I've rather surprisingly and wonderfully found a link with Lavenham through one Thomas Howe who married Mary Spark in 1774. Is anyone else working on these families? The line goes back through a family called 'Gridley' too.
-
I have a William Gridley born in Gt. Waldingfield in 1691. He married a Ruth Snell in Lavenham in 1714 and had several children.
Their son Daniel from whom I'm descended, married and migrated to Glemsford.
:D

Ah - perhaps your William Gridley already had Lavenham family connections: my Gridleys were already there, and it's not a very common name. (I'm descended from an Elizabeth Gridley (b.1685), d of a Walter Gridley (1643-1702), son of Timothy Gridley (b. c.1609). All born and bred in Lavenham. :)

Hi,
I have an ABRAHAM GRIDLEY b.1721 in Great Welnetham. His daughter MARTHA GRIDLEY b.1764 in Little Welnetham married STEPHEN PADLEY. Their daughter MARY PADLEY b.1791 in Bradfield Combust married WILLIAM HOWE b.1776 in Bradfield St Clare.
William Howe is my 4 x great grandfather. Almost all of my Howe family are from Bradfield St Clare. I have to admit I don't know Suffolk at all so I'm not sure if these places are near to Lavenham.
Regards,
Julie

Thanks for your reply. Well, there could well be connections between your Gridleys and Howes and my Gridleys and Howes, since Bradfield St Clare is only 6.5 miles north of Lavenham. (I find constant reference to the multimap website an invaluable geneaological tool!) I haven't at the moment got any of the particular ones you mention, but it may be only a matter of time. Best wishes, Emma

Hello Suffolk Sue
Your Daniel Gridley was the g. grandfather of a Joseph Gridley who emigrated to Australia in 1855. That Joseph was my g.grandfather. Do you have Gridley info earlier than Daniel's parents William and Ruth?
-
Hi
All I have is William Gridley baptised29th November, 1691 in Gt. Waldingfield, the son of Thomas Gridley and Mary Gardner. Thomas and Mary married In Gt. Waldingfield ,26th October, 1680.
Ruth Snell baptised 4th March,1692 in Lavenham, the daughter of John Snell(no mother mentioned). I found the following marriage John Snell and Sara Barns married in Lavenham, 12th June, 1687. A big presumption that this is Ruths parents.
Sara Barns bap. 25th May, 1662 at Lavenham, the daughter of Philip (no mention of mother)
Sara Snell buried 30th December, 1693 in Lavenham.
I also found the following baptism in Lavenham, John Snell 16th May, 1668, the son of John (no mother), so this could possibly be the John who married Sara.
-
Hi Sue.
Many thanks for your leads. Suggest Sara Barns a real possibility by reference to IGI Batch P015801 for Lavenham. (Will use IGI dates though they differ from yours.) If John Snell married Sara on 12 June 1687 their children could be John c. 31 Jul 1687, Mary c.6 Jan 1692 and Ruth c. 4 Mar 1693. Although the batch finishes in 1708 their are no christenings to father John after Ruth. This would be consistent with Ruth's mother dying in December 1693. What do you think.?

I forgot to mention it did say Sara, wife of John Snell in the burial register.
This is one line I haven't pursued in any more detail.

Hi Sue
Do you have info on Daniel Gridley's wife's family e.g. Jarmins and Wordleys. I do have a little.
Cheers

I'm new on this site but notice family names which I am looking into.
I have Thomas Everitt & Dorcas Gridley, Daniel Gridley & Dorcas Jarmin
What I'm wondering is if anyone has info further back on the Gridley & Jarmin names, and what line our family goes back to. Thomas Gridley & Mary Seymour or Thomas Gridley & Mary Gardener?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you,
Valerie (Canada)

Hi Sue,
William Walter Gridley(1826-1916) is my 3gr grandfather who immigrated to Australia in 1855. His parents were Daniel Gridley(1801-1871) and Mary Ann Mayes(1796-?), do you know any of Williams siblings? Also a Joseph was mentioned who also immigrated to Australia in 1855, can you give me details.
Do you want all the info from William down?
Cheers Lee

Hallo Lee
Daniel Gridley was the grandson of Jarmin Gridley married to Sarah Merrills in Glemsford in 1755. Jarmin was the brother of my 4xg.grandfather John Gridley.
Siblings for William I have are. George,1828 and Mary Ann, 1831.

As well as Gridley ancestors, I also have a James PADLEY who married Elizabeth AMBROSE at Lt.Whelnetham in 1811. James b.c.1790, d.1872 at Bradfield Combust. I am also descended from the AMBROSE family of Lavenham and Acton, as well as several SMITH families in Lavenham, the SNELLs, DAKIN/DEACONs and BALDWINs at Thorpe Morieux.

My 10x Great Grandparents Timothie Greidlye=Susan Clopton wereborn in Lavenham and married there on 30 March 1600. Timothie is probably the Uncle of Richard Griedly who sailed with the Winthrop Fleet to Boston in 1630.
