Title: McFarlane: 1861 census
Post by: lindy-lou on Monday 28 April 08 19:59 BST (UK)
Hi all
Can anyone shed a light on what a "Printfield" worker in Bonhill Dunbartonshire was???
My family are found living in Main St, Gardners Land....I would love to know where in Bonhill that was, most of them where born in an area called "Alenand"...just wondering if thats correct or is it misspelt?

cheers

Hi Lindy-lou

A printfield worker was a mill worker who printed cloth with dyes and inks. See this link for a list of old occupations: www.scotsfamily.com/occupations.htm

Thanks for help and the link...going to have a look now...the person I'm looking at seems to have changed occupations quite a bit through the years.

Hi,

I notice you have McFarlane in the Dumbartonshire area. Any chance you link with Robert, born 1829 in Cumbernauld? He was the son of Thomas McFarlane and Christian Grinlay. They married 1825, also in Cumbernauld.

Hi Hume24
I just started looking for McFarlanes last night, I'll let you know if your names appear along the line.
I'm double checking the names, dates etc at the moment and then if correct I'll start the quest for siblings etc.
cheers

We have a lot of McFarlanes in Dunbartonshire who all seemed to be in the textile trades. First I  found a Patrick/Peter McFarlane born in 1770's who married Grizal/Grace Park of Old Kilpatrick. Their sons were John, 1807, b Bonhill, and Peter, 1824, b Glasgow. Peter had 4 more sons, John, Peter, Alexander and James, between 1855 and 1866. Another Park sister, Margaret, married a John McFarlane in 1788. So far I have found sons John b 1788 and Peter b 1807. Also in the picture was a James McFarlane born about 1800 in Dunbartonshire. Two of his sons were Peter and Alexander, born 1825 onward and found in 1861 census. These people lived in Bonhill, Luss, Alexandria, Cardross, Renton and sometimes in Glasgow. They were printfield workers or weavers.  Do you think there is any connection with your McFarlanes?  Is is possible to attach a document showing all the names and dates? I'm not too familiar with how you do that on this site.

Hi , I am also researching Mcfarlanes.
I have Neil Mcfarlane babt 1827 Greenock and wife Elizabeth babt 1829 Dumbarton.
They had daughter Ellen (Helen?) babt 1861 in Scotland and later had 2 daughters & a son all born in Hull. I read somewhere on this site that they had a son also called Neil who died in infancy.
Do any of these names connect to you? I appreciate Mcfarlane is a common name in Scotland

In the Dunbartonshire MacFarlanes I know about, mostly weavers or printfield workers, there were no sons named Neil, so I don't think there was a close connection. Scottish people were pretty consistent about obeying the rules for naming children at that time, every child had to be named after grandparents or uncles, aunts or parents.

Adding to my earlier post of this thread, I have now found that Robert McFarlane's grandparents were Thomas McFarlane and Elisabeth Baird. They were of Condorrat (now part of Cumbernauld). When I was doing research into this branch of my family (my paternal grandmother's), I found a Thomas McFarlane of Condorrat sentenced to transportation during the Radical War ... however, not confirmed it the same person but would be interesting to see if it is. :)

If anyone comes across a Parlane McFarlane married to an Agnes Grant in the Old Kilpatrick area, give me a shout.   ;D I've been stuck at them for years. :)

I believe that Parlane had a brother named Duncan. Do you know anything of him?

Hi Heath,

I'm sorry but I know nothing about my Parlane McFarlane.  I've been at a bit of a dead end for years. I'm assuming you have a Duncan McFarlane, but what makes you think he's connected to Parlane?  Maybe between us we can work it out?

Christine.

do you know anything on the family? I have found that Parlane had a brother Duncan. Found on Clan McFarlane, which can be hard to follow as there is so many Mcfarlane's there.  i am looking for a Duncan that would have travel to Australia in 1840. Believed to have been age 30 at that time.

Don't trust anything you find in an online tree. Use it as a pointer to look for a primary source. If the Clan MacFarlane web site doesn't say where the information came from, ask them where they found it.

Hey there. I am currently researching my family tree.

Im wondering if there may be a connection? My Grandmother was Mary McMonagle McFarlane, married Charles Kennedy.
Mary was the daughter of Christopher Anderson McFarlane 1901 - ?? and Agnes Carroll - 1899 - 1961

Christopher's parents were George Anderson McFarlane 1859 - 1919 and Julia Anne Wilson 1856- 1943. The furthest I have been able to go back is to George's parents, Duncan McFarlane 1822 - 1893 and Catherine Anderson 1831 - ??

If anyone recognizes these names, please let me know - I'm beginning to struggle with the research :)

Is this the marriage 1853 Cardross?

Did Duncan die in Scotland as the DC should name both parents with mother's maiden name if known to the informant?

Yes, the married 6th July 1853 in Cardross.

I'm unsure where Duncan died as I can't find his death certificate. Are you connected to Duncan/Julia?

No connection as far as I'm aware.

Possible death;

MCFARLANE DUNCAN 75
1893
494/2 42 Renton (Dumbarton)

How do you know he died 1893?

Reading the older posts on this thread I noticed the long gap between the marriage date of Duncan McFarland and Ann Livingston (1756), and the first birth found for their children (1790). Also, female married 1756 would have been born possibly no later than 1740, making her beyond child bearing age by 1790. Found marriages for two different couples with the same name.
     1. Duncan McFarland and Ann Leviston or Livingston, 30th May 1756 at Glendevon, Perthshire. (Previously posted)
     2. Duncan McFarlane and Ann Livistone, 24th Sep. 1789 at Old Kilpatrick, Dumbartonshire. (More likely couple)

Placed the births previously posted (with one addition) in order. Dates are from OPR Birth Index - ScotlandsPeople and will be BAPTISM date, not the birth date. Several spelling variations for both surnames.
Isabel McFarlane    b 26 Apr. 1790 Old Kilpatrick, Dumbartonshire.
Parlane McFarlane  b   8 Jan. 1792 Old Kilpatrick.
Ann McFarlane       b 19 Oct. 1793 Old Kilpatrick.
Mary McFarlane      b 19 Oct. 1793 Old Kilpatrick.
John McFarlane      b 15 Sep. 1795 Old Kilpatrick.
James McFarlan      b 25 Apr. 1797 Od Kilpatrick.
Christian McFarlan  b 13 July 1800 Logie, Perthshire.
Margaret McFarlane b  4 July 1802 Logie, Perthshire.
     Christian McFarlane b 20 Sep.1804 Glasgow, Lanarkshire.
Isobal McFarlan       b 17 May 1807 Old Kilpatrick.
Duncan McFarlane   b 29 Jan. 1809 Old Kilpatrick.
Janet McFarlane      b 16 Sep. 1810 Old Kilpatrick.
Rebecca McFarlane  b   5 Nov. 1815 Old Kilpatrick.
