Title: Anyone got a Birkenhead street directory for after 1906 ?
Post by: chrissiehope on Saturday 23 February 08 16:27 GMT (UK)
Hi,

Family lore says that Frances Ann Jones (nee Heaps) had a shop on Conway St in Birkenhead. It was on the corner of another street whose name I forget, and I think it was a confectioner's shop (but I could be wrong...). Frances' husband was Robert Jones, just in case it was in his name - they married in 1906.

Hope this is not too vague !

Cheers,
Chris

hi
In the 1914 Kelly's Directory there is a Mrs Frances Jones confectioner at 122 Beckwith St, Birkenhead (in the block between Cathcart & Vittoria Sts) and also a Robert Jones confectioner at 72 Chester St Birkenhead.

Hi Chrissie
In the 1911 i found the same as Andycand BUT in the 1938 I found this............

Conway Street
223 Jones Mrs Mona Frances Confectioner

Just underneath  these addresses there is a street called Park Rd which i googled on Google Maps and these roads still exist.

The reason I googled was I was born in Moreton Wallasey  Wirral and now live in Sydney Australia ;D

I also have 1894 Directory in  case you need anything else!

Cheers
Maureen

Hi
In 1914 223 Conway St was occupied by  Harry Douglas CALLISTER confectioner. 223 Conway is between Craven St and Park Road East close to the main entrance to Birkenhead Park.

I too was born in Wallasey and live in Australia. I also used to work for Birkenhead Buses and passed the location on most trips.

I have looked at where 223 Conway Street would be. If you headed towards St James Church (away from the Town Hall) the odd numbers where on the left hand side. Thats how Birkenhead roads where designed in the 1800's.
Anyway, where this shop was, is now a green verge. There are maisonettes/houses behind this. After Craven Street, it is Patterson Street. At the bottom of this is a Tool hire shop and then its the Queens Hotel Pub on the corner of Conway Street and Park Road East.

As for 122 Beckwith Street, thats not there either.

I have checked local yellow pages with business' I know to check on the numbers to confirm this.
Hope this helps

Hello Chrissie

I have seen your notices regarding the Hindley family and now a request re: Frances Ann Jones nee Heaps.  The reason is because my dad and his sister's mother Mary Ellen Edge was originally Mary Ellen Heaps one of William Henry Heaps children living at 50 Mill Street Higher Tranmere.  Unfortunately Mary died in 1933 and my dad along with his sister went to live with Aunty Nancy and Uncle George, Hannah (Heaps) and George Rogerson.  Mary Ellen had married Frederick Joseph Edge in 1922 and although he remarried in 1938 to Lydia Pinch, Ted and Marjorie stayed with Uncle George and Aunty Nancy until their marriages in the mid fifties.

Frances Ann and Robert Jones may be Aunty Cissie and Uncle Bob who according to my dad eventually ended up in Corwen where Bob could have been the stationmaster.  Unfortunately my dad and Aunty Marjorie are now deceased so I cannot confirm this story but whenever we were out along the A5 in Wales going through Corwen he would point out to somewhere they lived.  I never really knew whether it was pre or post ww2 but I got the impression that they went on holiday to their home.

I did have a look at the electoral registers for 122 Beckwith Street but the Frances Jones listed in the directories is living with a Joseph Jones up to 1939 I think.  I cannot recall any stories about confectioners in the Heaps family folklore sorry for that.  We used to go to Aunty Nancy's big Christmas parties on Christmas day during the 60's when a lot of relatives were invited but that was 40 years ago and it is hard to remember everything about them.  They stopped when Aunty Nancy fell ill one year and we just visited them on normal family visits without the stress placed on her to cater for everyone, which she was always doing however old she was.

I have had a look at all the marriage records for the Hindleys of Tranmere born to Margaret A Heaps and recently travelled down to Wrexham to get the details of Edward Heaps Hindley and Gwendoline Capper.

I am new to Rootschat so haven't got a profile or anything like that and I will end with my real first name as well as my user name if that is allowed.

Hope this is of some use to you Chrissie.

Hi Janet,

Thanks for this - the Hindley / Heaps connection looks promising !

Edward Heaps Hindley & Gwendoline Capper are definitely part of my family - if I've got it right, Edward was my mother's uncle, and they recently met up with his son Cyril (mum's cousin) after many years out of touch !

Bob Jones we know came from Rhagad estate near Corwen, and I think he may well have been involved with the railways - I haven't got my Heaps info to hand just at the moment !!

If you'd like to get in touch direct, I will send you a private message with my email address - I think we could both fill in a few gaps !

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris

Thank you for your reply and your offer about the personal message so you can show your e-mail address.

I am afraid I am still a bit unsure about how to use Rootschat notify button so if you want to giver out any more info about the Heaps especially Bob could you do it by the main rootschat route.  Sorry although I am sure that you have got a lot of information about the family.  I hope that I will get any reply and perhaps you could tell me what to do to get a personal message.

Thanks again

Hello eccy, I've just googled some info on Heaps family and found this site and your post below. I remember Aunty Nancy and Uncle George and your parents, like you I went to the Christmas parties. Have no profile as yet, but would like to be in touch.

Hi Pam
Welcome to Rootschat  :D

It's been a while since I originally posted, so I can't remember what happened next !

If you like I will send you a private message (PM) with my email address and then I can pass on what info I have (it's mostly my parent's area, as it's my Mum who is related to the Heaps family, but my Dad does most of the research now)

Cheers,
Chrissie
PS to eccy - did you get in touch, and if so, did I reply ?! If not, then I'm sorry - I've had some health problems this past 18 months - please get in touch again.
