Could someone tell me what a "Feuar & Merchant" is as a business in Rothes, Morayshire.

I googled Feuar and got the following ...
The owner of a plot of land or property in Scotland
one who holds a feu (land or house) at a rent.
It looks as though your merchant may have been a landlord too.

Feuar (or heritable proprietor): this interest broadly equated to that of the freehold interest in England. This was the person who had practical and legal ownership of the property, the right to occupy and who was obliged to observe or perform the feuing conditions being accountable to the superior therefor. The feuar as owner was free to sell and deal as he wished and held that interest in perpetuity. The feuar or owner was able to grant leases.
