Thanks you so much Anne,
I had seen the first article before but the new one is much more complete.
There is another account too of how they moved through the buildings of the Terrrace, with parts of Elizabeth's account
http://www.dublinfirebrigade.ie/Images/Report_16_Moore_St_tcm35-37156.pdf
Both of these refer to the large numbers of civilian casualties.
In 1911, some of my family were living in the Terrace at Moore St, elsewhere by 1917, so trying to find out if they would have been there during the Rising.

Hi,
Does anyone have info on John O'Grady who was killed during the Easter Rising , I believe he was under MaDonagh's command, especially interested if O'Grady had any connection with the Shelbourne hotel, if he was there before rising etc., after he was killed?
Thanks,
John

My 1st Post-
Funny my mom said my grandfather did well for drinks telling the story
of being the youngest of the Irish Citizen Army in 1916.
Takes on a different feel seeing his name on the list
Hugh Holohan
Got homework to do to learn more.
-
Hi Roy T
Welcome to Rootschat!
You'll get loads of great stuff off here and loads of helpful people.
You struck gold there, becouse you've got an address as well.
Do you know where your Holohans came from?
My ggrandmother's name was Anastasia (Hoey), but there are no Anastasia's in the family I know of earlier on the Hoey line.
One of the few marriages I've seen was of a Hoey to an Anastasia Holohan/ Hallohan / O'Holohan or similar.
I'll look for it, but I wanted to welcome you to Rootschat on your first post!
Best wishes

Hello,
I have just joined and I would like to know does anyone have a list of names of Irish Citizen Army members who were in the Stephen's Green Garrison?
thanks,
sonoma
-
Looking for info on an ICA member called John Neale who fought and died in 1916.
See here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,311340.0.html
thank you.
-
One member on the list is spelled wrongly, its James Brougham, 10 Laurence Street, Dublin. He was my great grandfather. Jeanf :)
-
Very interesting material - Do you have any data relating to members of the Cuman na mBan?
Marc
-
I Know that Cumman na Mban (League of Women) was started in 1914. During the Easter Rising some were arrested but most were released then reorganised under Countess Constance Markievicz.
-
Did Ardal O'Hanlon's WDYTYA help with sources for more information ?
-
Hi i have tried to view the WDYTYA on RTE but it will not allow streaming to the UK - Did it explore the Cumman na mBan ?
-
No , it didn't show anything about that , but did seem to suggest extensive sources , I think , in the National Archives . Have you phoned Dublin to ask ?
-
Linden
I'll have a look into that - Thanks
Marc

The National Archives has a website but is a bit limited to what can be read online.

Dublin (Old tenements stock) living in Birmingham - Fathers name Aiden?
-
Hi Marc,
does'nt sound familiar, these Kellys appear to have started off in Dublin
and later in the midlands where there was a family with ten children.
one of whom enlisted in the 5th infantry group of the irish defence forces in the sixties in athlone then lived in dublin 12 area of dublin.as some are possibly still living I can't mention first names although I should say they are not directly connected to my other surname interests.
happy hunting,Anne

Hi everyone
Sounds like Ireland have their own series of WDYTYA, I hadn't realised :-[ Do you know if there are DVDs on the series that I can buy ?
Bytheway, my Moms best friend was a Kelly from a very large family in Irishtown, her friend moved to Coventry.

Hi There. I think we have a connection. I am married to Marian Brougham, Grand Daughter of James Brougham. Her father was Henry Brougham. We are obviously doing the same research and could probably usefully share info. BTW I think James was a member of the Irish Volunteers. He sided with the pro-treaty side. I have a photo of him in Free State Army UNiform. I have also found his grave and recently left a note asking for the person who tends the grave to make contact. Theres lots more. Please drop me an email at

My Grandfather Patrick Dalton (also known as Patrick J. D'Alton) was in the Dublin Brigade of the Old IRA. I understand that he was in the Mendicity Institute in 1916 at the age of 15, I believe he was in Fianna Eireann. I recently obtained the following letter from an uncle.
Any help in tracking down further information would be greatly appreciated.

This is a wonderful link, many thanks. Could I be so bold as to ask for help on the following questions?
My grandfather Denis Byrne (1901-1940) fought in 1916 for the Citizen army. However, I can't find his name on any of the pages - are there other lists to be uploaded?
From Liberty Hall, he went to St.Stephens Green and was in the trenches till monday evening from where he moved to Littles Public house from Cuffe st gate, Leaving Littles on Thursday morning on to Jacobs where he stayed until the surrender but escaped capture. The pub is not mentioned in the lists or in the national archives website on 1916 and I cannot find anything about Littles anywhere! Is this pub called something else? I'm assuming it might be J&T Daveys, would that be right?
I have the honour of having the 1916 and 1917-1921 medals handed down to me from his son, My father John Byrne, folded in a green and gold armband with blood on it.
I obtained all these details from his Pension Application, a photocopy sent by the Department Of Defense, Pensions Administration Section, Tel 091 743700. They were fantastically helpful and I'd recommend contacting them for copies of the Pension Application which details the individual volunteers journey though the week and was completed by our ancestors, so its wonderful to see their writing.
many thanks
Denis Byrne

This is wonderful stuff, thank you so much for taking the time to put it up.
My grandfather Denis Byrne, served with the ICA during Easter week but I can't find him on any of the lists on the link. Do you think it possible his name may have been transcribed incorrectly, and entry 330 is actually Denis Byrne?
Also, do we know what the first addresses on each entry refer to?
many thanks
Denis

Hello to everyone. I'm new to all this having just discovered this page yesterday. I'm looking for any info on my grandfather William Patrick Derrington (I can't see his name on any of the lists here). I know he was a member of the 1st Battalion "D" company and fought in the Mendicity Institue during Easter Week. Apparently he was the youngest to be tried at that time on the capital charge but on account of his age was given a sentence of 2 years. He ended up in Wormwood Scrubs jail.
I have found a reference to him in a book on the History of the Sinn Fein movement (at least I presume it's him)
http://www.archive.org/stream/historyofsinnfei00joneuoft#page/436/mode/2up
If anybody can suggest where I can find any more info on him or the battalion he was with I would be very grateful. Also I don't know where he went after he was released from jail (he eventually settled in Coventry) - are there any prison records that would give me that information?
Hope someone can help.
Regards
Clare

Hi Clare,
I don't see him on the Mendicity garrision Roll of Honour. The nearest would be a Liam Derrington. Liam being
William as well and it stated that he was part of the Four Courts Garrision During easter week. I will see what else I can come up with.

Patrick

Hi Patrick.
Thank you for your prompt reply. I believe he was known as Liam as well.

Clare

I presume the William Darrington mentioned may possibly be him. Many thanks for that.
-
Hi there,
Firstly, thanks to everyone that's posted info on here. Very much appreciated.
Just wondering if anyone would have any info on my grandfather Michael Mervyn, who served with the Irish Citizen Army in 1916. Was at the Four Courts, sentenced to death but was given penal servitude. I've seen his name mentioned on a couple of threads here. Would be grateful for anything else that might turn up.
We have various 1916 clippings, etc. at home but I never got to meet him as Michael died when my dad (also Michael) was only 20.
Keep up the good work,
DM

Re: Irish Volunteers from The North Inner City, Jacobs Biscuit Factory
(Second Battalion only)
I think that this person in the listing, "br Omninghini 3 Upr Ode! St", should actually be James Cunningham of 3 Upper Oriel Street. He was the 2nd husband of my wife's great grand mother, Sarah McMahon O'Reilly, of the same address. He was born around 1870 in Drogheda and was a Tailor. According to my wife's family he served in Boland's Mill.

Hi
are the any Ridgeways other than Henry seemily 4 of them joined one was also sent to prison for a few years
thanks in advance
-
Gormongenealogy, many many thanks for the names lists as I keep referring to these in my research, however, they seem to have dropped off the link (or is it not uploading on my PC?)?
Sonoma, I have just visited Dublin and went to the National Museum to view the 1916 exhibition and look at the Roll Of Honour (on a computer only) where I found my grandfather Denis Byrne on the St.Stephens Green garrison list. But I can't seem to find a web link that has the full list so it looks like the only way to see this is visit the museum?(hopefully I can be corrected by friends on the site!).
What name are you looking for?I took a poor photo of the image on the screen and will have a look.

My understanding is that much of the gunfire from the Shebourne was aimed at the defence positions established inside Stephens Green, where trenches were dug and the entrances and surrounding roads were blocked. Some of the the surrounding buildings on the on the West and south of Stephen's Green (College of Surgeons, Little's pub etc) were also occupied by volunteers and could also have come under fire from the Shelbourne
Shane
-
My grandfather was part of St.Stephens garrison on Monday but moved to occupy 'Littles' pub in Cuffe street, (to the west of the green) from Tuesday to Thursday, but very little (sic) is known about this with a few footnotes in Charles Townsends '1916'. It may be John also occupied one of the buildings surrounding the green (possibly Littles too?) which were noted as being more favourable positions. If you have his pension there is likely to be more detail? It does look like there are other significant occupations of (minor) buildings that have received much less attention in the official histories.

Ok thanks for the reply :)

Thomas Reilly (sometimes O'Reilly) was in E Company 2nd Battalion and was involved in the raid on Jocab's biscuit factory.
-
I know that my great grandfather was involved in the 1916 Easter Rising, and so far as I know he was in Bolands Mills, but I'm not sure. His name was Leo Fitzgerald. Does anyone know where I could find information about this?
-
Hi,
He was in the Boland’s Mill garrison, his name is on the National Roll, I have put a link below to my website containing a list of those on this roll. You can apply to the Army Pensions Office in Galway if he made an application for a pension they will have a copy, if you look at The Researching Irish Medals link on my website it will give you an idea what it the pension application looks like and the type of information it contains.
http://irishmedals.org/gpage.html
-
From Joseph E.A. Connell's book "Dublin in Rebellion" the list of men in the Boland's Mill Garrison includes Leo Fitzgerald.
Apart from his name being listed, there is little further information that I can find in the book.
Under Great Brunswick St. (now Pearse St.) it reads:
"Home of Leo and Billy Fitzgerald. The family's members were prominent Volunteers in the 3rd Battalion; raided for arms in February 1916. After the Rising, Seán McMahon, Quartermaster of the IRA/Volunteers, used their house as his HQ."
Dara.
-
Thank you! Although I made a mistake, Leo Fitzgerald was my great great uncle, still family though. ;D
-
trtied irishmedals site. It is very helpful. Found my grandfather thomas o,reilly and his brother patrick listed on the jacobs biscuit factory list. I know he had some medals and am wondering if there is a list of receptients for the 1916 uprising. Many thanks.
-
The 1916 medal was issued in 1941, all surviving veterans received an unnamed medal and the next of kin of those veterans who were either killed in action during the Rising of had died between 1916 and 1941 were issued with the medal with the persons name and service number on it. There is a roll of honour signed by all surviving veterans in the museum in Collins Barracks, you can get a copy of the page with your relatives name on it but it casts about 35 or 40 Euro per page.
-
Can anyone help with finding any information on how my great great grandfather James Power was killed by a bullet during the 1916 rising.
I obtained his death cert today and now know he's interned in a grave owned by Loftus Walshe. This Loftus has not appeared before in my family search. I was informed by the nice friendly lady in Glasnevin that there are a number of other persons buried in a double plot owned by Loftus.
Was he connected with the rising and was my James Power a member of some army. At 70 years of age I doubt it.
His address was 8 Buckingham Place.
-

Most likely he was a civilian casualty. Official estimates: 254 civilians killed and over 2,200 wounded.

Hello cahail, Herbert Conroy was a member of " E " Co 2nd Batt. Dublin Brigade, he is mentioned in a W.S. made by Michael Joseph Lawless, W.S. NO.727
He was involved in an operation at 38 Upper Mount Street, 21.11.1920, to execute two British Secret Agents, which became known as " Bloody Sunday "
Some of my relatives were in the same Co. and involved in the same operation.

Hi Clare,
I've been trying to trace Liam Derrington's history too and was interested to see your post. I'm a Derrington in Dublin too, though probably not closely related as I moved here from England 15 years ago. Have you seen the record for your grandfather on the 1911 census? He's listed as living with his widower father John Joseph in Stoneybatter - see http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000092748/
I'm not surprised he's sometimes listed as Darrington as the local accent can't handle Derrington - I'm always called Darrington here too! A local historian once contacted me and asked if I was related to some Derringtons who were in Dublin (on Sundrive Road) in the 1950s. Could they have been relations of yours?
Do you know how Liam's father came to be in Dublin and whether your branch of the family had been in Ireland for generations before? His father is listed as being born in Antrim and they both spoke Irish & English - which is really intriguing as Derrington is an English name. Coincidentally, my grandfather Leslie John Derrington moved from England to Antrim in the 40s, having married my grandmother, who was from Moneyglass.
I'm sure you know that most of the Derrington family (including my grandfather) originate from the Birmingham area. My grandfather believed the name originated from the area: d'Erdington. There is still a chapel to the d'Erdington family in Birmingham today.
All the best,
Maya

Does anyone have the names list for the Irish Citizen Army? I know the thread is called that but i can't seem to find it here? I'm looking for the name Frank Moss on the list of the Irish Citizen Army, not the Volunteers though, only the Citizen Army.

Sent this photo many moons ago its the old brigade from around Ballinasloe, alas no names
New to this forum - in fact just discovered it doing a photo search for the photo you posted. I do not know if anyone will see this message.
This (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=291195.40) is the Ballinasloe [Galway] Company of the Irish Volunteers, 1914. The man seated fourth from left (and fourth from right) is my father's uncle John Thomas Greeves-O'Sullivan (1875-1924). He (and from what I understand, most of the other men in this photo) joined the British Army (Connaught Rangers) shortly after this picture was taken to fight in the Great War - heeding England's call to the Wild Geese to prove Ireland's worthiness for independence. John Thomas returned to Galway in 1919, many of those who went with him did not. He died in 1924, possibly by his own hand.
Thank you for posting this picture. It is a much higher quality (and size) than the one I currently have.

Herbert Conroy was involved in the killings on the mornings of Bloody Sunday at 38 Upper Mount Street. He fought on the state side in the civil war. He died in 1926 at age 28 from TB. Two of his brothers were also involved in Republican activities. Are you sure he was in the Citizen Army? This is news to me. I thought he was in Volunteers, then IRA and IRP.
