FreeBMD has a marriage, altho they seem unsure if the Vol / Page is Romford in Hannah's case !

Marriages Jun 1872

Byford  Hannah    Mutford  Vol 4a Page 179
Byford  Hannah     Romford  Vol 4a Page 179   to Dorrington  William     same Romford Refns.

So it looks good overall.

The only Albert I can see in the Birth Indices is 1874 - 4Q -    Kensington  Vol 1a P248

whoops - he was an infant death    :(

Mostly female Dorrington births in Romford District in the few years after that marriage, and a William I think .....

I'll check the census ....

Looking at the 1881 census in the Romford area, some of the above births can be cross-referenced, but there is no sign of parents named William and Hannah   ???

Found a William (House Painter) and Hannah in West Ham - son Ernest, born 1876 Fulham ....

albert was my great grandfather. he went to australia in the late 1880s (as a teenager and without his family) and came back to england in 1908. he was a published writer of short stories and novels, and the information i have about him was found in a biography, i believe in the australian public records archives. i just can't seem to find anything else.

Hi both,

http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A080351b.htm

Quote
DORRINGTON, ALBERT (1874?-1953), author and journalist, was born probably on 27 September 1874 at Fulham, London, son of William Dorrington, policeman, and his wife Hannah, née Byford. He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham. When he was about 16 he 'drifted' to Australia where, after brief stays in Melbourne and Adelaide, he travelled through the German settlements in South Australia; in Queensland, the Torres Strait, and Palmerston (Darwin); and in outlying western New South Wales, supporting himself through canvassing and other jobs. Germans, Chinese, Kanakas, Afghans and Japanese, often unpleasantly perceived, populate much of his fiction. In 1899 Dorrington settled at Waitara, Sydney, where he lived with Leonora Anderson, who bore him several daughters. For seven years he replated silverware for a Pitt Street company

Great pic of him!  8)

The William (House Painter) and Hannah are the couple who married in Romford ... Hannah's PoB in 1881 is Sudbury, and she can be seen as Hannah Byford in 1871 Clerkenwell .... born Sudbury ...

Ah - Tati - great find, and I see he was born in FULHAM  - so that is the right couple, but why a House Painter not a Cop ?

 ???

The biography gives his dates
Birth - 27 September 1874, Fulham, London
Death - 9 April 1953, Ruislip, London

Strangely, in April-June quarter 1953 there's one death for an Albert Dorrington (Harrow 5f 323) but his age is 94 ???

Looking again at the handwritten 1881 page, the name is deffo Ernest and a comment 'Ricketts from Birth' .....

so most odd, but mum Hannha is firmly Hannah Byford from Sudbury.

I'd be tempted to invest in the Marriage Cert to check Williams occupation at that time and also any birth Cert we can find for Ernest / Albert again to check fathers occupation.

Is this just one big coincidence ?

Births Mar 1876

I'll look again in 1891 to see if Wm and hannah are still around and what his occupation is 10 years later ...

I'm aware that the age is a bit wonky, but what do you think?

Death Registration:
William Dorrington (age 31)
March qtr 1884
West Ham, vol 4a 46

I was unable to find William or Hannah after 1881, so this may explain why Albert/Ernest "drifted" to Australia as a teenager.

this is all very interesting...my family had never been able to get a straight answer out of the relatives...there are conflicting dob's from biographical materials, so the ernest/albert thing could definately be a lead. :)

albert had three daughters with leonora anderson, and the youngest was my grandmother, georgina madeline dorrington, who married and divorced noel arthur de mattos pickard. georgina was also known as bill and isobel at different points in her life...

...her other two sisters, deborah marjorie dorrington and leonore dorrington also went by different names...one of them, who was known as patricia, married a man named shand-kydd and they had one daughter, eve, in 1931. we don't know what happened to eve.  ???

the shand-kydd guy is the uncle of peter shand-kydd, who married diana spencer's mother, frances.

thanks for all of this research...

The Times, Friday, Aug 25, 1922; pg. 9; Issue 43119; col C
Forthcoming Marriages
"The engagement is announced of Archer Jack Greathed, youngest son of the late E A Greathed, formerly of Chandlers Ford, Hants, and Leonore Patricia, second daughter of Albert Dorrington, of Ruislip, Middlesex"

I suspect it was evidently Leonore who was known as "Patricia".

The above marriage may not have taken place. I've checked to the end of 1923 but can't see the marriage registration details.

Indeed, The Times Friday Feb 2 1945 announced that Capt Archer Jack Greathed and been killed in action and that he was the "dearly beloved husband of Mary Greathed".

so this marriage announcement was not to shand-kydd...i think his name was either norman or rowland...i have been told that patricia (leonore, thank you!) was married several times and may have lived at wyfold grange in the 30s with the shand-kydd guy and daughter eve...i was also told that one of her husbands was the 'love of her life' and that he was killed, but she wasn't mary...this is like an onion...peel away a layer and it gets stinkier :o

I can not help you myself but in 2002 I carried out some research on a Dorrington family who lived in Noak Hill, which is a small hamlet about three and a bit miles from Romford. This was done for someone who was researching his own family by the name of Cowland. I would suggest that you join the Romford Now and Then site where they have a genealogy page with family names on for people who are researching their own roots in the Romford area. Click on the Cowland name and leave a message for a gent by the of Ron Morris and if he is still around and active on that site he maybe able to help as I know that he has/ had some information on the Dorrington name.
Follow the link given and it should (with any luck) take you straight to the family history page of the Romford Now & Then site (you could also place the Dorrington name up on this page)

Ah! Perhaps the marriage did take place after all, but ended in divorce?

The Times, Wednesday, Jun 27, 1934; pg. 1; Issue 46791; col A
Marriages
"Shand-Kydd : Greathed - On June 22, 1934, at Marylebone Town Hall, Rowland Shand-Kydd, youngest son of W. Shand-Kydd and the late Mrs Shand-Kydd, of Highgate, to Mrs Patricia Greathed"

Marriage Registration
Rowland S KYDD
Patricia L. GREATHED
June quarter 1934
Marylebone 1a 1411
Lenore/Patricia is also listed as Patricia L. DORRINGTON in the Index, so both her names appeared in the marriage certificate.

The Times, Thursday, Jan 31, 1957; pg. 10; Issue 53753; col E
Will and Bequests
"Shand-Kydd, Mrs Patrick [sic] Leonore, of Harpsden, Henley-on-Thames, wife of Lieutenant Colonel Rowland Shand-Kydd, company director (gross £58,637)(duty paid, £18,131)"

Death Registration
KYDD, Patricia L.S. (age 50)
December quarter 1956
Henley vol 6b page 858

Other tidbits...

Rowland Shand Kydd was a director of Shand Kydd Ltd. So was his brother Norman.

Rowland appears to have remarried in 1960 to Ursula Georgina Hardman.

There was also the announcement of the engagement of Michael Anthony Hordern and Michele Burnett in March 1972. Curiously, the prospective groom was described as the younger son of Mr L A Hordern (Cane End House, Berkshire) and Mrs Rowland Shand Kydd.

I wonder if Mr L A Hordern was a former husband of Leonore/Patricia?

It get's even better.

If my very basic research is correct, Rowland's brother Norman had a son called Peter.

You might recognise the name.

Peter Shand Kydd was step father to Princess Diana  :o

OK - just another tidbit.

The death of Rowland Shand Kydd (born 3 July 1905) was registered in November 1992 in Westminster.

LA Hordern refers to Lebbeus Anthony Hordern. He was born 4 April 1914 in Sydney, New South Wales and died 26 May 1979 in Henley on Thames District. He married Ursula Georgina Gibbons in 1940 in Marlyebone, London. and they had 2 sons, Lebbeus Edward Anthony Hordern and Christopher M.G.A Hordern. Ursula had 2 further husbands: She married Albert Hardman in 1954 and then Rowland Shand-Kydd in 1960.

Not sure whether that helps or not!

Hello,
I don't know if this is still relevant for you, but I recently met someone in Edinburgh in my caring profession that knew Eve Shand-kydd. I was prompting her through a reminiscence activity around her teenage years and discussed her time studying at RADA in the late 40s early 50s. I noticed in one of the posts that you didn't know what happened to Eve-born to Patricia Shand Kydd in 1931. The dates seem to fit with the approximate ages at RADA. It might fill in a small gap for you.
