Is there anyone out there with any old school photos of the children who went to St Josephs (Christian Brothers ) school 1930s-40s? I would be very interested as my late father spent four years of his young life there.

Hello Kerrill,
Have you tried the Connact Tribune?

This is letterfrack 2006. The colage does not have any records of what use to be the old industrial school. Many people turn up there looking for answer, but when the brothers left Letterfrack the destroyed many of the records. The Church like to keep it's secrets

Letterfrack-I feel I hate to write it's dispicable name,I read this thread a few days ago & it has emotionally cut me into two half's- one half is weaken to tears at the though of abuse, suffering & living nightmare these children went through, the other half is strongly inflamed with anger that it was aloud to happen.I would like to thank Kerrill for starting this thread & Migky for the photo's & inter net links-that has made us aware of this horror. The children are gone but definitely not forgotten - back then there was no one to save them - today it's not going to be pushed to one side & hidden, they deserve for the world to know what suffering & injustice they endured.Out of the darkness their souls shine brightly into our hearts.....................................nipy

Hi NIPY,
People who erect memorials for children who were stillborn or unchristened in the old days
also have their problems. Some land owners will not allow a memorial on their property ...
if they do allow it generally people aren't allowed on to the property to see the memorial
so many of these can be seen by the side of the road close to where the children were buried.

Hi Christopher,I know how the church treated the unchristened child that died in the olden days & how sad that was for their parents, but what I was really referring too is the type of crime against the children of St Josephs, like the report in the Galway Advertiser 27/11/2003-Sorry Christopher but I not very good at getting things across at times.Regards Nipy

I will give the Brother's credit i found them very helpful when inquiring about my grandmothers brother and when i found my great grandfathers obit in the paper 1905 it mentioned his brother Rev Bro Thomas O'Neill who i knew nothing about other than his birth i also inquired about him, they gave me the full history of his life as a Christian Brother and as a bonus another brother James who i also knew nothing about plus their burial places.
