Title: Deans/Geddes family in Down
Post by: tigger_lass on Tuesday 19 February 08 11:39 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am finally starting on the Irish side of my tree and am looking to get information on my gg grandmother Jane Deans who was from Ireland. Her parents were Hugh Deans and Margaret Geddes who appeared to have moved to Lanarkshire, Scotland c1851 as they appear on the 1851 census there and had a daughter Jessie born after the census was done.

1851 - 133 Castle Street, Hamilton

Hugh Deans 35 Labourer Ireland. Down
Margaret Deans 36 Labourer's Wife Ireland, Down
Eliz. Deans 11 Labourer's Daughter Ireland, Down
Margt Deans 8 Labourer's Daughter Ireland, Down
Jane Deans 6 Labourer's Daughter Ireland, Down

From Hugh (1884) and Margaret's (1900) DCs, Margaret's parents were not known but Hugh's were listed as William Deans and Margaret Thomson.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction? I am pretty able to deal with looking up Scottish records but I have no experience of Irish ones.

Many thanks

Tracey

Strangely enough to get information on the family in Ireland you will probably have more luck searching through the Scottish records. For example. did Margaret die in Scotland? there may be information about her family on her death certificate, etc.

Yes, Margaret and Hugh both died in Scotland, hence the details I have regarding Hugh's parents but there were no details for Margaret's, as I said.

Where is a good source for Irish/Down BMD?

Hello

I am descended from the Deans family - Eliza Deans - Jane Dean's sister - she was my great, great grandmother, and therefore I am also descended from Margaret Geddes.

I share the same frustration about her death record not supplying her parents details but am trying to find out more on the Geddes line. One thing i do know is that they are from, in and around, Killinchy in County Down  (as were the Deans). There was a cluster of Geddes family members in that area and are graves going back to the 1700s - but as yet I can't find proof of who Margaret's parents were.

I am aware from your postings that you have carried out research on the Scottish side, but just to let you know that I have carried out extensive research on the Deans - Hugh + Margaret + their 4 daughters - Eliza, Margaret, Jessie and Jane.  As I say, i am descended from Eliza and have a MASSIVE family tree stemming from her. Margaret and her family went to England and I have begun to trace their descendants. Jessie Deans migrated to Canada in 1911 with her family and I have significant details on them and some of their details. With regard to your direct ancestor Jane - I have a photo of her and her husband and a number of her descendants and have traced and been in contact with current relatives. I'm happy to share this information with you if you haven't already got it.

By the way, if you are JANE, who I have already made contact with, please forgive me Jane, I can't tell from this who you are.

Regards

Tom Donnelly - descendant of Margaret Geddes

Hi Tom

Thank you so much for the information, I would be grateful for anything you could supply on the Deans'. I am descended through Jane Deans and Andrew Thomson's son James.

Trish1120 - the marriage looks a good one but will need to look closer at the birth. Thank you!

Thank you both - I believe that the marriage is correct even though Hugh's surname is mispelt - not sure about the birth, but might be. I will keep in touch and share as much as I can.

Tracey - could you supply me with info on your line?

My understanding is that James Thomson married Annie Scott on 17 Nov 1905 in Cambusnethan, Wishaw. I think I have 3 children for them that I am certain about and possibly three more that I am not (there could be more of course) - would be great if you could confirm details and to see which line you come from.

The three I have which i think are right are:

Andrew Thomson b28 Aug 1906 Cambusnethan
Annie Thomson b19 Jan 1909 Cambusnethan - TWIN
Jane Thomson b19 jan 1909 Cambusnethan - TWIN

There were 3 Thomson's born Cambusnethan with 'Scott' as their middle name, so I was wondering if any of the below were children of James Thomson and Annie Scott?

David Scott Thomson b1912  -  John Scott Thomson b1916 - Hugh Scott Thomson b1920.

Any info you can provide would be gratefully received. Watch out for more info from me soon, for now though here is another photo.  The attached is JANET THOMSON - Jane Deans and Andrew Thomson's fifth child (as you know they had seven). Janet was born 19 Nov 1880 in Cambusnethan and died Oct 10th 1955 in Paisley, Scotland. She married a Paisley poilceman called David Wilson and had EIGHT children including one who died in a famous WW2 incident and another who died having an abortion (she was divorced at the time). I am in contact with the descendants of one of Janet's children and have a number of photos - they are in Canada.

Anyway - the attached is Janet Thomson - your James Thomson's sister.

Thanks

Tom

Hi Tom

Thanks for the photo...am loving seeing my relatives!

James and Annie had 13 children in total.

Andrew
Jean
Annie
Margaret
James
Hugh
Christina
Janet
Elizabeth
Lily
Helen
John
Marion

Helen was my very much loved gran and passed away in 2007. Her parents settled in Allanton, Lanarkshire and her dad worked at Kingshill Pit as a foreman. She married in 1946 and had 9 children, 8 of whom are living. She lived all her married life in Shotts. You can see the Thomson's don't go in for small families lol.

Where are you from?

Tracey

Of the 13 there is only one girl left alive.

Tom....keep those pictures coming! ;D

I've emailed them to one of my aunties and we are racking our brains trying to work out who in the family Jane Deans reminds us of...her face is so familiar   ???

I didnt know very many of my gran's siblings but did meet Lily, Lizzie, Mamie (Marion) and John. He was in the CID with Fife Police. Only Lizzie is still alive.

Hello again Tracey

I suggest we move to e-mail - I see a message on here about info being removed relating to living persons - so let's do this through e-mail - I can attach photos that way.

Now, the issue of who Jane Deans reminds you of - that makes me smile as it could be that the famous Geddes/Deans 'nose' is the key here. Jane has a distinctive nose - well, so do numerous descendants of her sister Eliza (my great, great grandmother). I will attach a photo below of Eliza Dean's daughter (my great grandmother) Jane Melvin.  Jane lived to 88 and this was taken late in life, but one thing that you will notice straight away is the famous 'snub' nose - it is one of the strongest genetic 'hand-me-downs' that I have ever seen. Two of my Aunties (born 1913 and 1928) had it - I'll attach their photos to prove all this. What is spooky is that it comes right down to the present day. My oldest Auntie (Elizabeth Donnelly) was born in 1913 - she died a long time ago, but I am in facebook contact with her daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter who is only 15 - and she has the 'nose.'  It is quite remarkable.

As you know, I have photos of two lines of descendants from Jane Deans (1st child Andrew Thomson and 5th child Janat Thomson - siblings of James Thomson of course) and yes 'the nose' is there too!!! I am wondering if this may be why Jane's photo is sparking a 'I have seen that face before' reaction - do you have any old photos of relatives - might be worth checking (would love to see any you have).  Oh and on that note, thank you so much for giving me the names of your gran and her siblings - would it be possible to get dates and marriage details. I looked on scottis records but they don't have details and there are so many Thomsons anyway there is no way of me telling who is who even with the names you gave me.  I really would appreciate it if you have that info.

Anyway here are some more photos to keep you going

oops - hit the button without attaching photos - but it won't let me attach anything anyway because of  file size problems here - I will need your e-mail to send you anything else Tracey.

Re: Jane Deans descendants - you now have a photo of Jane and her husband Andrew Thomson and a oneof her 5th child Janet Thomson - I'll send some more relating to Janet and to 1st son Andrew via e-mail (I would suggest that you e-mail me your e-mail address  - don't post it on here)

Thanks for that last message.

To continue the photos

Here is a photo of Jane Dean's son Andrew Thomson born 31 Oct 1867 - died 1939. He was the first child and he had many jobs including being a coalminer (like his namesake father), a bottler' and 'beer dealer' and finally an 'aerated water manufacturer.'

Obviously, this is your James Thomson's much older brother. He was married twice: His first wife was Annie Philp 1872-1898 who unfortunately died of TB after bearing four children by Andrew.  I have photos of Annie his wife and all four children - which I will send you via e-mail.  For now - here is Andrew Thomson:

Hi to all,

I am in Australia seeking Ireland information about John Deans who was born about 1835 in Ireland and Married Celina White/Whyte about 1857 in Scotland. Not sure where, but Celina born about 1837, and came from Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland. The following is the details of their 1881 Census;

Old No 1 Houses
Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland

John DEANS, married, 47, male, Ireland, Head of House, General Labourer
Cellia DEANS, married, 42, female, Paisley, Renfrew, Wife
Robert DEANS, unmarried, 22, male, Paisley, Renfrew, son, Breaksman
Mary DEANS, unmarried, 19, female, Paisley, Renfrew, daughter, Dressmaker
John DEANS, unmarried, 18, male, Paisley, Renfrew, son, Screeman
James DEANS, unmarried, 16, male, Omoa, Lanark, son, Platelayer
William DEANS, unmarried, 13, male, Omoa, Lanark, son, Scholar
Thomas DEANS, unmarried, 11, male, Wishaw, Lanark, son, Scholar
Joseph DEANS, unmarried, 8, male, Wishaw, Lanark, son, Scholar
Cellia DEANS, unmarried, 6, female, Wishaw, Lanark, daughter, Scholar
Lettia DEANS, unmarried, 3, female, Wishaw, Lanark, daughter
David DEANS, unmarried, 1, male, Wishaw, Lanark, , son
I am wondering whether there is a connection with the Deans/Geddes family line as it appears the timing to the Lanark area from Ireland as about the same. At this stahe, all I know is that he came from Ireland.

Hope someone can help.

Best Regards,

Wildcats13

Not the same family line I'm afraid but I looked and here is some information for you.

Your JOHN DEANS was born in 1832 and died aged 81 in Cambusnethan, Motherwell, Scotland (cardiac failure). His father was Robert Deans an 'Estate Overseer' and his mother Letitia Shirkey.

Hope that helps.

Hello tomdon

I've been researching my husband's family tree, one of the branches also comes from Elizabeth/Eliza/Lizzie Deans through her daughter Margaret Melvin. I note that back in 2012 you said that Eliza and James Melvin had six children, I've found seven children, two of them with the name Hugh, the first baptised in 1860 who presumably died and the second baptised in 1870.

I think the Hugh Dines marriage in 1838 to Margaret Geddes is not a mistranscription of Deans as the name Dines is very common to Killinchy. It is more likely to be Hugh Dines a fisherman whose
only known child with Margaret Geddes was Margaret Dines born c 1839.

If you do have any photographs of Elizabeth/Eliza/Lizzie Deans, James Melvin or her daughter Margaret Melvin? If you would be prepared to share them I know my husband would be delighted as unfortunately his family don't have any photographs really beyond his grandmother. Eliza is his GGG-grandmother.

Thanks and best wishes. Tanya
