hi!
ive been trying to put a family tree together but have got stuck as far back as my great grandfather Nicholas Fortune.
all that i know about Nicholas is that he was born roughly around 1901 in Ballycanew, Wexford and was one of seven.
he ran away to scotland and married Annie Hughes. i have the tree sorted from everyone below them. i think that Nicholas has a brother called Paddy.. and maybe a sister called Mary?
if anyone could give me any help it would be much appreciated.
and if anyone knows Ballycanew at all we apparently owned the local pub, always a good start if you ask me haha!
any response will be greatly recieved

I remember back in the 1970's travelling from Dublin to Wexford we always stopped at Fortunes in Ballycanew. It was a grocery store on one side and a pub at the other side.
I haven't been down that way in a long while but I'm sure its still there today. Or if not, someone local to the area would be able to tell you.
Best wishes with your search,
Peter.

My husbands family are Fortunes on his mothers side. She is Ellen Fortune and her father was Patrick Fortune and (I think) his brothers owned the pub in Ballycanew which was sold out of the family about 10 years ago and is now known as The Ramble Inn.
My mother in law is still alive and living in Ballycanew if you want to know anything else.
I would be interetsed to know what you have found out about the Fortune family

I can take a photo of the Ramblers Inn in Ballycanew if you want. Am in Ballycanew on a weekly basis.

Hi, I only came across this site this morning while browsing "Ballycanew" I live in Ballycanew for the last eight years and have a little information about "Fortune's" Larry Fortune and his brother (I think his name is John) owned and ran Fortunes Bar in the main street.
In 2002 it was bought by the Masterson Family and re opened as the Ramble Inn. Larry still resides in Ballycanew and is well known throughout. His brother resides in UK. I know its a while since your original post but I hope this is a lead you could do with.

I remember Fortunes very well. I was born in Ballycanew and Mum, Dad my brother, sister and I lived in my grandfathers house & shop "H.Hill & Sons" down the bottom of the village. We sold out when I was 12 years old to Percival. I remember a Walter Fortune, his wife and family. Walter was a portly man, all family very friendly. I remember Paddy.

Hello there,
I am interested about the Ballycanew School Register. How far back does it go and is it available online?
Thanks

Not sure if this post is still active but my grandfather was Laurence Fortune of Ballyduff, Ballycanew. I remember hearing about the Fortune pub growing up. His brother ran the pub. Laurence was the oldest boy in the Fortune family, his father was Thomas Fortune and Mother was Ellen Rourke. After the war of 1922 he went to Scotland with his wife and had a family there. I got my DNA test done and I'm on FamilyTreeDNA and ancestry.ie I would love to connect with other Fortune descendants. :)
