Title: Churches near Garryduff in Ballymoney Parish
Post by: RosemaryJoan on Thursday 17 April 08 11:52 BST (UK)
Can anyone with local knowledge tell me the likely churches a family living in Garryduff townland in Ballymoney Parish would have attended in the 1850s-60s??
I am assuming that they were Presbyterian or Church of Ireland, being called Anderson.  I want to pay PRONI to search the church records for a baptism.  RosemaryJoan

Off the top of my head I can't think what the nearest churches would be but have a list of microfilmed records from PRONI that should cover that area so let me know names of churches and I can give you the dates of what's on the films before you head off to PRONI.
P.S. If no one comes up with names of nearest churches I'll have a look at my maps later for you.

Hello again aghadowey,  I have had a look at PRONI church records and by luck there is a Presbyterian Church in Garryduff MIC1P/265
The C of I are more complicated as we have
Dunaghy MIC1/198 and 299
and I don't know whether that covers the area I am researching.
Anyway, the dates for Garryduff would be great.
I know there is a townland called Dunaghy in Ballymoney Parish but don't know whether these records are for the same Dunaghy.
Thanks in advance, RosemaryJoan

Garryduff Presbyterian Church:
baptisms 1885-1985, marriages 1851-1936

This might also be worth looking at (no dates given on my list):
Film for Dunloy Presbyterian Church has Marriage Notice Book for Route Presbytery which includes Drumreagh, 1st Kilraughts, Ballyweaney, Garryduff, 1st Ballymoney, 3rd Ballymoey, Dervock.

Dunaghy Church of Ireland (2 films?):
baptisms 1877-1958
vestry minutes
registry of vestrymen 1870-1895
Dunaghy & Killagan: 1896-1921
Dunaghy, Killigan & Newtowncrommelin 1922-1937 (not sure but these last two could refer to registry of vestrymen).

Darn it!!!  The dates are all too late.  I am looking for a baptism about 1858 so I think we have come to a dead end unless anyone has any other suggestions.  The funny thing is that all the previous generation's births of this particular family are given in LDS.  Now, where did they get them from??
Anyway thanks aghadowey.  That saves time and money.

You can check LDS catalogue online and see what churches in area have been microfilmed (in case earlier records you mention are extracted records)- just type in 'Ballymoney' under Place and see what comes up.

Aghadowey - been there, done that AND yes, they have a microfilm of the manuscript of Parish Registry christenings 1807 -1875.  They also have marriages.
Will have to organise someone to visit a Family History Centre.  Thanks again, you are a fount of wisdom.  RosemaryJoan

Best to check that the LDS library actually has the item in question (or access to it from their library) BEFORE visiting or sending someone else there.

I have been researching my ancestry and have came across a William Anderson who married Mary Jane McKinney or McKenney on July 12th, 1870.  Registrar's district of Ballymoney, Presbyterian Church of Garryduff, county Antrim.  I also found the birth of their daughter, Martha on Feb. 5th, 1874, Garryduff.  Martha Anderson married my great grandfather, Robert Wilson.  I dont know if this is any help to you or not.

Hello andid
How interesting I have a Nancy McKenney birth abt 1822 married a James Dougherty,1842  there are a number of Anderson's in the cemetery at Garryduffy.  One is a Martha Anderson death 16 nov 1882.
Your Mary Jane could well be related to my Nancy. There is also a William, it is a family grave.  I was looking for a microfilm of the manuscript of Parish Registry christenings 1807 -1875.  They also have marriages.  As you can see I am looking for earlier records.

Hello heath,
Yes that is very interesting.  I havent been searching very long and just recently found this information.  My grandparents came from the Dervock/Ballymoney area.. My grandfather, Samuel Wilson married Tillie(Matilda)Carson and migrated to Canada in the early 1920's.  My dad was born, grew up, married and had a couple kids in the Toronto area then moved us to the US.. It has been a bit of a challenge finding information about my ancestors.  William Anderson is as far as I have been able to go so far and its possible it is the wrong Andersons.  I have done the DNA and have one of many 4th cousins that I think I am connected to through a " McAllister" as some came from the county Antrim area.  I havent found that name yet however.  Thank you so much for the information and I will post if I find any more on my end.  It would be interesting if my Andersons' are the Andersons' RosemaryJoan was looking for too.

I had read somewhere that some records from the Ballymoney area had been lost in a fire.  As many of my family is from that area, I will probably not be able to find all records..  Good luck to you.

Sometimes there are gaps in church records but you just need to check and see what's available before believing in 'stories' that might have no basis in fact.

Stroan townland- https://www.townlands.ie/antrim/cary/armoy/stroan/
PRONI Guide to Church Records- LINK (https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/sites/default/files/publications/PRONI-Guide-to-Church-Records.pdf)

For example- Roseyards Presbyterian Church- marriages 1790-1798 on microfilm in  PRONI then 1845-onwards in local custody.

Martha Anderson who died 16 Nov 1882 was my ggg-grandmother.  Her maiden name was Martha Burns. She married John Anderson, a farmer from Garryduff
