Title: Searching for McDonalds
Post by: TunjiLees on Sunday 23 March 08 15:07 GMT (UK)
Hello,

I am searching for a McDonald family from Cleish and hope someone might be able to help, because as it is I am at a brick wall.

My ancestor Mat(t)hew McDonald married a May/Marjory Lamb 29 Nov 1832 Newtyle, Angus.

From this marriage record and the baptism of their children, I know him to be a native of the parish of Cleish.
The only Mathew McDonald ever born in Kinross according to the IGI was in 1789 Cleish, however this would make him 18 years older than Marjory, which seems unlikely.
He seems to have died between 1839 and early 1841: he is not on the 1841 census, and his last child David Anderson McDonald was born in 1840. (could the Anderson middle name be a clue?)

I hope someone can help,

Kind regards,

-Tunji

Why do you feel it was unlikely?  He may have been married previously

It may be worthwhile looking up the full 1832 marriage record to see if he was a widower

Or - a copy of his death entry to check his age when he died

Hi Carole,

I had checked the full marriage record but all it said was 'Mathew McDonald native of Cleish and May Lamb in this parish'

There is no death entry because he died pre-1855 and there are no OPR deaths for that period in the parish of Newtyle.

Hi Tunji  :)

Scotland's People only have the 1789 baptism in Cleish 1789-1816. It could be a second marriage. I'll have a look.

No other marriage in C of Scotland - it could be by acclamation, etc. but maybe he just didn't marry until later.

What were the children's names in birth order?

Hi Gadget,

Thanks for doing some searching into my family.

MATTHEW MCDONALD & MARJORY LAMB
The children in order of birth.
1) HELEN LAMB MCDONALD
2) JAMES MCDONALD
3) JOHN MCDONALD
4) DAVID ANDERSON MCDONALD

This doesn't seem to match up with the parent names' of the Matthew born 1789...

I've got JohnMcDonald and Janet Rutherford for them. Do you have May Lamb's parents? The naming conventions weren't always followed in the usual order. I have female line grandfathers named first in my lines.

May/Marjory's parents were JOHN LAMB & HELEN SEYDIE.

That's not too good then - so it should be a James - just thinking that he was a native of Cleish in 1832 but could have been born elsewhere. Have you checked for any Matthews - son of James in the nearby Parishes ?

Hi,

I just checked and there is only one IGI Extracted record in Scotland for a Mathew McDonald born within 20 years of 1800, and that is the one born in Cleish.

Even though he was much older, this Mathew does now seem likely to be my ancestor, though I don't see how I can know for sure.

Only other showing on SP is:

Dalkeith, ML - 13 Mar 1800 - Alexander Mathew. Parents Alexander McDonald and Elisabeth Smith

This seems far less likely.

It's virtually impossible to be 100% that the Cleish one is him. The only way is to try to find another one who either died or married which could be him.

Also, try finding any other children of John McDonald and Janet Rutherfield.

Good Luck
