Title: Doherty Family Nicknames - Link
Post by: Christopher on Sunday 27 April 08 06:16 BST (UK)
In an area like the Inishowen peninsula where so many families had, and still have, the same surname it was necessary for them to have nicknames to identify the different families. These "nicknames" don't relate to  individuals ... they are more like second surnames adopted by a family line and passed on for a generation or more.  Unfortunately most of these nicknames were probably never written down which means that this rich tradition is a piece of oral history which could be lost.  E. Doherty has tried to compile a list of as many Doherty family nicknames as possible.  This list was derived from various sources, mostly submissions from other people over the internet.  Some nicknames have been submitted by more than one person http://home.insightbb.com/~e.doherty/nickname.htm

This link has been reported broken.

There is a Ó Dochartaigh / Doherty website here:
http://www.odochartaigh.org/

and under Genealogy in the menu you can find some more Doherty links:

The link Christopher supplied is also mentioned there, but it seems he's moved his website (again) ....

Since Doherty is one of the most common surnames in Co. Donegal you really need to know exactly where they lived (townland) to start looking for connections- and even within the same townland it may be difficult to find any existing records that go back far enough to link families to each other.

I know the original site has since closed down, but I had printed off the relevent pages which I have now scanned onto my pc.

hi p.
my james (g/grandfather) first shows in glasgow in 1879 when he married margaret gallagher.
his marriage cert lists his parents as john docherty (deceased)and agnes odonnell formerly docherty, maiden surname docherty.
james was a coalminer, and lived and raised his family in bridgeton. does this tie in with your james?

                   regards.doch.

Hi Doch,
Sorry to say your info does not tie in to mine. My g'father was Philip Docherty, born in Glasgow in 1901.His brother was James, born in Donegal in 1884.(family of 10 children).Philip's father was John Docherty married to Agnes McLaughlan. They married in 1882 in Buncrana.John's father was also John, married to Susan Doherty. Susan's father was John McLaughlan Married to Agnes Barr.I know it is like a needle in a haystack, trying to find the right branch of the Docherty tree!
Hope someone else may be able to help us both!

hi p.doc.
thanks for your reply. you'r right when you say it's like a needle in a haystack. the only refference i have to my james birthplace is the 1881,1891,1901 census where his and margaret's place of birth is listed as ireland. so i'm up against a bit of a brick wall.

   good luck in your search.regards.doch.

To DOC1 - My grandfather Joseph Doherty was your great-grandfather John's brother. It's a long time since your post, but maybe you're still working on your family tree. I noticed that Agnes McLaughlin says on her marriage certificate that her father is Hugh McLaughlin, though John McLaughlin is given on her death cert. I've been finding it difficult to pin down John and Susan Doherty and had followed your g-g-grandfather John for more info on Scottish records. I do have a photograph of John Doherty - he died in 1918 at the grand old age of 107. I do have some info if you're still looking.

Hi i have just joined Roots. I only have my grandfathers death year as 1971. He was Bernard Doherty, nickname Stout, married to Madge Doherty, son Patrick Doherty died 2007 and daughter Rita (Margaret Doherty) my mother died 1997. The nearest name i can pinpoint their address to is Foffanagh.

There was a Bernard Doherty from Foffenagh (father Patrick) that married a Madge Doherty (father Hugh)  from Connagh Kinnego in 1933 at Buncrana Parish.

Here's a link to the record page. Hope it works.

Bernard could be the son of Patrick Doherty and Catherine Hegarty seen in the 1901 census in house 24.

There is a Facebook group called South Inishowen Family History that covers the area of Donegal that you are researching. If you have had your DNA done they have a Gedmatch Project where you can compare your DNA with others from the same area.
