I have just posted this picture up here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,281584.0/topicseen.html
The man in the uniform is my great grandpa, George Dickson. He was born in Galashiels, Selkirkshire and lived there all his life, and worked as a painter. I was led to believe by my Mum that this photo was pre-WW1.... and it has now been suggested that this is a WW1 uniform.
I have also just been told that it looks like his cap badge identifies him as an Argyle & Sutherland Highlander.
So, is this correct, and if so where do I start looking (without taking a trip to Kew) for info on his WW1 service or any other info??
Thanks from a beginner......

Yes, George is indeed an Argyll and Sutherland Highlander in the photo.
Here is a link to medal index cards, but there are 5 for George Dickson. However, as you get 6 medal index cards on the one download for £3.50, you are likely to receive your George's card among them.

A lovely photo BTW :D

Hi :)
It would be a bit o' luck if your George had a middle initial to help identify the correct man. You really want his regimental number to be able to follow-on your research. If his medals are available, his regimental number will be on the rim.
-
George didn't have a middle name unfortunately. But it looks like that has narrowed it down to one of three ;D
Thank you!

Hi,
The badge your grt/Grandfather is wearing in his ToS is the that of the Kings Own Scottish Borderers, not the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders, you can see the image of Edinburgh Castle in the center of the badge. The A&SH is a lot bigger than the Borderers Badge, in fact up until the forming of the Royel Regiment of Scotland the A&SH badge was the biggest in the British Army its nick name was the mess tin.I hope this of help to you,and the best of luck in your research.

Ooops ... yes Tomscot you are correct. It's hard to see clearly on the original photo - with my eyes, but on examining the restored photo George Dickson served with the KOSBs. :D

Ahhhhh.. thanks folks....
Spoke with my mother last night and she didnt know which regiment he belonged to but remembers playing with his general service medal when she was wee. Which my Grandpa (his son, also George Dickson) threw out with his four WW2 medals when they moved house, saying "I wont be needing these again"
KOSB would fit better with him being from Galashiels in Selkirkshire.
All these wee pieces help! Thanks!

Have been off poorly today and found George's service records (must have been added in the last batch added to ancestry) ;D
He was in the KOSB, conscripted on 29.9.1916. Service number 26949.
I have to decipher the records, but looks like he served in France and generally kept his head down.
Nice to have this resolved! Thanks for the help! :)
