Am researching 'Catherine (Kate) Mansbridge' born Winchester about 1840 and died, New Malden about 1909
Would like to find out where and what she was doing BEFORE she married
railway worker, Harry Hayward in 1872. For example did she have any children prior to this marriage?
Can anyone help?
Thanks
WAG

I am struggling to find her in 1871 census. Do you have her marriage cert? If so, what is name and occupation of father?
And just to confirm a few facts rather than "about" dates:
Birth:
Jan/Feb/MAr 1840 Catherine Jane MAnsbridge
Winchester reg district
Marriage:
oct/Nov/Dec 1872
Guildford reg distr
Kate JAne Mansbridge
also on page HArry James Hayward
Cant find death on freeBMD
-
Yes, I cannot find her in 1871 either.
no - don't have a marriage cert.
yes - I concur with your general facts
-
No doubt you have her in 1881;
RG11 839 95 23
High Street Thames Ditton
Harry j Hayward 27 Station Agent bn Dorset
Kate J 37 wife bn Winchester
Frederick 7 son bn Surrey Virginia Water
Herbert 3 son "
Edith W 11 dtr bn Isle of Wight
Now, as they were married 1872, Edith was born before the marrriage. If she is Harry's dtr from a previous marriage he was only 16 when she was born. So it is more likely, as Kate is older, that Edith was Kates, but Harry has just accepted her as daughter.
Is this what you were getting at in your first post?
Next step is to find young Edith's birth - and look for her in 1871.
Have you done this yet? I dont want to duplicate what has already been done
-
Yes I agree.
Have been searching for Edith.
A possible candidate (Edith Mansbridge) turns up on the IOW, 1870.
-
Aha
Edith Isabel Mansbridge
Ap/May/Jun 1870
Isle of Wight
That looks like her, doesnt it? I will just go back to 1881 and see if the middle initial W could be an I
I think you will be best getting this birth cert to check out her parentage!
-
Yes, the middle name spoils the party.
Have also been looking whether this Edith ever got married - nothing found yet.
-
Found baby Edith Mansbridge in 1871!
RG10 1167 42 28
St Helens Hampshire
Frank Dash 40 Porter
Priscilla DAsh 31 wife
Edith Mansbridge 10 months nurse child bn IWShanklin
The question is - is this the daughter of Kate?
Need that birth cert!
Looks likely, as Kates daughter is clearly stated as 'born Isle of Wight' in 1881
I wouldnt rule anything out on the strength of that middle initial. Yes, it is a W , but he could have just been repeating the W from the line above as Herberts middle initial was a W.
-
I think it is.
The IOW helps to narrow the search.
Will get the birth cert.
Edith and her 2 brothers are proving difficult to trace.
-
Kate is in Kings Worthy in 1851 with family - I'll put it up just in case
william 36 thatcher
Elizabeth 49 b Newbury
Kate 11
Leah 9
Jane 7
Rhoda 3
all b Kings Worthy HO107/1673/136/11
-
Have you got HArry in 1871?
RG10 1997 8
Railway Station Moreton
John Lane Railway Porter
Ellen LAne wife
Harry Hayward 17 boarder Telegraph Clerk, bn Mainhull Dorset
-
yes I have seen that.
What I find odd is that Kate was so much older than Harry?
-
1891 Virginia Water
Harry J 37 railway station master
Kate K 45
Frederick T 17 railway clerk
Herbert W 13
E Horsley
sub reg Albury rg12/558/56/12

These things happen!
Now - I have a possible candidate for a Married Edith in 1891:
47 South something Street
St George Hanover Sq London
H/H of a Emily Clark, a Lodging housekeeper (h/h has several lodgers)
Edith Kempe married 21 bn Sandown Isle of Wight
now to hunt for a marriage!!
-
Yes, by 1891 Kate is telling porkypies about her age.
Am looking at Edith Kempe
Thanks
-
No immediate success with a Kempe marriage, however there is one in Oc/Nov/Dec in St George Hanover Sq with a Henry Rolfe Kempe, with one lady missing from the page!! I will try and look at the full index in a mo!
Meanwhile, if thatis not her, there is another possibility:
j/f/M 1897 Edith Isabel Hayward
in Brentford
to either Frederick Charles Stone or Percy Mainwaring Dunstan
i'll try and get them in 1901 to see if that Edith was bon I of W!!!
this is turnnig into a good one!
-
Firstly, no marriage of Edith Hayward or MAnsbridge that cross references with that Kempe marriage in 1885
-
Its Percy Dunstan who marries the Edith HAyward.
But in 1901 that Edith says she was born Kensington.
Back to the drawing board
-
Looking into Frederick Charles Stone or Percy Mainwaring Dunstan.
These names have come up before
-
can't see the name Mainwaring Dunstan in the 1901 census
-
Am making a search usig 'Edith Hayward' in place of Edith Mansbridge.
-
RG13 49 50 25 shows Percy M Dunstan with his wife Edith and small daughter.
But that Edith says she was bn Kensington, not Isle of Wight.
ANd she is 25, making her younger than 'our' Edith.
I think we can rule this one out
Though it is likely she was nee Hayward, as I found the marriage earlier
-
M Dunstan - of course
Any idea what the name of the young daughter?
-
Vera M
age 2
bn Hammersmith
-
Her birth:
oc/Nov/Dec 1898
Vera Mainwairing-Dunstan
!!!!
but i think we are off at a tangent!!!!!!
-
yes I agree. Shame though
-
Again I am searching for 'Edith hayward'
Thats her name in 1881.
Looking in 1891 & 1901 - maybe she never married?
-
Doing a search in 1901 with just 'Edith' with no surname and putting age down as between 30 & 32 yrs.

So much of this was already done on this earlier thread - and Little Nell even found that the 1870 Edith Mansbridge birth entry had MMN of Mansbridge.

It really wouldnt hurt to cross reference if your requests are overlapping / duplicating like this ... :(
-
I would like to say thank you for all contributions made to this search and apologise if there has been any duplication. It was not intended.
-
I feel rather denoralised, I must admit.
Did you not realise that this info had been given before, Wag, or were you aware I was devoting my afternoon to search for things that someone else had already spent their time finding?
OK, you've apologised, thanks.
But I only bought my subscrition on Monday, and this was the first search I had got my teeth into for somebody since. It WAS so much fun at the time.

Hi there
did you get anywhere with this enquiry? Percy M Dunstan was one of my great grandfather's sons, and he married Edith Hayward in 1897. You can read some more about them in my book (http://www.dunstanfamily.org.uk).

Mike
