Post by: Christopher on Thursday 14 February 08 02:20 GMT (UK)
The Longford Westmeath Argentina Society (http://www.webspawner.com/users/ldwhargentinasoc) was formed in 1989. It is a historical and cultural group, which aims to promote a greater awareness of and maintain the relationship between the descendants of Irish emigrants to Argentina, and the community living in Co. Longford today. The site mentions  "The Southern Cross" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Southern_Cross) which is an Argentine newspaper founded on 16th January 1875 by Patrick Joseph Dillon (1842-1889), a Roman Catholic priest, editor and politician who was born in Tuam, east Co. Galway. The Hogan Stand website tells the history of  "The Westmeath connection with Argentina." (http://www.hoganstand.com/general/Identity/geese/stories/argentina.htm)
