Title: Swan family from Shotts/Harthill
Post by: bluedooo on Saturday 26 April 08 15:08 BST (UK)
This is a long shot.  I'm helping a friend research their family history and in particular her Swan relatives from the Shotts area.
Its a long story, including an unexplained adoption, but here is some of what I have.

Francis Swan born C1862 in Ireland married Martha McKay born C1880 in Ireland.  Francis was a coal miner.  Their first child Annie Ethel Swan born 1898 in Shotts was put up for adoption and was my friends mother.

I have found Francis and Martha's 2nd child William Swan born 1900 in Shotts who married Sarah Ann Dodds.  Here are the children I have found of William and Sarah Ann -
William born 1930 Main Street Harthill (married Annie Miller)
Stewart born 1932 Main Street Harthill (married Jean Roy)
Albert born 1934 West Main Street Harthill
Elizabeth Dodds Swan born 1936 Harthill (married Anthony Clay)
John Swan born 1939 Watt Terrace Harthill
David Swan born 1942 Watt Terrace Harthill

It would appear that Swan is a popular surname in the Shotts area but I would dearly love to put my friend Theresa in touch with a living relative.

Francis and Sarah Ann probably had more children but I am wondering if you could reply if any of the above looks at all familiar to you.

Best Regards
Tom

Tom,
If you are trying to locate living Swan relatives, here is a link to Jimmy Swan who lives in Whitburn
same locale as you are searching. He is a Local Councillor for West Lothian, he may be able to help you.

Hello  bluedooo,
I stumbled across your post purely by chance this morning as I was trying to find information on a very dear friend. I had no idea this website existed prior to today.
I am writing from Australia with mixed emotion.

I believe I have information that would be of interest to your friend. I am not sure if this post is still active since you posted quite sometime ago, therefore I will wait until I hear from you before sending you the  information I have. Also, I am having so much trouble trying to submit this reply. So I am hoping you will not receive it more than once.
Kind regards

Hello,

My Grans name is missing from the list of children Martha Swan born 1936. I have been trying to find out about her brother David for her as he moved to Australia when he was younger but waiting on someone getting back to me.

Hi my father was related to Martha,  Albert sadly passed on 5/2/16 he was born 26/2/1934. I have been trying to find out information from his side of the family as everyone thought my father had moved to Canada to pursue his boxing career but he moved to London and married my mother Eileen in 1974.  Any information would be greatly received.
Thank you
Diana.

Hi Diane

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Can see from posts over the years in other forums how long you have been working on this all!

Just checking that you are aware (sure you are...but you never know) that Nancy is a common variant of Agnes and Ann? See www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=nancy

With the different variants for Nancy, these may be siblings to your Francis:

Jane 1864 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FRHG-JMB
Isabella 1866 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FPTG-R24
Anna (twin) 1866 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F5X5-8RH

Maybe Ann (twin) born in 1866 died young? There is an Ann Swan born in 1876 for whom there is a marriage and death in New York. Mum shows as Agnes in her marriage reg and Nancy in her death reg.

1905 marriage: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:24MB-P8Y
1948 death: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WP8-NH3

Thank you so much. I know there was an Ann who died young,  I'll have to sig out my 2008 research files and have a look because I'm sure I found her.

Unfortunately my research is water damaged and I can only make out some of it.  I can't find the bit about the little one who passed away. The bits I can make out are the same as what's written above in previous posts.

Some possible deaths that you could follow up. Both have mother's maiden name as McKay:

Maud Swan, age 75. Died in 1978 in Cupar. Other surname Baillie

Rachel Swan, age 77. Died in 1982 in Shotts. Other surname Callighan.

Since starting my search I know that Uncle Frank who never married or had any children remained living in Scotland until his death. Uncle William remained in Scotland until his death, uncle David moved to Australia where he passed away and my father Albert passed away in Basingstoke 5/2/16. I have the dates of Frank's, William and David's deaths also. I still can't trace my aunties Martha and Elizabeth. I don't know if they ever married or moved out of Scotland or if they are alive. The previous posting about Martha was back in 2008 so it's been quite a while. Any tips on where I could look please ? I'm hitting huge brick walls.

What are the details for your Aunt Martha?

Elizabeth Dodds Swan married I think in 1960 in Lanarkshire to Anthony McClay.

Monica

Added: Sorry, see you had the marriage already for Elizabeth. Entry showing as McClay rather than Clay.

Martha and liz are twins. That's as much as I know. Also I found a census with my Swan's at Muirhead there are 2 other houses with Swan's in the same street. Is it possible they could all belong to the same Swan's do you think?

I thought it was mcclay.

I don't know if this is any of your crowd.

Daniel Swan – Private 11348 - South African Infantry 2nd Battalion.

Daniel, born 1888, son of David Swan, of 268 Pretoria Place, Dykehead, Shotts.

“Mr. David Swan, 268 Station Road, Shotts, was officially notified that his son, Private Daniel Swan, of the South African Force, died of wounds on the 24th September 1917 in France.  Private Swan had previously taken part in West and East Africa campaign.”

Private Swan was killed in action on Monday 24th September 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). He was part of the South African Brigade, 9th Scottish Division.

Private Swan is buried in Nine Elms British Cemetery, Poperinge, West Vlaanderen, Belgium, Plot I. Row E. Grave No. 7 and commemorated on Shotts War Memorial.

I too are seeking living members of the  SWAN family from West Benhar, Eastfield and Whitburn.
I am doing the leg work for my friend whos mother was Jane SWAN born 1909 Fauldouse to david Swan Miner and wife Maggie or Margaret STRACHAN.

David died 12 May 1930 at Gasworks Lane Whitburn West Lothian  his wife remarried a Andrew McAlpine. She died in 1937 result of a fall.

In the 1911 Census the family were at 8 Gasworks Lane Whitburn. census shows
married 24 years and 12 children with 9 alive.
Both parents were born in Ireland married in West Benhar 10 Aug 1887.

So far I have Maggie born  about 1889 in North America
Agnes   born   do     1890     Shotts Lanark
                   Samuel born            1891     Ireland  married
Mary Ellen               1893     West Benhar  Lanark
                   Annie                      1893     Shotts Lanark
                   William                    1896     Harthill Lanark
                   David                      1900     Shotts Lanark
                   Francis                    1906     West Benhar  Lanark
                   Jane                        1909     Fauldhouse Linlithgow
Samuel married Alice McFarlane Lees he died March 30 1952 at Croftfoot Drive Fauldhouse. I dont have the marriage info just what is on SP for the death.

William married Catherine McFarlane 30 Dec 1921 at Gateside Whitburn his address was 12 Gasworks lane Whitburn.

Jane married a Williamson and was divorced (I have not found a record of this marriage or divorce) and remarried an American Seaman and moved to Canada where she died.
One of her children would like to get in touch with his mothers relatives.
