I am looking for information on the Wellard family of Kent. I know this is a very
popular name in this county and I don't have much of a lead but her it goes.
Henry Pearce Wellard from East Langdon, Dover was born about 1872. He had, I believe three
children:
Kathleen Nora born 1903 died 2003
Eric
Basil John Theodore born 1921
Sadly this is all I have. Can anyone help?

There are three couples having children Baptised in East Langdon about 1860s/1870s:
John Pierce & Elizabeth Wellard.
John Pierce & Mary Jane Wellard
John & Mary Pierce Wellard
And in the late 1700s/early 1800s:
Gladman & Sarah Wellard.
I love the name Gladman :)
I wish he was mine, it would make a nice change from William & Thomas!

-
You guys have certainly been helpful!
I am curious and confused about the middle name Pierce/Pearce.
Would that have been inherited from an in-laws surname?
And Gladman??
Is there anything out there about Nelly Aylett and her family.
Thanks
Scott :)
-
looking back at john p in 1871 the line goes straight thru his age, so think when transcribed on the text it has been written as 50 i would say then that the John in 81 and 71 are the sam John AS THE OTHER INFO I POSTED
have fun !
Jo
-
Thanks for that.
Does that mean that John P Wellard would have been about 35 or 36 in the 1871 census?
Scott
-
Hi Scott
A middle name that looks like a surname is usually the mother's maiden name.
Or sometimes a maiden name further back, such as the grandmother or even greatgrandmother.
It's very useful when tracing back, helps you to find the right family :)

I am sorry to be a pain but can someone check to see if Basil John Theodore Wellard's
birth certificate mentions his mother's maiden name, as only then can I be sure that we

I have since found out from Basil Wellard's daughter that the marriage of
John Pearce Wellard to Mary Jane Smith is the correct one. She was born in
1836 to Thomas Smith and Sarah Goddard. Can you add anything to this?
If not, thank you for the rich mine of info you have all gathered.

I've just been looking at Canterbury Baptisms for someone else, & noticed a lot ;D of Wellards there.
Betty
-
I don't know if there is still any interest out there for the Rootchatters but here it goes.
I think that although John Pearce Wellard married Mary Jane Smith in 1856 it is unlikely that she would have had Albert W Wellard, first seen in the 1891 Census (she would have been in her 50's). For that matter, although Fanny Stokes was probably his second wife and the mother of Henry Pearce Wellard, he was a widower by the 1881 Census.
I would like to focus on Fanny Stokes for a moment. Is there any info out there on her? A death cert perhaps?
Also is there anything that may suggest that the randy John Pearce Wellard found time to marry again sometime after 1881?
Scott ;)
Ps Still no mention of John Pearce Wellard's wilderness years between 1861-1871?
pps Found out that his mother was a Maria Hogbin. Any info there?
-
Sorry Jo
Just saw your entry( I must be more observant!). So it appears that John Pearce or Pierce Wellard married a Mary Wellard soon after the death of Fanny Wellard. Now would that be a case of a Wellard marrying a Wellard? She seems to be the mother of Henry Pearce Wellard.
Scott
-
hi again
Is there a death cert out there for Jane Aylett?

Hi to all talking about Wellards. Most of the families you speak of are all sorted out in my 2nd cousins', once removed line. My father was Richard John Pierce Wellard, and all our direct line has Pierce in the male names. We are not sure where that names comes from at this stage either. Jenny Wicks, nee Wellard, Australia
-
I am Henry Pearce Wellard's granddaughter. His third child, Harry Reaves Wellard, was my father. I have some information on the family, but not sure what you're looking for.
Do you know anything about Norah, my father's younger sister? My father married (date unknown) a Lily Mabel Field and then later (date unknown) divorced her before he married my mother, Gwynneth Mabelle North in 1952. However, his sister Kathleen Norah Field is recorded as the informant for his death in 1970! Seems to suggest she married Lily's brother. Brother and sister married to brother and sister? ::)
-
Leslie was oldest, then Aubrey, then my father Harry, then Norah, then Lilian then...
-
Hi, I am Basil Wellard's eldest daughter. I have been trying to find information on Harry as he and his family came to visit us when I was about 13. If this is the same Harry I think he died a few years later.
Norah died at the grand old age of 100. I went with my brother John to her 100th birthday party in Bournemouth
with my father who was then suffering from Dementia.
It is not unknown for brother and sister marry another brother and sister. as long as they are not blood relatives of course.
-
I visited Dad's family in Kent several times during my childhood. I remember meeting Aubrey & Pheney, my cousin George who drove steam trains at the Colliery, and I remember a Ruby. We used to go blackberrying on the slag heaps. I also remember a female cousin who was about my age, with a very strong family resemblance - I thought her name was Barbara. My father, Harry, died in 1970, which fits with your time-line. If it helps, my first name is Pauline.
-
Hi Pauline.
Did you have dark curly hair? I remember one of the children who visited us was the image of my younger brother Rodney and about the same age. He had dark curly hair as have most of the boys in my family. They hate it.
We did visit Aubrey and Pheobe several times I met George and his wife they had a son he was about ten then.
Leslie used to live with us. He never married. Eric and his wife Sylvia moved in with Grandad (Henry Pearce) and Leslie after Granny died. When Eric and Sylvia moved to Watford after Grandad died Leslie came to live with us.
-
I should have added. My name is Carol..Ruby was George's wife.
Carol
-
And in the late 1700s/early 1800s:
Gladman & Sarah Wellard.
I love the name Gladman :)
I wish he was mine, it would make a nice change from William & Thomas!
Betty
Sorry for jumping in two years late (but I've only recently joined Root so this is all new to me!!!)
I'm sure Gladman is my Ancestor and would like more information so ordered and paid for a couple of Kent Parish CDs but disappointed to find less on them than there is on the free FamilySearch Site.
Does anyone have access to the Tilmanstone (St Andrews) records, should I be starting a new Post ? :-[

-
Hi stevecw
It's a shame you didn't find the CDs useful. I wouldn't be without mine, they have helped me a great deal.
It's best to start a new thread for your Tilmanstone request, hopefully someone will have the records.
Betty
-
Thanks Betty !
The CD's are only helpful if they have the family you are looking for on them but Yes, that apart, there is a lot of data on them and I could always use them for Look Ups for others ?
