I notice that James Ticehurst and his wife Elizabeth are in the 1851 census transcription for Eastbourne together with children Ann, Caroline, Charles, George and William - Do you have this information.

Hi Chris
I've got James and Elizabeth Ticehurst at Meads in Eastbourne in 1851, along with their children.
I've also got Samuel Ticehurst (widower) living at Meads, along with a Lydia Verrall (widow) and her neice Elizabeth.
From parish records I've got James Ticehurst wed Elizabeth Baulcom in 1833. Mary Baulcom was a witness.
Also Samuel Ticehurst wed a Lucy Virrell in 1833. James Ticehurst and Mary Baulcom were witnesses.
I think James and Samuel were brothers, and Elizabeth and Mary were sisters. I'm looking for info to confirm it.
As regards Samuel. He married Lucy Virrell, and they had two son Richard b1840 and William b 1843. However by 1851 he was a widower living with an also widowed housekeeper who had a very similar name to his ex-wife..................
wife Lucy Virrell -- housekeeper Lydia Verrall.
Initially I thought they were the same person, but probably not.
You can understand why I'm looking for any info on both the Baulcom girls and Lucy Virrell and Lydia Verrall.
Regards
John

Hello again Chris (something I forgot)
You found Samuel Ticehurst in Eastbourne in 1851. As I previously mailed, I had him there with a Lydia Verrall and her niece. Does this correspond with your info ?
I didn't know that he had a third son Sampson !!
What info do you have on him.
Were the three boys living with Samuel as well as Lydia and her niece ?

Hi Chris
I lost my way with all the Ticehursts long ago, but am slowly piecing it all together. Trying to find the all important links are the problem, but it does pay to re-trace steps and pick up stuff that was missed first time round.
Thanks for all the info. It will keep me busy for a while (and shut me up )

I have an Elizabeth Baulcom christened at St. Marys, Eastbourne on 05.05.1811 and a Mary christened 09.07.1815 could these be the same people? I am trying to trace the line through Richard who I thought was their brother, he was christened 30.05.1813. Parents were William and Fran.
-
I've found it difficult to find info on Elizabeth. Where did you find the christening dates ?
I think they probably are the same Elizabeth and Mary, although I have the birth date different for Elizabeth.
I had her in St. Mary's ward as well, and Mary was a younger sister.
Mary married Thomas Mewett.
Elizabeth married James Ticehurst in 1833. In 1851, they were living at Meads ( a small hamlet , part of Eastbourne) and in 1871 were at Grovelands Farm in Hailsham.
Mary was a witness at both James, and his brother Samuels weddings.
Are William and Fran Elizabeths parents or Richards ? and do you have any info regarding her husband James Ticehursts parents ?
Elizabeth an James were my GGG Grandparents, but I am at a full stop in confirming who their parents were.....
Regards
John

Hi
Please bear with me as I am only a novice and all this needs double checking. In St Marys Parish records Baptisms 1558-1837 I have found
Parents William(Lab) and FRAN
Elizabeth 05.05.1811
Mary 09.07.1815
Ric 30.07.1813
John 14.01.1810
William 31.07.1808
Jas 03.08.1817
Parents William(Lab) and FRANCES
Charles 09.05.1819
Emma 05.01.1823
George 01.04.1821
Parents William(Lab) and FANNY
Thomas 13.03.1825
I have yet to confirm that Fran,Fanny and Frances are the same person!
In the parish marriage records Elizabeth married Jas. Ticehurst 24.11.1833 by banns and Ric married Jane Mewett (witnessed by Thomas and Mary Mewett) on 25.05.1834
William Baulcom married Frances Mancer 28.02.1802.
I am afraid all this is in rough notes taken whilst at Eastbourne library as I was only looking for William Baulcom b1836c when I came across Richard in the 1841 census living with Jane, children William 5 and Frances 3. I am hoping to get across again in a few weeks to confirm and follow through on what I think I know!
If I am corrrect Richard is my GGG Grandfather.
Sorry can't help on the Ticehurst side and as I said before all this does need checking out. Hope it leads somewhere.

Hi Lel
Thanks for the mail. It has helped me unravel one part of my problem. I think I'll have to go to the records office myself to source the rest of it.
Looks like our GGG Grandparents could have been brother and sister !!
Good Luck

Hi Pauline
I've come across Mary Ann and William Verrall, but I can't link them to my 'lot' as yet. As St.Mary's Parish seems to be the centre point of a lot of my discoveries, there may yet be one.
I've also found Ann and Dennis Breach, but I don't think they are attached to my ancestors.
One thing that has thrown me on more than one occasion, is the changing surname. Verrall becomes Virrell quite often. Different references to the same people are spelt differently.
The Ticehursts and the Verralls (Virrells) were close neighbours according to some of the census during the 1800's. There seems to be a few marriages , over several generations, between these two families.
There were plenty of both names around, spread all over Sussex, and I'm finding it very difficult linking them up, but ...... I suppose thats the fun in it all.
If I can find something new I'll let you know.
Good luck

-
In addition to the family of James Ticehurst(b1779).
His brother Richard b 1786 wed a Mary Verrall (or Virrell)
in 1812.
They had a son William b1816.
The other brother Samuel b1786, died at age 1.
The sister Barbara b 1781. (Destiny unknown)
Any info on any of these would be welcome

Hi Jard,
This is the marriage for Richard. Maybe that's his sister as a witness? So you know she's around in 1810 & unmarried. No marriage for her, at least in Sussex, so she might have remained a spinster. Maybe that's his brother, James as the other witness?
Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Eastbourne, East Sussex, Date: 12 Jun 1810:
Subject: Richard TICEHURST
Spouse: Mary VIRRELL, botp (B)
Extra Information: Wit: Jas TICEHURST; Barbara TICEHURST

Hi Jane
Thanks to Chris, I'm back on the straight and narrow.
I had assumed that James Ticehurst was my GGG grandfather, and have been looking for info. on that basis.
However....I now know that his brother Richard (the one you highlighted) was my GGG grandfather.
Luckily, I haven't wasted too much effort, as it stays in the family.
Bit of luck eh !
Thanks for your help.

Is it possible Ann is also from Willingdon? Although Warbleton seems a popular area for the Lades family. I can't however find Ann anywere on the Lades of Warbleton Sussex pedigree so will be interesting to see who her father and maybe grandfather were.
-
Elizabeth and Mary Baulcomb were the daughters of William Baulcomb and Frances Manser who married 28 Feb. 1808 in St. Mary's Eastbourne.
Mary married Thomas Collins Mewett 2 Feb. 1834 also in St. Mary's.

Found a typing mistake Edwin Ticehurst baptised 8 Jun 1812 at Lewes died 27 Oct 1899 New Zealand not 1829 aged 17.
-
Found ANNE LADES wife of Edward Stretton she was baptised at St John the Baptist Barham, Kent, England not Sussex in 7 Mar 1746 daughter of James Lade. She then seems to have found her way to Warbleton Sussex as did many of the Lades family. James Lade died 4 May 1768 at Barham Kent.
-
William Stretton Ticehurst didn't marry Mary Verrrell he died age 19 in 17 Jun 1835.
-
Anne Lade baptised 1746 Barham Kent youngest daughter of James Lade and Elizabeth Dadd. Rest of Anne's siblings were baptised at Blean Kent except the oldest Mary baptised at Herne Kent, all died Warbleton Sussex. Incorrect death date for James Lade previous page should be 24 Jun 1782 Warbleton Sussex not Kent
