I'm really struggling to find the following person. Apparently he was born in Nova Scotia in c1890, but i havn't been able to find him. All i know about him is who he married Annie Defries in British Columbia who herself is from London, England, and that his parents are Charles & Mary Moriez (Unknown DOB/place of birth). Can anyone help.

There is a Bernard Morris, born 1891 on the 1920 US Census in Alcatraz Prison in California. He is serving time and is from Canada :-\
Karen
-
He states that he is divorced and came to US in 1914. Do you know if Bernard and Annie divorced?
Karen
-
No they never divorced. They both died in the 1970's in British Columbia. They married in 1911 and their last child was born in 1921.
Regards
Browny

His full name is filled in on the death as Bernard Joseph Moriez, which is where it sounds as though you may have gotten the details, as most people know where they were born ?
Have you asked someone to look at the actual marriage details in 1911 Northfeild for you? If not please ask in a new reply
I have looked for the surname and I am wondering if it was misspelled by Bernard and so changed for posterity...sometimes people drop vowells or consonants for the convenience of others...so that it a name is constantly miss-spelled, it becomes the new way of spelling it...?
There is no name even close in any available data online for N.S.
Their son Joseph Nathan was 1 yr. old when he died, 1912, so they should be found on the 1911...! I'll look again...
-
Yes i have the marriage entry. His father is listed as Charles Moriez and his mother as Mary Moriez. His residence is listed as Erlinson?, and born in Nova Scotia
-
Haven't spotted them....Northfield is in Mountain district...
Looked in there....but nothing close
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/EnumerationDistrict.jsp?sdid=3679
Ladysmith is in Oyster, nothing jumps out of the surname list
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/Test17.jsp?sdid=3680
-
Erlinson?
Extension! Where the first child was born! Iwas thinking it was some name for a new area that was unnamed or something, but I just looked and it's an actual place...but I can't find it within a district on the 1911 :-\
I'd like to confirm that he is from N.S as well...sometimes it is written instead of N.B.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think it is in the same district of Nanaimo above, so they might have been missed on the census...
But I'm not thinking anyway...there's people you can talk to if they are willing...family!
There are only four Moriez in all of Canada..in you guessed it...B.C...
( 3 in nanaimo...We aren't to mention names of the living, but if you write to one or all of them, I'm sure someone will have some information for you on ancestry of the family....
Phooey, wanted to save you some time and looked for an email address...
Found this fellow, but he doesn't have anything online...
Interesting, though as he makes bows for archery, and his product seems to be very popular...
Welcome to rootschat..It would be nice if we could go back into Nova Scotia and find this family.
I know I looked through all the censuses back then, but will put what I found today ...although it means nothing right now, so will cross it through unless it turns out to be something valid..Still can't find a trace of Bernard, was he born another name?
( deleted as found the birth reg for Bernard, next posting)
-
Oh I see his birth is now listed that is great...as Morriez, Bernard Joseph b. 1889 Thorburn, Pictou ...did you find the father Charles Joseph Morriez born Belgium and a miner on census, then? Mother listed as Marie Bernardine Morriez... This was a late registration, 1926, Charles died by then, plus a sister to Marie...Marie Theresa Gerard gave the information so another clue
https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/ItemView.aspx?ImageFile=1904-68100606&Event=birth&ID=154842
Aunt Theresa Marie Gerard death also in B.C. stated her last name was Daye ( Baptist Daye and Finella Vandermissen )
She was also born in Belgium so that might be why no marriage for Charles and ? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FL5H-J3K
More in B.C. Adele Daye born Begium married Leopold Lefas in 1894 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDZK-R4L
John Baptiste Daye & Philomene Vandermissens
also a death & marriage for Oscar Joseph Daye, same parents https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FLGG-H5K
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDZL-B7X
The Day family immigrated circa 1887 Fillomene, & Morris Day a nephew in house of another Marie married to a Bulange/s in 1911
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=60281
( Morris's father was Prosper Daye https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDZ8-2Z1)
Oscar says imm 1890 http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=60313
Adele says 1890 http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=60309
a couple more Daye that may belong as info may be miss-trancribed
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDZ2-4D7 & https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDZ2-7QN
see now Ladysmith was where Adele lived as well...
I can find information in B.C. but not in Nova Scotia
-
So here is Bernard 1901, with mother as Daye...Marie says she's a widow...two more daughters born B.C.
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/ViewFrame.jsp?id=60927&highlight=18
ackkk...so has she just gone back to her maiden name then? I',m so confused!!! :) But perhaps the family was in transit after his birth so it was never registered? also 1891 I just don't see them...
But was that Mary getting married for a second time in reply above? to Frank Ottan
-
yes it was her marriage just found them in Alberta 1906 as Hatten/Hotten and children Danyc
Frank Head age 31 born Belgium
Mary Wife age 42 born Belgium
Bernard step son age 18 born N.S.
Adel step daughter born age 16 born N.S.
Prosper stepson 12 Alberta http://people.ucalgary.ca/~dsucha/miners.html
Alex stepson 10 Alberta
August stepson 8 Alberta
ahh, so Charles may have died in Alberta? But where are Mary & Alice born B.C. Now more confusing...
~~~~~~~~
Back to calling herself Daye as a widow in 1911 http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=11149
Seems August belonged to Prosper Day & Marie Dubouis...
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDDW-77X
and Alex https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDD7-LMD
Was this an aunt looking after Bernard, then? I don't think both couples had a Bernard born Nova Scotia as I can even find one...
-
and a wrench to throw into the works, is a Della Cameron child of Prosper Daye, Mary Dubois born in Nova Scotia
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F3Q7-MB4 so Adele from the census...
~~~~~~~~~
added ww1 signup for Bernard Day born Nova Scotia http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gpc002/283559a.gif
So there were 2 of them? still where is one when we find the other? Can anyone else clear this up?
Sorry going back to marriage information he was Moriez in 1911....so that is a cousin born similar dates
So Need to find Mary with Alice & Mary to see if they belong to Mary Morriez or the other aunt also Mary/Marie Theresa daye Gerard??? I couldn't find anything for Gerard, though...
~~~~~~~~~`
Here are some of Barnard Gerard and Theresa's children ...one also born around the same time in Nova Scotia

Here is Marie Boulanger swearing to the late registration for Joseph Benjamin Gerard
https://novascotiagenealogy.com/ItemView.aspx?ImageFile=1904-68400433&Event=birth&ID=156487
so makes it confusing, three sisters all Marie just as with Quebec searches...See now that Mary is daughter Boulanger, and Alice as regard must have been an error on census...So the elusive Bernard Morriez remains elusive...
added
Saw Arthur was born in U.S. so here they are in 1910 and Bernard is with them with Mary & Alice Regard and Morris day ::) says he is a stepson.....ack...
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MGJJ-FGC But this is the correct mother....I can only find one Amand Regard, born Belgium, but was quite a young fellow ....... She is quite inventive with her birth age ;) Wonder if she married all these men, and did she use her maiden name?
Mary Thresa Regard Apr. 5 1894 Northfield, British Columbia
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDZY-4VC
Alice Regard Jun 6 1898 Northfield, British Columbia, Canada
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDZL-9RH
Parents Amond/Amand Regard & Mary Bernadine Daye
Death of brother Arthur Philip Boulanger
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FL1K-DQ2
Arthur Joseph Boulanger & Marie Bernadine Daye
-
who are you ? are you related to the Moriez family ?
-
No relation at all, but recognized a good hunt & I just like to dig in and poke around to see if I can help...I went about it in a roundabout way, because for some reason when I put in Marie Bernadine Daye as a mother on the FHS site I never got an answer to I was intrigued as to why...I likely must have put Morriez or Moriez in the subject line as too much information gets less results....Mind you Boulanger and Regard surnames would have thrown me had I seen them right away anyway..
Sorry if you had a lot of this but I didn't have time to keep notes so just putting some of it on the thread to refer back to was the only way to keep track of what I'd found.
If there is anything you need just let us know and we'll be happy to look for more...There are some marriages etc...I hadn't posted
-
Well there is only one death for a Regard in B,C, and that is for Eliza Marchant Regard whose husband was frank...
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FLVB-N6Y
and that was the name of Omand's father;D if this is the correct man...He is alive and well, so they may never have married.
https://www.familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Aamand~%20%2Bsurname%3Aregard%20%2Bbirth_place%3Abelgium
Prosper's family surely had some bad luck...Note mining accident and first page, KarenM's find...
-
I am his great granddaughter so if you can help with the family tree that would be cool.
-
there were a lot of spelling mistakes in the gov records there is regard and gerard in the family marie Bernadine (Daye ) morriez remarried in august 10 1901 in Nanaimo bc canada .she had 1 son previous Bernard Joseph Morriez .bernard father was charles joseph morriez and he was from Belguim but that in all i know about him . I hear that he died in Alberta in a mine accident.
-
If you follow the links on the previous page, beside mary and Frank's census listing in Alberta... Prosper's son Prosper died in the Hillcrest Mine Disaster June 19, 1914. It is possible another family member died in a mine disaster, as Charles was a miner...but it may have been a mistake along the line perpetuated by repetition...Family Histories can go astray so until there is proof found, we don't know where Charles died. Certainly Alberta might have been the case as we cannot access BMD information, and nobody has found a death it seems. But newspapers usually eventually did reveal names so it should have been found unless he was badly miss spelled.
-
Had to try all sort of combinations as transcribed as Dugl so have removed the other. Don't know why I couldn't get it using his name...last night...but just used marie born Belgium and sifted through
Marriage 22 Mar 1893 British Columbia, Canada
Amond Rigard Age37 1856 Belgium Bachelor
Parents Donar & Marie
Marie Dugl Age26 1867 Belgium Widowed
Jean and Floman

i was told that Charles was burred in Canmore alberta in the old grave yard but a lot of the gravemarkers are gone but the grave yard is being cleaned up and that that are trying to identify all the graves.my name is Roberta Moriez my grandfather was Bernard Charles Joseph born on may 25 ,1917 he died in nanaimo on sept 7 1977 in a fire if you want i can email you the info on how he died he is a hero nanaimo . his father was bernard joseph Moriez born in nova scotia born aug 27 1889 died in nanaino feb 26 1970 and his father was charles morriez born in Belgium ???died in albert????
-
This mining disaster doesn't seem to be chron icled, perhaps it was "near" Canmore?? Still does make sense that he died in Alberta, and too bad as it costs to have searches done for the BMD information. It would be worthwhile if there was more information on his background, but death certs aren't always complete either...
I see that "Barney" was a very brave fireman and there is a park named after him to honour this act.
Also posting the 1901 marriage with Arthur Boulanger as surname Roselauger / 10 Aug 1901 / British Columbia
Arthur Roselauger 1866 Belgium, Widowed -parents Jean B & Pauline
Marie Regard 1867 Belgium, Widowed parents - Jean B Daye & Philomene

My name is Mary and I am researching the 189 men killed in the Hillcrest Mine disaster - some things I found about Prosper Daye - don't know if it'll help your research. Prosper Sr, and wife Mary were between 1887-1890 in Nova Scotia - 6 children: Morris b. 1885 Belgium, Bernard and Adel was born in NS in 1887 and 1890, Prosper, Alex and August in Alberta in 1893, 1895 and 1898. In 1901 Mary Daye was living in Kootenay, BC - Mary's husband Prosper died 13 Jun 1900, age 42 in Canmore, Alberta. In 1906 Mary Daye had married another Belgium immigrant - Frank Hottin (Hotten, Hatten) living in Lille, AB - near Hillcrest. By 1911 Mary was in Hillcrest and listed as Mary Daye - son Prosper was 17 - he was killed in 1914.
I think the following is Mary - marriage 22 Mar 1917, Fernie, BC, George William Oversby, age b. 1873 Orkneys, Scotland, widower married Marie Dubois, age 49, b. 1868, Belgium, widow of Frank Otton. She died 14 Oct 1941 Duncan, BC.
I have a little more like this - does it help - if so I can tell more.
