Has anyone an interest in the surname of CREARY,
Joseph born Addington 1822, wife named Jessie/Janet, no marriage found to date therefore no maiden name, lived from 1851 in Kendal

Hi Louisa Maud
The only entry that I can see in 1841 that looks remotely like them has been indexed as Joseph Crewdson, though for me the ending could be anything.
It's Joseph Cree???? a farm labourer, at High Barrow/Brow Farm, Hincaster, aged 20,
c/o Joseph Rooke? /Rocks or similar (65)
Joiseph ,, 30/38?
Jane ,, 40 and family with other workers including Mary Talbot aged 20.
HO 1159 13.
Not that far from Kendal, near Milnthorpe.
Good luck.

Thanks Emms
I will have a look at Ancestry, I expect it will be him, the age is near enough for the 1841, if only I could find a marrige between them
Happy hunting

HI Again Louisa Maud
I saw this marriage earlier and discounted it. Now I've looked at the 1851 and realised that Jane/Jessy was born in Liverpool, it's a real possibility.
On Free bmd there' s a marriage in theJune quarter 1848 for a Joseph Crewdson to a group which includes Jane Morris. (the only Jane/ Janet/ Jessy)
In fact, in Liverpool, because of the shipping, there would be people from all ove. Living near the border with Scotland, I associate Jessy for Janet or Jane with Scottland - maybe Ireland too? Not sure, but certainly some areas of either could make Crewdson and creasy sound very similar.
I think it's worth a go when you've been looking so long. Probably a certificate unless you're lucky with a transcript?
You could put a post on the Lancashire board as well?
I hope you manage to find out more.
Best wishes
Emms
-
Thanks Emms
Looks like a possibility, on most all census her name is spelt differently, other details remain the same , I am sure she is the same person, her death shows Jennet in 1899 Kendal, IGI shows her as Jessy, confusing though isn't it?.
I thank you for your impute, you have put me in the right direction, I am helping a friend out with this one so I will have to ask her if she wants to buy a cert, I hope she does
regards
LM
-
Hi
I hope she likes it, but just a thought, I wonder what we can get off Lancashire bmd to save her?
Emms
-
Hi
Sorry, no luck.
Emms
-
After ages of searching for this I might well have come a step nearer with a possibilty, it might have been wrongly transcribed
Joseph CRESEY marrying Jenet LOW
Ulverston reg dist 1845 June qtr
If it were possible can I ask for a marriage look up at the local records office for this, a huge ask
poss 1841
Jenet Low born Scotland aged 19, fits living DRIFFIELD, on later census she states she was born in Liverpool
Joseph was born in Aldington 1822, I have not got a clue as to where this couple might have married except they were living in Westmoreland 1848 and the following years.
I hope I have sussed this out after what feels like years of searching

Have you looked at the Creary family from Dalton in Furness ,not that far from Kendal,
Joseph and Ann are having children in the late 1700s,
-
Janet Low father James,
Joseph Ceary father John,
married Ulverston Parish church,Lancashire ,now Cumbria,
10Th of May 1845,
Merry Christmas Gillian
-
You have made my day, HUGE thank you I think you have solved my puzzle after all this time, it was worth resurrecting
Happy Christmas
Louisa Maud
-
It was Louisa ,my friend is actualy married to a Creary, here in Dalton the name is spelt in two ways ,Crairy/Creary,Low is still in Ulverston,
Gillian
-
OOOOH, that is interesting, is she connected in some way to Joseph?
Found a Jenet Low on 1841 aged 19 living Driffield, shows she was born in Scotland, I did wonder if her maiden name was Morton as some of her children had it as a middle name, but I do now believe it was Low.
LM
-
I have found Joseph aged 15 living at Cornishead Priory Ulverston, as M. S whatever that isunfortunately no parents, I have yet to find his birth or baptism, I know his father was John from the marriage you gave me
Louisa Maud
-

Hi Gillian
It is Christmas morning and my grandaughter has given me an early morning call, so I am up bright and breezy before the bird goes in the oven.
Family search IGI has lots on their site and possibly I can go back further, but I have to leave it till after today and the family have departed
Many thanks
Happy Christmas
LM
-
Just of to work ,but I thought I would mention this you said you had him in a census born Addington, could this be Aldingham, this is on the Road to Conishead Priory and is a Parish covering this area ,I will try and check out the marriage details for you after the holidays,
Gillian
-
Thank you Gillian, have a nice day
LM
-
Louisa,
the 1861 census has the family in Ambleside,Josephs birth place is given as Aldingham, and he is a coachman Janets is Liverpool so you are looking at the correct family,
Gillian
-
Thanks Gillian, I have traced them, I think all the way through to the present but I do suspect some have been lost along the way due to miss transcription of spelling, if only I could get to the area where thee records are kept I am sure I could trace them through church records as they seemed to have stayed in a round about area
Some census Janet is shown as Jessy which completely threw me
Creary is not a common surname
LM
-
Hello again, you say Creary isn't a common name ,well it is to Furness,so I shall look them up for you ,if you private message me your email,I will ask for help at our family history society, then if anyone there has any information they can contact you ,but it would be February's meeting,Dalton is only small in comparison to most towns and the records should be in Barrow in Furness ,the Ambleside ones for the children will be in Kendal,so if you are thinking of coming ,take a holiday in the Lakes,
Best wishes Gillian

What is Hannah's rough birth date please,
there is a few William Rawcliff records but I cant connect to the date you have given,
Joseph and Ann in 1861 census have an 8 year old daughter Hannah, living Ulverston,
-
Hi, Thanks for reply. Hannah died 4 feb 1851 aged 42 yrs and is buried with her husband and 2 children in Ulverston churchyard close to the east window. As of Jan 2011 the gravestone is in good order regards

Thanks,
thats why I cant find them in any census together,I will be at St Marys Thursday morning ,
Rawcliffe and Rockcliffe are Aldingham names as well as Ulverston,
if you want to start a new posting for them post it in Lancashire,

-
Hello ,
William Rawcliffe captain of the Schooner The Richard Roper,
died 17Th of August 1868,late of Ulverston,
Among one of his crew lists is William Seatle Rawcliff aged 21,
baptised ,Ulverston 1830 son of Henry and Jane ,so I shall for now assume he is a nephew,
Henry born Ulverston 1841 to William and Hannah is his eldest son,he was reported washed overboard out of Liverpool 1867 ,reported in the Ulverston Mirror,Feb 1867,from the schooner James and Agness,
Hannah born 1849 Ulverston, according to the IGI,daughter of William and Hannah,
William,
Henry ,
John Rawcliffe are all listed as sea captains in Ulverston,in the book Furness folk and facts between 1850 and 1890,by the author William White published in 1930,sadly there are no further details,
Am I looking at the correct family please,
-
Yes These are the Rawcliff's ..William was captain of the "Hannah" for years until he got command of "the Richard Roper" am related to his son,Joseph, born 1844 ulverston died Fleetwood 1884 master of the john Lightfoot wrecked off Cette southern France nov1874
william's father also william
Wm and Hannah also had a daughter Elizabeth died 29 dec 1857 aged 7yr Henry mentioned on gravestone died 4 jan 1867 aged 25 yrs
I don't know yet if they had any more children will need to research in Barrow RO
cheers

Emms
-
Thank you,
I can see the marriage for Hannah and it does state her dad is Joseph Creary and Williams is William Rawcliff ,but for the life of me I cant pin them down exactly to their births, free bmd has marriage as Rockcliff
I was at a talk the other night on Ulverston canal which did help me research further especialy on the shipping side,
Gillian
-
Can any one find William and Hannah in 1841 census, please I cant ,

-
www.mightyseas.co.uk is a good site for furness shipping
I'll see what extra info is on the certs when they arrive I haven't found Wm and Hannah in 1841 either .Wm may have been at sea Hannah with her parents/parents in law ???
William's parents may be william rawcliff and Deborah Fisher married 1805
thanks
-
Don't worry, I just need to find one more clue and then it will all fit together,I never give up.I do have a couple of Josephs in mind, but not a Hannah,That is a good possibility for Williams parents even though I haven't found his baptism.

Has anyone an interest in the surname of CREARY,
Joseph born Addington 1822, wife named Jessie/Janet, no marriage found to date therefore no maiden name, lived from 1851 in Kendal
regards
Louisa Maud
Yes! The Joseph Creary you refer to is my great great great grandfather. His son, Alexander Morton Creary (b. 20 JAN 1857 • Kendall Westmorland England ) migrated to Australia in 1878 (Name CREARY Alexander Age 21 Ship Erato Year 1878 Arriving Sydney ) - thanks Gramps!! :-) - he then married Margaret Fotheringham had a pile of children in Australia - one of those, Joseph Creary - b. 1883 - was my great grandfather - who then had Roy Joseph Creary, my grandfather. Nearly all the Crearys on the east coast of Australia are descended from that one migration by Alexander Morton Creary and are therefore all directly related to Joseph Creary who was married to Jenett Low - Marriage 10 MAY 1845 • Ulverston Parish church, Lancashire
