone find Edward??
Post by: soulsister on Saturday 05 January 08 15:09 GMT (UK)

Ive been looking for EDWARD CARRICK born 1893 in South Shields on the 1901 census and cannot find any trace of him!!

I dont know anything about his parents, only got his name today from a marriage cert.

He marries AGNES BOND in 1916 in South Shields and his children are born in South Shields, so Im presuming he would be around the area in 1901!!

Any help on this one appreciated!!!

Does the marriage name Edward's father and occupation?

Hi Emma,

This could be his birth registration (found on FreeBMD)

Edward  Carrick  Dec 1893  S.Shields   10a   793

The marriage cert was for his sons marriage! Edward is listed as a General Labourer.

Sorry I thought the marriage certificate was for Edward Carrick and Agnes Bond.

Hi Emma

There are 140 Edwards born Shields 1893+/-2yrs at 1901 Census online.  None of the surnames come anywhere near CARRICK.

There are dozens of CARRICKS in several 1891 Census Indexes living in South Shields Registration District, but choosing any one of those would only be guessing.

The South Tyneside BDM's are online and the Edward registered in 1893 was at SS/Jarrow.A district.  There is a 53yr old Edward resident in Jarrow in 1891, resident in Middlesbrough in 1901 and no son Edward with him. This couple do appear to have finished having children well before the 1890's, but your Edward could easily be a son of an unmarried daughter.

It does look as though you will need to go the certificate way after all.

Hi Emma

This is interesting.

Daughter Margaret of the CARRICK Edward and Elizabeth in Jarrow 1891 (RG12/4165  Folio 23  Page 42) married James ALLISON in 1894.

At the 1901 Census Margaret ALLISON is resident in Jarrow with three children.
Edward aged 7, Barbara aged 3 and Elizabeth aged 10m - all birthplaces stated as Jarrow.

On the South Tyneside Registers Barbara Alice ALLISON's birth is recorded 1898, Elizabeth Carrick P ALLISON's birth is recorded 1900, but there is no record for Edward ALLISON in 1893/1894.

I've got to go, so I'll leave that thought with you.

Regards

Helen K

Emma,

You don't have Edward's birth certificate, baptism, marriage cert, or his appearance on a census... How do you know he was born 1893 , South Shields ? or have I missed something? Or have you used his age on death ?

I worked it out as follows!! Perhaps Im wrong, but it all looks right to me!

On my grandfather's marriage cert it says father Edward Carrick. I knew my grandfather's date of birth and looking at the bmd his mother's maiden name was Bond. I then looked for a marriage bewteen an Edward Carrick and a lady with surname Bond and found Edward marrying an Agnes. Now we have date of death as 5/5/ 1975 for Edward whcih would fit with the dec qtr 1893 birth given his age of 75. I know the family were from south shields and are in Jarrow in 1947 and the children were born there and Edward and Agnes married there so Ive gone with that birth!!

What do you think??

Emma,

If Edward died 5/5/1975 and was aged 75 yrs at death, then his birth year is near 1900 ?

A 1893 birth would have made him 82 on a 1975 death ??

Emma,

I think Helen's info about Margaret Allinson and family including a seven yr old Edward, in Jarrow area, is worth pursuing.

I notice (from FreeBMD site) that after Edward Carrick and Agnes Bond married in 1916, they had..

James E. June Qtr 1917
Agnes M.E Mar Qtr 1920 and
Hannah June Qtr 1922 (all reg. @ South Shields)

Edward's birth cert, will sort out who, if anyone, was registered as his father !

Just an update!

I received Edward and Agnes's marriage cert this morning and where Edward's father's details should there is a line! So chances are the Edward Helen found IS mine!

The only thing in the father's name and surname box apart form the line is what looks to be a letter J, then a space then either rt or st joined up!

No idea what that means! Also there is something written outside of all the boxes that looks like 'four jwk'! Again I've no idea!

The couple were living together at 148 High Street in Jarrow, Edward down as 23 years old and Agnes 18 yrs.

Still think I need the birth cert for Edward though!

Hello Emma,

I'd love to know if you found any further details on Edward Carrick.  I have come up against a dead end with him.  He was my great grandfather.

Best wishes,

Jenn Veza (nee Carrick)
