Title: Portland Prison, Dorset convict information?
Post by: cathyvall on Wednesday 19 March 08 06:33 GMT (UK)
My Great Grandfather, Alfred Grantham, was a prisoner in the Portland Prison Dorset per the 1881 Census.

Is there anywhere I can write or call to get more details about why he was there (what he was convicted of) and how long he was there?

Thanks.

Cathy

Sylvia:

Thank you very much for the information.  It always astounds me what is available.  I'm not sure they will have the information since Alfred was in the prison in 1881 (their records seem to end much before that), but I will e-mail them to find out.  However, I may be able to use their military information for another ancestor.

Again, thank you.
