Hi NorrieG,
I only have hand scribbled notes passed down to me from a distant aged relative who thinks she has a photographic memory. Unfortunately nothing seems to be what it should be to date.
I quote now;
Robert Young born 1811 Scotland died in 1870 in Sydney, Australia
Robert's father Charles and Inn keeper in Fife, married a Penelope Pousty middle of 1798. I now have a Penelope Pousty born 23/6/1779. Charles is supposed to be born in 1775 father William Young and Janet Young in Cupar. That is all I know. I am about to add this to my post as an update.

Hello, I am trying to discover the parents of Alexander Geddes born 1834 in Scotland and died 1896 in Philadelphia. He was married to Sarah ?? and had a son Charles A. who was my Dad's grandfather. I believe that Alexander's Dad may have been named Charles since he named his son Charles A. I have found a Charles Geddes married to Margaret Brown from Fife Scotland and that they had a son named Alexander. Can anyone provide me more info on Charles and Margaret's children? The Alexander Geddes in my family line that moved to Philadelphia was a plumber by trade. Any info on Charles A. and Margaret Brown is appreciated so that I may link them to my heritage.

Thank you for your reply.
I researched this information on familysearch.org and there was a listing for Scotland Births & Baptisms between 1564-1950 on Alexander Geddes born on 28 August 1834 and christened on 21 September 1984 at Cupar, Fife, Scotland with fathers name Charles Geddes and mothers name Margaret Brown. Indexing Project (batch) number C11420-7, System Origin Scotland-VR, Source Film Number 1040101, Reference Number 2:15C12GV
Does the birth date of 28 August 1834 and christening date of 21 September 1984 come up on any other listing?
Thank you,
Bernadette

If you google Clunie churchyard you will an address in

Hi Norrie
I believe Jane is correct. I was moving onto her first husband John Duff. I figured since you were so helpful with Jane you may know about Cothill Clunie or how I can get the correct information. I have a death record for John Duff and it states 26Jun1875 Cothill, Clunie Perth. Am I wrong to assume Clunie churchyard? I am stuck with him as I cannot find birth information anywhere. I am hoping the MI may help me if there is one :)
Thanks so much!

Hi Sue as you have the death certificate who was his parents.?
Cothill was a farm Clunie, Google Cothill for a map.
have you checked the 1871 Census?
you said on roots web
I’am looking for any information about John Duff he was born 1844 in Scotland, and died June 29, 1875 in Cothill, Clunie, Perth, Scotland. He was married to Jane Grewar on December 17, 1869 in Inverharrity, Glenisla, Angus, Scotland,
IGI gives
Father: John Duff, Mother: Jane Grewar
1. ELIZABETH DUFF - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 01 SEP 1873 Glenisla, Angus, Scotland
2. PETER DUFF - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 25 APR 1870 Glenisla, Angus, Scotland
3. MARJORY DUFF - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 09 FEB 1872 Glenisla, Angus, Scotland
it also has a John Duff born 11.2.1844 to James Duff & Agnes Osler

Hi Norrie
We believe John who was married to Jane Grewar has parents Peter Duff and Elizabeth McKay. I cannot find any info about the birth of John aside from the location in the census and death records.
I do have the 1971 census. It has John with Jane and son Peter with John listed as ag laborer. It has him living at 5 Craig and confirms his birth in Coupar Angus. I assume Craig is the farm lived and worked on. I am unable to find any birth for John or marriage record for Peter and Elizabeth McKay. Peters death record has him married to Elizabeth McIvers.
Any ideas? ;)

Hi Norrie,
Thanks so much for looking for me. I'm new on this rootschat and finding everyone so helpful :)
My HAGGARTY interest stems from the following:
Janet YOUNG (b. 26/03/1780 Cupar, Fife d. 1864) md Charles HAGGARTY 07/12/1802 Edinburgh.
On the marriage entry it says Charles was in the Royal Navy. There was some later paperwork that indicated he was in the Merchant Navy so not quite sure. From what the family knows they went to Belfast, Ireland where their son Andrew HAGGARTY was born 01/10/1804. His birth shows up in the Cupar parish records but I think he was born in Ireland.
From what we then know Charles must have died - perhaps in the Napoleonic wars of the time and we think Janet remarried as the son Andrew became known as Andrew Haggarty GILLESPIE. We've been unable to find Charles or the GILLESPIE marriage so we're not 100% on all this but Ireland does seem the most likely place Charles was originally from.
I just keep looking for Haggarty's in hope that someone stumbles across the right one.

Hi Norrie. The gravestone must have originally been upright if there is an inscription on the other side as well. You wouldn't by any chance have a photo of the other side would you ? I don't really expect so, but just thought I would ask.
Thanks for this, much appreciated.

Norrie,
Thanks for the early reply and photo. This will fill in a blank for us.
We are having some problems with the early spelling of family names .e.g., Lonie and Mair in lieu of Loney and More.
But that is part of the fun in tracing our family history.

Thank you again.I have the 1881 census details for Tyndals Wynd, who are my direct ancestors. I have been using Scotlands People, so will now try Free Cen where I can. Not sure how I missed Free Cen as I have been using Free BDM but for English/Welsh ancestry. I will have to see where the other McLeans take me.

Hi Norrie
I looked on your list for an MI for my ancestor Rev Dr James Cochrane but he doesn't seem to be there. He was the Minister there from 1841 to his death in 1877.
There is a stone and a window for him and his 2 sons - they must be inside the church:
stone 232: Rev Dr Cochrane minister first charge here, son Henry John 14/4/1850. (perhaps this was instead of a MI?)
233 (window) James Church Cochrane of Bengal Civil service died Azamgarh 4/2/1874.
Any chance of a photo of these? I would love to see one, or anything about Rev James Cochrane in the church records. I'm trying to find out more about him but can't find a date of birth to go back any further.

Hi Kirsty
I thought you might be interested in the entry under the heading of Cupar Presbytery for James in the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae the succession of ministers in the Church of Scotland Hew Scott D.D., Vol 5, Synods of Fife, and of Angus and Mearns. Oliver & Boyd Edinburgh: Tweeddale Court 1925
"JAMES COCHRANE, M.A.: pres. by Queen Victoria 5th Feb., and ord. 13th May 1842; trans. to First Charge 18th Aug. 1843."
pres. = presented
ord. = ordained
Not a lot, I appreciate, but somethiing different nevertheless.

Hi Tom yes there is a stone for Kirkcaldy in Ceres
but wrong spelling KIRKCALDY
Thomas Kirkcaldy died 1959 age 78 & Christina McLEAN died 1939 age 58
I see in 1881 census Edinburgh a Thomas KIRKALDIE born 1854 Cupar
and his wife Janet? born 1853 Burntisland
who were his parents?, did they always spell Kirkaldie that way.

thanks Norrie , none of these dates match up with mine , there are a few different spellings even in the same families ,often the mistake of registars who just wrote it down as it sounded and was never corrected , i will need to do a bit more research , i believe there are a few in Kilmany churchyard but without stones .
thanks tom .

Hello Norrie , sorry my dates were wrong , the thomas you mention in the edinburgh cesus is the son of the thomas who i believe is buried in cupar , the census confirms he belonged to cupar , i am fairly sure he would have a stone as they were quite well of , what other cems are in the cupar area ?
regards tom .

Norrie,
I have just found this thread ,and wondered if you had any information on a Robert Robertson b about 1760 and his wife Clementina Stuart b about 1760 , They had five children I believe , Jane 1789,Agnes 1791, Robert 1793, Elizabeth 1794, and William 1796. Robert senior was a jeweller in Cupar. If you had a photo of their gravestone I would be very grateful . I think the cemetery is near `wynds`?
much obliged

Cupar Cemetery is in the middle of Fife,
Who was Elizabeth Oglivie married to?

Oh. Sorry! Elizabeth was married in Dundee in 1875 to Alexander INNES from Banffshire. He died in Canada in 1890. Elizabeth was born in Dundee, the daughter of John OGILVY and Elizabeth BRUCE, in 1843. She died in Balmerino in 1922.

Firstly, apologies - for some reason I didn't get an alert about responses to this thread, and have been by for a while, so have only just seen your replies. Thank you both very much for looking up Rev Cochrane for me - that's really helpful and you have filled in some gaps for me.

Hello Everyone. Sorry if I am in the wrong topic but my search led me to one of the middle pages.
I am researching my dad's side of the family and I have gotten stuck at only my Great Grandfather. Unfortunately no other family exists to give me any info so I am looking for some here.
My dad, George Donald Brown b. 7 Sep 1929 Cupar d. 27 Mar 1994 Kirkcaldy
His dad: George Brown b. 1900 Cupar d.1963 Cupar. Married to Kate MacCorquodale
His dad: George Brown b 1861 Dunbog Married to Helen S Turpie Parents to George & Helen A Brown.
If anyone can provide information on either the Browns or the Turpies I would be most grateful
The 'next dad', my Great, Great Grandad may also have been a George and he may have married one Helen Black!
Thank you
Mike Brown

Hi Mike welcome to Fife Roots Chat I have checked my headstone index but cannot see stones for the above. In the presently in use Cupar Cemetery in the index of the Scottish Monumental
Inscriptions for that Cemetery it lists a MacCorquodale this could be the above Kate
you can purchase their Cd for £12

Hi, Norrie
I couldn't find a direct thread for Ceres gravestones so I thought I'd ask you directly if you've any photos or records for Ceres.
I've a relative who was married to John Howie of Ceres. Her name is Jean Dobie or Durie. The Dobie is not traceable so I think it may be Durie.
However, there is a MI inscription, I assume for Ceres, which reads something like Jean DOBIE Alias HOWI:(e) of Ceres. Died: Aug 1799 Aged: 82 Widow of Jean (John) Howie. Year tentative Mitchel Monumental Inscriptions - according to the FFHS disk. On looking at it I can see that, if the stone were old and weathered, the top of the O if missing could be a U, and the B could be an R.
Hi Jim sorry nothing for John HOWIE & Jean DOBIE but there are 2 headstones
in Ceres Cemetery, could they be connected ?
45 Oliver HOWIE Builder died 11.11.1863 age 75
children Margaret & Agnes died in infancy
Jane Howie died 14.8.1844 age 17
Oliver Howie died 7.11.1859
William Howie died 1866
George died 1887?
Robert died 28.6.1887
Elizabeth died 1861
wife Agnes Clark died 1877
46 Erected by George HOWIE in memory of his wife
Agnes YOUNGER died 9.11.1829 age 38?
son George died 25.5.1827 age 1 month
Margaret PETRIE his mother died 9.9.1833? age 70?
his brother James HOWIE died 24.9.1845 age 38
his father John HOWIE died 4.5.1845 age 58?
above George HOWIE who departed this life 28.3.1861 age 79

Hello, Norrie
Thanks for the photos. I have the Oliver Howie / Agnes Clark family on one of my branches. Oliver was a grandson of John Howy and Jean Durie/ Dobie whom I'm trying to sort out.
Just for the record, their son George died 03 Jan 1867 at Ceres and daughter Elizabeth died 02 Dec 1868. As far as I can tell there were ten children. The dates on the stone were useful, thanks.
As for George Howie and Agnes Younger, and George's parents John H and Margaret Petrie, I've stumbled across them a few times but haven't been able to link them with my tree. There appear to be twelve children of John and Margaret.
Given the large number of Howies from Ceres, I'm surprised that there are only two Howie headstones.
I'm grateful to you
Jim

Hi Norrie
If you ever come across a gravestone in Cupar Churchyard for James Cochrane, 1805-1877, I'd love to see a photo. There's a plaque for him inside the church, and 2 windows for his sons, which I have seen and photographed. He was the minister at Cupar (1st charge) from 1842-77 and the current minister says he is buried in the churchyard somewhere. I spent a couple of hours looking at the gravestones there last year but couldn't find it, and the minister wasn't sure where it was.
best wishes
Kirsty

James Cochrane, 1805-1877 ... was the minister at Cupar (1st charge) from 1842-77
Hi "kirstyc"
I'm not connected, but the attached image is from Rev James Cochrane's entry in the Fasti Ecclesiæ Scoticanæ, New Edition, Volume VII: Synods of Fife and of Angus and Mearns, The succession of Scottish Ministers in the Church of Scotland from the Reformation, by the Rev. Hew Scott, D.D.

Hi "fifer"
I though you might be interested in the Funeral Notice for who I think may be your James from "The Argus" Melbourne, Victoria : Monday 12 September 1881:
"THE Friends of the late Mr. JAMES THOMSON, stonemason, many years hall-keeper, Fitzroy-Town-hall, are respectfully invited to follow his remains to their last resting place, in the Melbourne General Cemetery.
The funeral procession will move from his late residence, Fitzroy Town hall, THIS DAY (Monday, the
12th inst.), at a quarter to 2 o'clock precisely."
There isn't a Death notice, but this is sometimes the case in the Australian papers ::)
Cheers

Been researching my Family for past couple of years and traced them to Cupar/Kemback area. Due to health and now disability am restricted in travel. Therefore am asking if anyone can help and has information on Wilson's of Fife.
I live in Dunbar and was taken for a very short visit to Cupar church where I took pictures of (18) James Wilson & Jane Scott, & (18) Thomas Wilson & Mary Ann Robertson's headstones, but they don't seem to be link to my branch.
My family are
(1) David Wilson (b.abt1691) m.1716 Catharine Rodger (b.abt1695)
(2) David Wilson (b.1719 Ceres) m.1737 Jannet Peatie (b.1718 Leuchars)
(3) John Wilson (b.1745 Ceres d.1812 Kemback) m.1768 Agnes Gibson (b.abt1747 d.abt1824)
(4) John Wilson (b.1780 Kemback d.bfr 1861) m.? Jean Cunningham (b.abt 1792 Kemback d.aft11861)
(5) John Wilson (b.1821 Kemback d.1878 Inveresk, Musselburgh) m.1847 Cupar, Janet Ness (b1825 St Andrews d.aft1891 England)
I have much, much more information to share with those interested. Because the family lives and work in and around Cupar/Kemback I suspect they may have been interred there.
My e-mail address is gavin1wilson@btinternet.com
