Title: BANISTER/BANNISTER family - NSW
Post by: april betty on Saturday 09 February 08 00:22 GMT (UK)
Hi, I am new to this, and am trying to find my grand-father (Amos)'s brother William.   He was an assisted emigrant to Australia, sailing on the SS Devon, leaving the UK in December, 1880 and arriving in Sydney, NSW Jan. 1881, aged 18.    He died c1943.  His parents were James Bannister and Mary Ann Malin.  He was born in Headington, Oxfordshire, in 1872, James was born at Beckley (1830), Oxfordshire and Mary (c1833) at Emmington, also in Oxfordshire.
My mother could only remember about an apple orchard, and a daughter who was a nurse/matron.
My grand-dad died in 1949, and I have no further information.  Not much to go on is it.  Any help appreciated.

Hi April Betty

Welcome to Rootschat

I hope we can help you!

Just to note - William BANNISTER was age 18 when he arrived in Sydney 1881. So he was born abt 1862. Can see him in the 1871 Census in Headington, with his parents.

Is it Australian records you are looking for - ie what happened to him after he arrived ? Is it in regards to him that Mum recalls the Apple Orchard - and was it his daughter or a sister? who was a nurse/matron?

Cheers
AMBLY

Many thanks for all that info.   Yes it is only Australian records I need.

Mum said she thought he went to live on an apple orchard, and it began with a C(!)
She was to go to Australia to live with the family after her mother died, but WW1 intervened and she never went.
When I came  to NZ in 1959, she wanted to know if it was near Australia(!) as her cousin was matron of an Australian hospital.   She said it might be Melbourne

Alas, she just wasn't interested in family history.

Many thanks AMBLY for the Banister/Bannister info.    I have a feeling this just might be 'my' family,
I have looked up mariage data and found spouses for most of them.  Ethel, Walter and George seem to be 'family' names.

I notice that the Birth Index is only to 1907.  So how to I find out what children there are?

Thelma Bannister       married Claude R Smith     - Lismore        -  1935
George T Bannister         "       Lillie Pearce          - Bellingen      - 1923
Herbert W Bannister       "       Annie Marshall      - Grafton        - 1923
Ethel Bannister               "       George E Baxter   - Lismore        - 1919
Walter Bannister             "       Margaret M Rae    - Randwick     - 1923

Maybe someone will recognise these names and make contact?     PLEASE

Many thanks.

hello  there

The death certificate for William Bannister  will  list  the  names  of  his  children , you  can get a  copy  through a  transcription agent for around $15.00 also include his parents names and where he was born etc. Very good NSW certificates.  It  will definately confirm if he is your William Bannister.

Wow, tropicalj, all this info is overwhelming, and I will certainly follow it all up.  Talk about some coincidences, my son lived in Thuringowa, and two of my grand-children were born there!.  Spent lots of time at both libraries, with my 'librarian counterparts'.   They lived by the River, went about 4 houses then into the Ross River Park!.    Aitkenvale I think it was called, they also previously had lived at Hermit Park.
2nd coincidence is my mother-in-law came from the Hennessey's!, Ireland, Leinster.   But beware, Hennessey can be spelt in 5 different ways!,    even to Hanasheen, Hennecy, Hennecsy among others. It was phonetically spelt, gaelic speech before being anglicised.
Good hunting, and oodles of thanks.

Thanks to Ambly and Tropicalj    :oI have started on the Bannisters who were in eventually in Lismore, Not getting very far....

BUT>    How long does it take to get a death certificate out of the NSWgov. records.    I ordered a death certificate on 11 Feb.  monies uplifed out of my bank account on 13th Feb. and I am still waiting,,  no replies or even acknowledgement of e-mails querying hold-up.   Anyone else have similar problems?

Is it quicker and easier to use a transcription agent?
Title: Re: Banisters/Bannisters
Post by: tropicalj on Wednesday 05 March 08 22:05 GMT (UK)
Hello  there AP

Yes it is quicker to use a transcription agent  but   I  have  found about a  three week  wait  for  the  NSW record office.  It  has only been  a  bit over three weeks  for  you  so  it  could turn up in  the post today. ;D

Thankfully  it is  not a  Qld certificate  that can  be a couple of  months on  the odd occasion.

Have  you sent them off an  email query?

Someone once said  patience is a virtue  but  i  don't  think  he or she was a  genealogist.

Hi Jenn

Yes, I have sent off two enquiries, not even an acknowledgement.    Still my late husband said he married me for my patience.......(I agree, THEY are not anxious, enquiring genealagists.)     Still he has been missing since 1880, so a few more days.......
Cheers.

Have now got death certificate for William Bannister.  New query.
His son James Byron Bannister married Olive Vidler beginning 1924  he died 23 Dec. 1924. buried in Lismore.    How can I find out why he died so young?    The Richmond River Historical Soc. have a memorial newspaper notice for him, but it just gives his date of death.

There must be some Bannisters out in the wide blue yonder that could help;
descendants of Walter, Ethel, Ada, Herbert, George, Thelma and Elsie where are you?

Hello Cando ... Nice to meet you!

Thank you for posting the link to April Betty's original post regarding the NSW Bannisters. I found it from the Google search engine and had only the print preview version. I had to join the site to reply but then couldn't find the original posting.

I hope April Betty sees my posting ... the information came from Tim Soane's site http://family.soane.net/descendancy.php?pid=P3492171553&box_width=100&chart_style=1&generations=15&show_full=1 which lists this particular Bannister descendancy right back to William Bannister (1735-1768).

I believe this particular Family Tree was compiled by Margaret Elisabeth Callaghan in Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.  She is a member of Ancestry.com. Thank you Margaret, your research has been extremely valuable!

My interest in the NSW Bannisters is more of a personal nature in that, like my great-grandfather, Henry Bannister, they left their ancestral home of Headington/Beckley/Oxford and moved further afield. I just wanted to know what became of them, how they lived their lives in the "New World" and perhaps link up with some of their descendants. I am on Facebook....

Hi
My name is Scott Banister and I saw that you were looking for Banister family.  I'm not sure if there is a connection or not, but my Great Grand father was Henry B. Banister b. Yass in 1855 he was married to Venina May Pennington b. 1876 the Gap Qld.  My Father is Stanley Henry Banister the son of Leslie and Ruth Banister.
I was just wondering if there is a connection as I'm looking for information on family members for our family tree.

Hello, Found your messages. I am looking at your Bannister family and also Kennedy.

Henry B Bannister b Yass 1855 - mother Sarah born Somerset? what a family to trace. Sarahs daughter Lucy Bannister (Married Bettini) is my g-g grandmother. Please tell me - have you ever found a birth record for Henry B Bannister and what is the B for.

My other side married into Kennedy from Tipperary. Rody Kennedy (father Patrick and mother Mary Carthy) came to OZ married Connolly- no Andrew (that I know of) . Not having much luck with the details but have some siblings names & birth dates & locations - Drom, Fishmoyne etc etc.

Lets talk

Erin

Hi Erin
Glad you posted yes I do have information on Henry Bnaister as he is my great great Grand father and Sarah Banister being my GGGrandmother so somewhere along the line we are cousins lol.
I do have a photo copy of Henry's Death Certificate not clear but you can make it out.
The Second name of Henry Im still never learnt so not sure about the B as nothing on Death Certificate.
As for the Kennedys the a quite a few different lines that came from Tipperray that I have found.  There doesn't seem to be (Hey but I could be wrong) a connection along that line.  Hope this may be of a help.  have a bit of info on your family line so which of Lucy's line are youe are descentant of,  Ive only gone as far as Lusy's children but would like to know more for research.
Great to hear from you and hope you will post again ;)

Hi Scott,
The Kennedys are everywhere - but not the ones I am looking for!! Like you.
I have an ANDERSON tree on Ancestry(private as it is WIP). My grandfather Anderson went to OZ in 1908 from Waterford but his mother had already been in OZ since 1888. Her mother was Connolly from Tipperary(Ballypatrick). Her Aunt Ellen Connolly married Rody Kennedy Tipp) in Melbourne.

My granfather, John Anderson married Violet Pearce, whose father was John PEARCE. ( it took 2 years and a lot of luck to find out who he really was). He is the son of Lucy BANNISTER , born 1865 Goulburn the year before she married Jean BETTINI. Baptised John P(ierce) Bannister & mother Lucy Bannister (no father). He always named  mother as Lucy BELL & father John PEARCE (this was fictional) . I think that he was kept close to the Bettini family though. When he dies his wife Maragaret married his nephew (son of Catherine Bettini his half sister). Margaret was a NOBLE (father Francois NOBLE from France) born Moruya. All ended up in Charters Towers and Townsville. I am guessing there was some other links in the families - yet to be discovered.

If you know anything about Sarah Bannisters life then she had 4 partners/poss husbands. It is all so complicated. Your Henry B was allegedly born "Henry Bannister PEARCE". Have you heard this? I cannot find a record of his birth. Story goes he dropped the PEARCE as he did not like his father? I can't find any version of his name YET. His marriage record also has Henry B PEARCE m Venena Pennington in Moruya (Does that match your Henry?) BUT his death record shows him as Henry Banister with wife Venina Penning . So the story looks right.

Can't wait to hear what you have on the family. I continue to struggle to find where Sarah B was actually from and how many children she actually has with which names and what is fact and what is "fiction".

I am sure I have confused you but post back to see what we both have . We are cousins I guess (Ancestry tells me you are my 3rd cousin). Are you in QLD ? Are you ok with the flooding? I am from Townsville but living in the UK so have the ice & snow instead.

Look forward to hearing from you
Erin

That would be great.  I actually have a family tree set up in Gene Reunited.  If you want to see.  It has both the Banister line and the Kennedy line so you can see if there is a connection side at al.

By the way did you get the cioy of Henry's Deacth Certificate?

This seems relevant.   A story about the destruction of the old Bateman's Bay cemetery at the Anglican Church and the last person to be buried there was Lucy BETTINI in 1927, buried besides her husband.    She was the great great grandmother of a lady being interviewed.

There are quite a number of trees on Ancestry for Lucy Bannister and Bettini families. Including mine.  have you access to Ancestry to view them? There are a lot of details.

Are you after information on the Bannister family side of Lucy Bannister who married Bettini. I am able to help with the Bannister side. Are you looking at the Bettini side or at the History of Lucy Bannister?
She is my 2nd Great Grandmother
