Title: Kay family 1841 census Edinburgh, births query
Post by: kooky on Saturday 09 February 08 15:23 GMT (UK)
I have been hunting for the births of Margaret, William and Richard Kay, aged 16, 13, and 11 in the 1841 census at High St. Duddingston.
After one or two difficulties with SP, I found a birth for a William Kay 9th Dec. 1829.

While I do not think this is the correct one, I was puzzled by the entry which was

"Registered March 1865 on the authority of a relative warrant by Frederick Hallard Esq.,sheriff substitute of Edinburghshire, dated 3rd March 1865,   signed WPDundas Registrar General
the above entry was transcribed by me at Portobello
    on the 9th March 1865
                                      Alex Paterson .................registrar"

Can anyone suggest what might have been happening here? There are other similar entries.

Also, on  FREECEN next to Margaret Kay age 2 months there is "su" in the remarks column. Does anyone know what this means?

Thank you! I am not sure who their parents were. My gt gt gr father Joseph was born in Tynemouth, as was his sister. His brother John was born in Newcastle on Tyne, where their parents, John Kay and Margaret Watson were married, at St. John's in Grainger Street.
I am not aware of any relatives in Edinburgh.
The 3 older children are obviously not Joseph and Anns, but the younger 2 may be.
They were John age 1, and Margaret age 2 mths.
I can not find their births in SP.

Hi just joined and noticed your earlier posts on this Kay family. I'm a descendent of same family (Agnes Hogg Kay) the Kays later married the Bruce's (lauder area) I have family photos of the Kays including Agnes with Margaret etc . I will get back in touch with details if you like. Best wishes, Amanda Russell
