Title: 1901 Census Help Please
Post by: KarenM on Monday 21 April 08 15:49 BST (UK)
Hi there,

I have searched and searched and searched and I still cannot find my gr gr grandmother in the 1901  >:(

I might be trying so hard, that it's right in front of my eyes  ::)  So....

Sophia Bowman born c1833 sometimes she's born in England another time in Ontario.  Her husband is Benjamin Bowman, but I can't find a death for him so I have no idea when he died, altough I do have Sophia living with her daughter and son in lawn in Ingersoll in the 1911 and that is where she died in 1927.

I've no idea where she could be living in the 1901, I can't find my gr grandfather for that matter  :-[ , her son John Wm. Bowman born c1872.  He was born in Fenelon Falls, Ontario, but dies in Guelph, Ontario in 1918.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Karen

Hi Karen,

Certainly elusive, aren't they?

Do you have  Alice and family on the 1901 census? I had a look and couldn't find them myself but was wondering if perhaps Sophia might be with them in 1901 if she had been widowed by then as well?

Polarbear

HI everyone,

Indal. I'm not sure if she would have gone back to UK as I'm not even sure if she was born there  :-\

JJ, Benjamin was a Millwright on the census, 1871 & 1881, I've got the 1861 somewhere, but for the life of me I can't find it.  Benjamin's family is from Dundas County, Ontario (Morrisburg area).

Polarbear, they sure are  :(  Hmm, Alice, I can't seem to find her in the 1901 either????

Ach, Can't find any of them, McDougalls or Bowmans...Looked down some surname lists as well...no can find yet...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Margery's birth is on LDS site as being Dec. 1896, Fenelon Falls ( says Feneton & Findlay is spelled Findlay )
So they were there just a few years prior to the 1901...but can't find anything in Victoria county either
and...Although down as Alice on the 1911 she seems to use Maud on several things, so she may be found as Maud...But then her husband's forename of Findlay isn't widely used...even if mistranscribed their names are all easy to spot...and I've been stumped.
Any chance they are All visiting elsewhere...Family reunion no doubt!  :P
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interesting...
I was looking at the pdfs for F.Falls and did find this fellow...line 3
a John Ellis who is a lumberman...May just be coincidence but posting anyway...

Not with sister Jane Maynard ....Did you look into the other sister Mary Eliza Wilson  ( husband Archibald.)..There are several & I don't know her age

 >:( I can't find any of them either in the 1901!!!  I did find Archibald Wilson's death in 1934 in Toronto though and his wife Mrs. M.E. Wilson is the informant.

John Wm. Bowman's occupation I don't really know other than he worked at the factory across from my house (his house too  ;D ) Pirelli Cables, but back then it was called somthing else, they torn the factory down about 10 yeras ago to put up townhouses  ::)

Hi Polarbear,

I have no idea when exactly John Bowman married, (I havn't been able to find their marriage) having said that the first child, Joseph John Bowman was born August 1, 1903 in Guelph, Ontario.

John Wm. Bowman married Mary/May Heffernan.

Do you know where Sophia was buried? Have you tried contacting the cemetery to inquire whether Benjamin was buried there also?

Your Sophia  is proving to be a very elusive lady. Have had no luck either and I have tried every census that I can think of. Found Benjamin on 1851 census for Williamsburg Twp, Dundas age 21.

Perhaps Sophia just got missed on  1901 or maybe they were not living in Canada at the time. A lot of folks went to North Dakota and Michigan and then came back to Canada. Worth a thought.

Do you have Sophia's father's last name?

Hope you find her I'll take another look around sometimes our ancestors were not where we thought they were.

Good luck with your search.

Regards from snowy Calgary

Four households make an unusual amount of no shows from one family!  :-\

Benjamin & Sophia Bowman
Their son John  William Bowman
(and it seems Mary Heffernan, as his wife, or single)
Their daughter Mary Eliza and her husband Archibald Wilson & children
Their daughter Maud Alice ( aka Alice Maud ) & husband Findlay McDougall & children

Oh Lilybell, have seen the weather out in Alberta, please keep it there as we finally have had some nice weather!!

I do have that death certificate thanks.  I have no information whatsoever on Sophia, other than the death certificate and the 1871, 61, 81 and 1911 census.  I can't find even a sibling for her, she must have had one at least, shouldn't she  :-\

JJ, I'm glad it's just not me that can't find them, I keep getting mad at them and giving up on them, but I do wish I could get something about her.

Thanks everyone for your help and confirmation that I'm not crazy in not being able to find her!!  ;D

Hi Karen,

If we only had a maiden name for Sophia it would make things so much easier.

Don't give  up she has to be somewhere. I like a good mystery.

Warmer weather is on the way, thank goodness. I've had enough this snow.

From the death certificate it looks like she was born in Ontario but parents born in England. 'Race: English' merely means she was of English descent.
Title: Re: 1901 Census Help Please
Post by: J.J. on Tuesday 22 April 08 21:28 BST (UK)
Sophia's last name was Ellis...

aghadowey... :D
I assume Karen found Sophia down as born England on a census or two...

Karen, had you already looked at the fellow in Fenelon Falls named Ellis that I gave you earlier in this query? He was born England and is down as immigrated in 1835....so was thinking may be a sibling....He is also a lumberman as are a few others in your familes....

If she immigrated as a wee infant, maybe she didn't remember either way...
Title: Re: 1901 Census Help Please
Post by: KarenM on Tuesday 22 April 08 21:47 BST (UK)
Her maiden name was Ellis, that's true (well as far as I can tell),  at least it's on a birth "unnamed baby Bowman" which is John Wm. Bowman in Fenelon Falls and on Jane Francis Bowman & Mary Eliza Bowman's marriages.

I've been trying to follow that John Ellis all day, but can't find anything to connect him.

Thanks for joining in Agadowey, she has put on a census or two born in England and born in Ontario, so I've no idea.

Don't forget that the information on the death certificate was the information supplied by the informant who may or may not have known the true facts.

You're absolutly correct Agadowey, and since it was a granddaughter, I wonder how much she really knew  ;D

Now.....

I have found a death for a Edward Ellis in Fenelon Falls, born in Ireland c1825, but his doctor is A. Wilson, who I am assuming is Dr. Archibald Wilson, Sophia's son--in-law, the death is in 1884.  Am I stretching to much there????  :-\

According to that death certificate for Sophia, which I've no idea how accurate, but if it is, it lists Sophia's mother as Ann, there is a death for an Ann Ellis in Fenelon Falls in 1903, 95 years old, born c1808 in Ireland.

Yes I saw that Edward yesterday on the 1881..born Ireland....but in his home is also a John Ellis Lumber Merchant  born England...but this John says....born 1841...Now is this the same fellow... creative aging or creative census taking?
;D One never knows but my grandfather was many years out on the 1881...
Nothing like accuracy on documents!  :P J.J.

Also meant to add, they didn't usually have an aweful lot of doctors in small towns back in those days,  and I don't know the size of the place at the time...
but I'm pretty sure even if there were multiple, you are safe to assume that there weren't two Dr. A Wilsons serving the community

Here is a John on the 1852,  born in 1844 but says Ireland...I'd giggle but not sure that it's funny...

These are the only 2 deaths I could see for a Benjamin Bowman. The years don't exactly match, but might be worth checking.

Benjamin Bowman
Death Date: 19 Jul 1900
Age: 68 years
Place of Death: Colchester North, Essex, Ontario
Approx Birth Year  1832
Birthplace: Michigan.
Marital Status: Married

Benjamin Bowman
Death Date: 07 Apr 1907
Age: 72 years
Place of Death: Melancthon, Dufferin, Ontario, Canada
Approx Birth Year  1835
Birthplace: Canada.
Marital Status: Married

This last one looks like a good possibility.

Hi Karen,

Just wondering a couple of things: 1st, could she simply decided not to be part of the 1901 census? I know some people do that.

And, did she come to Canada with a family member or friend and/or was she "sponsored" by one?

Also wondering if there would be civic  (tax, property, etc) and/or church records (membership, etc) in Ingersol that would place her (and possibly husband) there in 1901?

I looked for info too Karen but came up dry - nothing that hasn't already been memtioned by the others. Anyway, perhaps an RCer in the Ingersol area can scrounge around town hall and the local churches for you :-)

Good Morning everyone!!

Janice thanks for that information, I have emailed a lady on the Ontario Cemetery Resources to see if she can find Benjamin buried in Fenelon Falls.

JJ, that Wm and Ann Ellis looks promising I think?  I wish I could find her on the 1851 or even a marriage for them.

Fenelon Falls isn't that big a town, and it's only about an hour and half from me, I'm thinking road trip  ;D

JDC you could be right, would be my luck that they weren't on it.

Hmm, I've got an 8 year old who couldn't decide what shoes to wear to school today and has now missed the bus, so now I've got to drive her  ::)

Hello Karen

Here is another birth for Benjamin and Sophia.

061215-71 Victoria County
Bowman not given b. 16 July 1871
Father Benjamin Bowman lumberer
Mother Sophia Ellis
Infirm-Dr Fitzgerald-Fenelon Falls

Looks like a stillbirth with no name given.

Another little bit of information about Findlay McDougall on the 1911 Census

b. 15 July 1851 Glasgow, Lanark, Scot

Father John McDougall

Mother Sarah Moffat

From ScotsOrigins

Anyone run accross a marriage for Benjamin and Sophia yet ?

Trying to put together a time line.

Benjamin could have married Sophia about 1858 0r 59 . According to 1881 Census for Dundas County,Ont,

Morrisburg oldest child  William  born  c 1859,Maud b 1864 and John b. 1871

I think marriage registrations started in 1867 ; could check Parish records.

When did Benjamin die? Anyone  find a death.

Does that name sound familiar, and could she have been married to a doctor or lawyer etc.?

Here it is on Our Roots, but I still can't find the quote.

Minnie could be Mary Eliza Bowman, just a nick name.  She was married to Archibald Wilson who was a doctor.

Did you see that Sawmills and Planning Mills book that had Ben Bowman?  Benjamin was a mill wright and an engineer, so maybe there's a connection?

Here's Alice McDougall obituary.  Says she was born in Inkerman (same place as Scotty Bowman  ;D ) and that they moved from Fenelon Falls to Ingersoll 45 years ago in 1955.

http://www.ocl.net/tribune/search_me.asp?ss=Bowman&ss2=&wildcard=3&RS_per_page=10&SortBy=Surname&Start_RS=40&sf=Surname

The lady who I emailed about the cemetery has emailed me back saying she found Sophia in the 1901 listed as a widow and living with Alice.  I've emailed her back and asked how/where she found that.

Thanks for that Linda, it's me that posted that.  I have a picture of John Bowman and on the back says taken in Rochester New York. My gr grandmother, Mary Heffernan's brother lived in Rochester and my grandma used to spend alot of time at Uncle Charlie and Aunt Kitty's house in Rochester.  I've often thought John Bowman and Mary Heffernan must have met in Rochester??  But I can find no marriage in Rochester or Guelph  :-\  I can find no border crossing for either of them also.

Well, there you go, they are all down there for the wedding!!!  ;D  ;D  ;D

Actually, that might just be a prospect...

I wonder if the lady found her in 1911 with Alice....? seems likely as we have
all searched high and low using different methods...

Plus now you know John worked in leathers!

I can't get nos racine to work at all... I am not sure if they are just busy or what,
but even though I have a really fast and gutsy computer now ...so many
databases work less well than before... :P

Have you checked on the company of Green & Ellis who owned a sawmill
in Fenlon Falls? Being that many of your fellows seem to be lumbermen...

Thanks JJ, I'll have to follow up with that Green & Ellis, could be a lead.

In replying to another thread, I was thinking about my gr uncle Joe Bowman, who died in the Sanitorium in Kitchener.  For some reason I didn't have his death certificate, so I brought it up on ancestry from 1932, well...... ::)

It lists his father, John Bowman born Rochester, New York and mother May Heffernan, Marden, Ontario (I knew that)  The informant is my gr grandmother, May Heffernan/Bowman, surley to god she would know where her husband was born wouldn't she ???  She's also put "Scotch" for racial orgin.  She also has her son as a maker of shoes.

LOL, think I'm going to call May's granddaughter (my mother  ;D ) and see if she can shed anymore light on this, but I'm sure I'll get the same old thing...."you just didn't ask back then"  >:(

Well, Goodness knows we'll like "Scotch"  ::) ...Guess she gave in and conformed to the norm...When in Rome and all that...
Odd that she would put Rochester as place of birth...Might he have been born in the states, but registered in Canada? You do have a mixed bag of answers to sort through, don't you/

Hey, Our roots, worked perfectly for me just now....
I imagine you know most of what's in here, as you have so much family history on the family in Ontario...but I know you will want to read it anyway,  if you haven't already, as it is so interesting. Bowman surname mentioned...the author's middle name is Bowman as well...

I can never get Our roots to work for me  ::)  I did at one point think my Bowman's could be UEL, they settled in the Morrisburg area of Ontario which had a huge UEL presence.  I went to Upper Canada Village a couple of years ago, was really neat.  I also went to see the woman who has done a ton or work on the UEL.  She actually helps you apply for UEL status, getting all your birth certificates in order and everything, quite impressive really.  She had lots of information on my Bowman's, but of course had nothing on Benjamin (just my luck) I guess cause he had moved away, but all his siblings had stayed in the area.

As for putting her husband being born in Rochester, I don't know what she was thinking.  Mind you, on my grandmother's marriage certificate she has her father being born in Smiths Falls instead of Fenelon Falls.  There is one more birth certificate for a son of theirs that was born um, 1910 I think, hopefully there might be some information on it.  My grandmother's birth was never registered and if you look it up on ancestry, it is a delayed statement of birth that my grandma filled out in 1971.

My mum knew nothing of her uncle being a shoe maker LOL, she said he owned a camera store, go figure  ;D.  He was in the sanitorium for 3 years.

Sneak up on it one day when you don't really need it and it may work for you!
Ha! That's what happened yesterday, just tried it for the heck of it, and put in a few surnames, and there you go...
I still never got the one Janice gave you though...
Janice, your computer seems to like the contankerous databases.... ;D

As you know, Boot & Shoemakers, saddlers, rein & harness makers etc. all work in leathers...so there may have been another ancestor who taught them the trade...
Although an HBC voyageur all his young life, Hubby's ancestor took up Ferry work, then boot & shoe making...His sons took up ferry & also working with leather...
The just a few years ago we found out that his father in Quebec was working as a bootmaker
;D I find the occupations so interesting as well...Your bunch were quite versatile, it seems...
( also sorry, I know you were researching UER at one time, and thought they were...)

Well I have Sophia in the 1891 Census now living with her daughter Alice McDougall and son in law Finlay in Fenelon Falls.  She is listed as a married.

In the 1901 she is a widow and still with the McDougall's, but she is down as Mary Bowman and not Sophia, but it's definatly her.
