Title: Fountain Dale near Blidworth
Post by: cybrgran on Friday 14 January 05 15:54 GMT (UK)
In 1881 my G grandmother worked at the above house. She was a Cook/Servant to Lt Col Sir Arthur Need.

Could anyone tell me how I could get a photograph of this house? Would it be in any books about Nottinghamshire.?
Does anyone know if it is still standing?.

Any help and advice appreciated.

Hi, It is strongly associated with Robin Hood and if you google "fountain dale"  (include the quotes) and you will have lots of information on Fountain Dale but i couldn't see any pictures, You maybe will have more luck.
If you go to this website

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/

And search for Fountain Dale or Reid you will find info like this which is taken from White's Directory of Nottinghamshire 1853

"Bottoms and Fishpool are hamlets which form part of the village. Rainworth is a small hamlet, two miles from the village on the Southwell road. Fountain Dale, the handsome mansion of Mrs Anne Need, is distant 1½ miles north of Blidworth, near the romantic scenery of Thieves Wood and Harlow Wood. Blidworth Hall, 1½ miles south-west of the village, is the beautiful residence of Jonathan Hardcastle Esq."

I have a picture of fountaindale house and grounds - it is from a book called "blidworth in old picture postcards" put together by a local blidworth resident called Will Richards in 1986.
This is the caption to the picture:
"An aerial view of fountaindale as it looked about 1925. For many years the house was owned and occupied by Mr and Mrs Tom Shipside, and the surrounding well-kept grounds were well-known to local people because garden parties for deserving causes were often held there. Beyond the house the Fish Lake can be seen- one of the three lakes in the grounds fed by Rainworth Water near its source. Beyond, the lake part of The Moat can be seen, and Friar Tuck is said to have lived on the grounds enclosed by The Moat. Friar Tuck's well is just downstream of the lowest of the three lakes.
In the top left-hand corner of the picture is the old coach road which lran from Black scotch lane(the scottish drovers' road) into the courtyard at the back of the house.
The coach-road on the left went to the ornamental gates near Bessie sheppard's stone. During the 1926 strike, schoolchildren walked from blidworth to be entertained to tea on the circular lawn"
Will Richards is active in the local blidworth community so you may be able to find a contact for him to see if he has further information.
I hope the information is of some use, Caz,
p.s. i live in rainworth which is close to fountain dale and i believe the house to still be standing but i will try to verify this. :)

Dear Caz
Thank you so much for all that information. Someone else very kindly sent me a photograph of the house in the 1960's whenit was for sale. I have been told that it is now converted into three apartments.
Would it be possible for you to email me a scan of the photograph?. Also is the book still in print?

Would still like to know if the book is still available. If you could let me have the ISBN number I might be able to borrow it from the library.

My gggg grandfather was Samuel Need, of Fountain Dale, father of Sir Arthur. Our family story, which I have been able to verify to a large extent, is as follows:

"Lieutenant General Sir Samuel Need, while on duty in India in the18th century, married a Maharaja’s daughter and had three children—John, Walter and a daughter who later became Lady Crewe. The princess died and Sir Samuel went back to England and remarried, but the sons were not accepted by English society and were disinherited. The younger son Walter returned to India.

John changed his name to Johnstone and married Mrs. Ann Easton before migrating to Tasmania, where they settled in Richmond, north of Hobart. They had six boys—John, Walter Easton, Alf, Robert, and William and one daughter, Annie. Following the death of his wife, John Johnstone returned to England with Annie and his four oldest boys, leaving the two youngest children in care of an ex-convict. While in England, John married Ann’s sister and returned to Tasmania, leaving Annie with his sister, Lady Crewe. The four boys returned to Tasmania after each finished his schooling.

Easton, who was to be called Charlie by his friends, went on to become a surveyor and, at the age of 21, arrived in the Western District of Victoria where he became an authorized government surveyor. After marrying Eliza Prigg, they settled on their property “Woodrow Vale” in Colac."

Easton Johnstone was my gg grandfather. It appears Samuel Need had three sons later in life, Henry, Arthur, and Charles.

Any information about John Johnstone, Ann Easton, and Lady Crewe would be much appreciated.

OzKen  :)

There is a John Johnstone on the 1901 England census, born in India about 1869 living in Liverpool.
Ring any bells?

Are you still looking for information on the house itself?

My grandparents (Ralph and Belle Cooke) bought the house in the mid-1960s, and lived there until they had to move in 1995, due to my grandfather's illness.

I have very fond memories of the house and surroundings, having spent many, many wonderful months there as a child.

I only came across this site through a search for "fountaindale", being interested in finding out what had happened to the house since I saw it last.

Last thing I knew, the main house was still one, but there were a couple of flats around the back. I don't know how much of this the new owners have changed.

Hi,

I see in the 1891 Census a James and Alice Need were living in Fountain Dale, my GG grandmother and her sister were working for the couple, I wondered how they fitted into your family, my GG grandfather was a groom working in Ault Hucknall nearby.

My GG grandmother was Ellen Louisa Hall and her sister was Mary Ann Hall, both of them worked at Fountaindale, strangely their mother was Eliza Ann Smith, but she was born in Norton in 1848. I wonder if she's related to your Eliza Ann, I was interested in their employer James Need, did you find any other photos of the place?

Hi all,from OzBrianJC .
For Oz Ken.
My wife Christine is a direct descendant of John Johnstone (Need) who immigrated to Tasmania around 1837.   Her lived in Hobart and Richmond until 1859.   He then moved to Victoria and lived on the eastern bank of Tower Hill near Warrnambool.

You have answered a our questions as to why he changed his name.   He had 7 children in Tasmania by Annie Easton.   He married Elisabeth Easton B1857, M1874, D1857.  She was Annie's sister.   No children.   He married Mary Smith, M1876 3 children.   Annie is buried in Richmond, Tas, she died giving birth to Alfred Isaac B1849 D1910. Christine gg grandfather.   Your gg grandfather Easton surveyed Natimuk, in Western Victoria.   A sign making note of it is displayed in the town park.

Hope to catch up with you in the future.   We would a lot to talk about.   We live in Dandenong Nth, Melb

Hi, I am coming into this discussion a bit late and I hope the original people still visit. It fascinated me, as i remember staying at Fountain Dale as a small child of maybe eight or nine.(around 1949) My Grandfather was a Methodist minister (Wilmot Carvosso Carlyon) and he and my grandma were friendly with the Shipsides family who owned the house then. I think he had once been the minister of their local chapel. My grandparents were house sitting for the Shipsides and I was invited to stay.
It was such a grand house! I remember the bedrooms all called after their colour schemes. I had the Peach bedroom. There were so many rooms, even one for the arranging of flowers. It was amazing to me as a child. What is also in my memory is a room with bars at the windows where they said Robin Hood had been kept prisoner for a while. The most impressive thing was that Mr Shipsides put a whole pound note in the collection bag!I think they owned a big Car Company. I do know he had his own plane and had flown my grandparents to Switzerland. Wow! Such wealth! If I think of any more details I will be back.

Welcome Ren
There used to be a large motor garage in Newark called Shipsides,On the corner of Lombard street where it meets Castle Gate, wonder if it was the same man?
It appears Sir Walter Scott wrote part of Ivanhoe at Fountain Dale, be exciting to wonder if he stayed in the Peach Room. It was Mr Tom Shipside, there is a snippet in the newspaper from 26th Jan 1937 saying he will be returning to Fountain Dale after touring Egypt and Palestine.
LOVE the name of your grandfather........  ;D

. Yes I am very proud to be Cornish and of course the name betrays our roots. My Granddad was born in Mylor near Falmouth. I am hoping to trace his sister Mabel as I never met her and don't know if she had" issue" as they say! Looks as though this might be the place to find out.
Thanks so much for making my first visit here so pleasant.

I am writing you this post sitting in a beautiful four poster bed that came from Fountaindale which is a privately owned home on Little Ricket Lane nr Blidworth. It is very near the well where Friar Tuck lived, and Will Scarlett is buried in the Church Yard there. I lived in a very old line of cottages called Rock Terrace nearby. I knew the couple who lived at fountaindale until perhaps 15-20 years ago Mr & Mrs Cooke (I think there was an "E" on the end of cook, Bella & Ralp. They sold the bed to my friend when they moved to Birkenstead and when she moved I had it. The house was up for sale very recently and you should be able to see it on Rightmove. The water nearby was known as "Fowl Evil" and was rumoured to appear every 7 years. It is a lovely home with flag stone floors and private gardens. Now you have the address you can contact them. Jane

I’m coming to this chat very, very late but I’ve only just found it! I’m a Shipside, it was my maiden name and although I know very little about our family history, I am trying to find out more. Tom Shipside was my parents best man at their wedding and I know my father (Harold Shipside) was very close to him. They stayed at Fountaindale on many occasions and so did my Uncle (Phil Shipside) and Aunt. The garages you refer to in Nottingham and Newark were all the same family and the family also had lots of smaller filling stations in and around the Nottinghamshire area. I’d love to know more about the house, I was told that there was also a connection to Lambley Hall and family connections to Oxton village. My sister and I are using the Corona virus lock down to try and piece all the information together and find out more about our family. Any information would be very welcome. Vikki

Dec 1918 Harold Shipside mothers maiden name Mosley.

Bertie Whitby Shipside birth reg.Mar 1885 7b/408 Nottingham. No mothers maiden name, which indicates he was illegitimate. You would need his birth certificate to find his mother. I cannot see a baptism for him. Hope this helps.

My father, known as Bob Goldsmith, moved to Arnold in 1939 ao become "Service Manager" of T Shipside Ltd. in Lower Parliament Street. He stayed in that position until 12961 when the Shipside family sold the business to Rank-Locomotors.
My father had an excellent relationship with all the family: Shipsides, Hopkins and Adams, who lived around Oxton, and Calverton. I also have brief but wonderful memories of going to Fountain Dale and I seem to remember sitting in an old plane that Tom Shipside owned in a nearby (air)field.
The Shipside family were kind enough to purchase a house in Wollaton for which my parents were charged a small rent but when the business was sold in 1961, they gave my parents the house FOC. My sister still live there.
I have a copy of "I Lived in a Village" and recognise all in the photo in it despite the passing years.
I also have some photos of the building and petrol station next door, together witht the bill of sale for my parents' first car, a Wolseley 10 reg. EVO 721, purchased for £140/-/- from Shipsides.
