Hi Kazcat
You may be already aware of this fact but I would suggest Marbrook is a middle name - so possibly either his mother or grandmother was named Marbrook.
It seems the Doughty family did use middle names.
I have looked for bap of James Marbrook Doughty but could not find it.

Bap 14 Mar 1819 George Blaxland Doughty Thanet Kent son of William & Elizb.
Bap 2 May 1819 James Brown Doughty St Laurence, Thanet son of William Nervan Doughty and Harriett.
Bap 11 Feb 1821 Richard Marbrook Terry son of James Terry & Frances
Bap 30 April 1834 Charlotte Blaxland Marsh dau of Nic. Rolfe Marsh & My.

But sorry if you know this already

Welcome Kazcat!

I hope that you will visit us often and make lots of progress with your research!  Please be sure to register your surnames on our SURNAME INTERESTS TABLE.

As you know the birthplace of James is Kent, I am going to move this post over to the Kent board for you, as you may find members with a more specialized knowledge of the county and its record resources on the Kent forum.

Best of Luck!

Rick :)

Hi Kazcat

Some parish register entries for St John Thanet (otherwise known as Margate - I presume this is where James was supposedly born according to the 1851 census) have been transcribed on the following site http://barry-white.members.beeb.net/

Unfortunately, the period covering James' approximate time of birth aren't covered but there are some interesting DOUGHTY/MARBROOK marriages.
