Title: Salt Family in Wootton
Post by: RosieGrey on Tuesday 22 April 08 13:14 BST (UK)
Is anyone else researching Salts in Wootton?  If so I would love to hear from you.

I have my 4xgt.grandparents William Salt b1772 married Ann Heath b1788 at Ellastone in 1806.  They had twelve children and lived at Nook Farm Wootton, and I suspect the farm may have been in the family for generations.

A recent find in the Ellastone parish registers set off that train of thought.  All I need now is more research!:-
"18 Oct 1611.  John Hill, vicar of Ellaston married Elyzabeth daughter of William Salt of Wootton"

Hi Rosie

I possibly have a distant link to this family.  My great grandmothers sister, Martha Noden (b1861)  married a Samuel Salt in Silverdale, Newcastle, staffs on 24th May 1895.

Samuel was born in 1874 in Wooton and was the son of George Mitcham Salt. I have not looked to see if there is any link to William but I will see if I can find anything and let you know.

In 1891 Martha was listed as a barmaid at the Bromley Arms in Ellastone and Samuel is living with his great uncle Thomas Salt in Wootton.

In 1901 Samuel and Martha are living in Wootton with their daughter Elsie, with Samuel listed as a farmer.

I have not got any further with this branch as yet. let me know if there is any connection to your salt family!

Hello Bel

I think I have found your George M Salt in the 1861 census in Church Street Longton.  He is with his parents William and Margaret Salt, William is a timber merchant and beer seller, born c1819 in Wootton.

My 4xgt.grandparents William Salt & Ann Heath had a son William bapt 1820 at Ellastone, so we could have a link, but there were three other Williams also baptised in 1818/1819 so I cannot say for sure unfortunately.

Thanks Carol.

My lot are definitely from Wootton, but one thing I have learnt since starting to research them is that there are a lot of Salts in the county!
Plus there is a Wootton near Eccleshall.

Was your Ann Salt born in Cotton?

On the 1841 census she is just listed as being born in Staffordshire but, according to the 1851 census she is listed as being born in Cotton.

Because her birth is pre 1837 I'm not sure of the correct date but, according to Staffordshire BMD she married James in Alton 1842.

Both Ann & James died in 1855 which is another little mystery to solve. ???

Hi Carol,
Just noticed your post - James Brindley and Ann Salt also appear in my tree.  Not direct ancestors of mine - but link in through James' mother Keziah Warrington.
Happy to share my Warrington info with you if you're interested  (have also got Brindleys back to William 1720 - though I guess you may already have all that ) :)

Am I on the right track here ...

In 1851 I believe John and Mary ran the Bromley Arms - the only reason I know is that it appears my g-g-g'mother worked as a servant for them as a 12 year old in the same year.

Harriet Udale b 1839, born Calwich (?) seemed to have lived there without any other family members. Can anyone shed any more light??

Thanks

hello, I don't know if these are related to your Salts but my great great grandmother was born Sarah Salt in 1821 and died in 1848 leaving 4 children who were then sent to Uttoxeter Workhouse.

Hello Rosie

I am also a descendant of William Salt and Ann Heath (3xgg), through their daughter Sarah Salt (b1830).

I'm not sure how much information you have now as I noticed that you submitted your original post 12 months ago, but if you have any information of William Salt such as his parents etc, then that would be fab, as I haven't got any further back for him.

It's been an absolute nightmare trying to figure out which Salt was which, particularly in Wootton and Ellastone. I've also got the added problem that one of my Salts married a Finney, which was another popular name around there too!

Bye
Willow

Hi
Wondering if this is a connection?  William Salt would be my 3X gg grandfather.

I have William Salt born 1776 Nook Farm, Wootton married Anne Unknown.  My connection is Mary Salt born 1824 died 1899 Holmfield Manitoba Canada.  She married David Harrison 1849 and immigrated to Canada around 1857.  Children that I have  for William and Ann: John 1821, William 1822, Mary 1824, Ellen 1827, Sarah 1830, Samuel 1832, and Ralph 1834.  All born at Wootton.

Hi Clevercat

William Salt of Nook Farm was my 4xgt.grandfather so yes, we do have a connection and I am pleased to meet you.  He married Ann Heath at St.Peters Ellastone in 1806 and I have found 12 children for them altogether, including Rebecca Salt b1810, my 3xgt.grandmother.

In the 1851 census Rebecca's daughter Mary Ann Salt was living with David and Mary Harrison, in Chester Road, Macclesfield, Cheshire.  She was working as a cook for them their children and their three lodgers.  I have never been able to find David and Mary after 1851, now I know from your post that they emigrated to Canada!

I have gradually acquired a lot of information about the Salt family and am happy to share with you.  Are you descended from William Salt Harrison?

Hi all...
Just in case it may be of any use - I've just finished transcribing all the Parish Registers for Alton St Peter's - baptisms, marriages & burials from 1675-1837 for FreeReg.  They're not online yet, but should go up over the next week or so when they upload this months batch.

The Alton registers are heaving with Salt families & folk from Wootton would often use the Church at Alton as well as the one at Ellastone.
Might be worth a search if any of your Salts have gone missing! :)

Hi Beryl

Thanks for replying.

Yes William Salt Harrison is my great grandfather.  I don't have a firm date around 1857  when they came to Canada but settled in Mitchell Ontario, where 6 more children where born two died in infancy and one I have not been able to trace.  David died in 1870 Mary in 1899. William, and his brother Matthew and George came to Manitoba about 1879.   Mary the sister came later.  Also Mary Salt also came to Manitoba. They settled around Holmfield MB.

Be very interested in any info that you have on the Salt's

We currently live at Nook Farm, Wootton. We are aware of the Salt Family history - and clevercat - it looks like you have a photo of our House :-)

Does anyone have any photos they could send us - or any requests for information about the House or Wootton?

Hi Steve

How marvellous that you live at Nook Farm!

I started this topic in 2008 when I began to have an interest in the Salt family of Wooton, and in particular at Nook Farm.  The earliest mention of a Salt in the Ellastone parish registers that I have found was in 1584 when William Salte baptised his son Thomas, and then three more sons by 1591.  In that year a John Salt married Jone Parkar, and both William and John are described as freemasons, ie stonemasons, in the registers.  I think William and John were brothers, but they may have been father and son, both also served as churchwardens at Ellastone church.

Work probably brought them to Wootton in the late 16th century, and it may have been to help build Wootton Lodge which was built as a hunting lodge for Sir Richard Fleetwood between 1580 and 1610.  I understand that Nook farm was also built in the late 16th century and am wondering whether they built that as well.  I would be very interested indeed to know how far back your knowledge of the Salt family goes.

I have traced my Salt family tree back to both of the original freemason Salts.  The connection with Nook farm I have traced back to Samuel Salt baptised in 1648, son of John and Emma Salt and gt.grandson of the original William.  Thomas died in 1699 and administration was granted to his wife Ann, also a Salt and gt.granddaughter of the original John Salt.  The administration lists his belongings and mentions "the goods in the house in the nook for it is commonly called so."

The Salts would have farmed as tenants and the Manorial Rolls should have records of changes of tenancy.  I have not looked at those yet, the combination of Latin and being written in secretary hand is a bit daunting.  The Salt family connection with Nook farm is my main interest now and I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Regards
Beryl

Hello Steve of Nook Farm
We are also descended from William Salt and Ann Heath through their son Samuel born 1832.   He married Mary Marson in 1854 in Wednesbury and had two daughters plus a son William John.   William John's son Selwyn born 1884 in Gravesend and was our grandfather.
Samuel was the vicar of the Church of the Resurrection in Dresden, Longton, for 40 years.   He died in
1907 and was buried in that churchyard along with his wife, daughter Elizabeth and daughter in law Helena.
We would like to visit both the church and Wootton soon.

Hi, any help greatly appreciated. I have just been doing my hubbys line and his 5th Gr Grandmother was Prudence Salt born 1777 in Ellastone, who married William Walker in 1797. My own 5th Great Grandmother is Ann Salt, born abt 1757 in Ellastone who married James Warrington in 1778. So many records for Salts there but would to know if there's a link or if anyone can help with the parents both sides that would be appreciated. (We already share 5th Gr Grandparents on a different side! Ouch!)

Thank you to anyone in advance who can help!

Lisa
