Hi

I have only just joined this site tonight. I discovered a Sives in my tree yesterday, and you are right about the name variants. If it is any help to you my Sives is Margaret Sives c1734 born possibly in Dirleton in East Lothian. She married William Muir (which has several name variants)c1734 North Berwick. They married in 1753, at North Berwick and settled in Dirleton. They had 5 children between 1754 and 1764.
I don't know if this info is useful, but you are welcome to use it for what it is worth.

Hi Fiona

Many thanks for info, unfortunately I have nothing else to add at the moment. I only discovered Margaret 48hours ago and I am Amazed at the information you have given me. Most of tree are from mid lothian and Ayr, and this East lothian link is new. I have got my info from the official scottish site which is on line. if I come across any further records from the parish registers i will let you know. I have been looking at google earth to check out the place names and notice that the places mentioned are not too far apart. I am also a member of another site that reunites people where i have my tree on line. If you needed to you could see my tree from this.

Greetings from the American branch of the Sives family.  My name is Kevin Sives.  Here's what I have on my family:

Archibald Sives (born abt. 1812) married Christina Simpson 20 Jun 1841 in Dunbar, E. Lothian, Scotland.

They had Mary & James Arthur (1844 - 1918)

James Arthur (1844 - 1918) married Emily Kempton in England, and emigrated to Falls, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania in the United States around 1870.

They had (Christina, James Arthur - 1869 - 1921, Fred, Julius, Bernice, George, and Miles).

James Arthur (1869-1921) married Mary Elizabeth Smith, and had the following children:

Milford (1892 - 1950), Mildred, Bernice, and Leland.

Milford married Florence A. Hartin, and they had the following children:

Arthur James (1922 -, my father), Evelyn, Dorothy, Ethel, Elizabeth, and Marie.

Arthur James (1922 - ) married Lois Mae Compton, and they had the following children: Kevin Arthur (me)  and Sheila Mae.

I haven't been able to connect Archibald Sives (born about 1812) to any of the Sives lines that were located in East Lothian at that time.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kevin,

Welcome to RootsChat. :)

I viewed Archibald Sives' death certificate in the hope it would give more detail on his background/parents for you to, perhaps, connect to the other Sives families, but I'm afraid it's not so good. :( He died Dec 24th 1895 in Belhaven, aged about 83 years. It was his neighbour there, Alex. Neilands, who registered his death and he didn't know his parents. He also gave Archibald's wife as Jessie Simpson, rather than Christina.

No help on the 1841 census. He is staying in Logan's Close, Dunbar, but no family with him.

Thank you so much for the information you provided on Archibald.  I did have Jessie listed as a nickname for his wife, but it's good to have confirmation!  One thing I forgot to mention in the original posting was that I've seen him referred to as "Frederick Archibald Sives", but he seems to have gone by Archibald during his lifetime.

There is a Sives genealogy posted by someone at:

http://www.freewebs.com/thetiesthatbindburnsandthomas/sivessibbessivisfamily.htm

that terminates one branch with an Archibald Sives, b. 1813 in Dirleton, E. Lothian, but I have been unable to connect "my" Archibald with that Archibald.  Although geographically it seems to match.

Thank you again!

Kevin

Hi Kevin

A Scottish & British Welcome to Rootschat no2  ;D

Good to see another posting on Rootschat for the Sives family from a Sives, with so much info 8)thanks,unfortunately can make no connection at the moment..

I have Sives info from East Lothian which after checking includes very few Archibalds.I will list what there is...

1.James Sivess and Mary Congalton had a son Archilbald Sivess b 8 Nov 1812 Prestonkirk, most possible parents for your Archilbald,if birth was registered in East Lothian.
2.Charles Sives and Susan Campbell had a son Archibald 18 Jan 1813 Dirleton, possible
3.John Sives and Helen Gourlay had a son Archibald b13 Sep 1791 Dirleton, not possible.

that is it no more Archibalds and no Frederick or Frederick Archilbald Sives listed for East Lothian.

Hope above has been helpful

must mention your website which was a big help to me :D

Hi Fiona.  Thank you so much for the information.  The census records I've viewed for Archibald list his place of birth as Prestonkirk, so more than likely the James & Mary you list are indeed his parents.

Here in America, Sives is a fairly rare last name - as a matter of fact, every Sives that I've ever spoken with on the Internet descends from Archibald's son James Arthur Sives, who emigrated around 1870, settling in Pennsylvania, raising a family, and eventually winding up in California (with a new wife), where he died in 1918.

Thank you again.

Hi Neil

I have checked through Sives info that I have collated but unfortunately I have nothing on William Sives/Mary Sutherland.
If you download William Sives death record 1955 from Scotlands People that should give you his parents names.

Neil,

It's your lucky day today. I have the details of your grandfather's death certificate, but only because they are on the same register page as a possible Cowe relative. He died February 20th 1955 at Belhaven Hospital and was 80 years old. His parents are listed as William Sives, ploughman (deceased) and Jane Sives m.s. [maiden surname] Foggo (also deceased).

Hopefully Fiona or others have details of William and Jane.

Hi Neil

info I have from SP,Jane Sives nee Foggo died 1920 aged 62 in Dunbar, makes her birth abt1858. Janes death record should tell you if she was married or widowed at the time of her death. On SP there is a William Sives died 1924 aged 72 North Berwick, makes his birth abt1852,you would need to view the death record to see if this was Janes husband. There is only 1 William Sives on 1861 freecen, aged 8 living at
"Gilchriston" Salton,E Lothian with his parents

Alexander 40 & Christina Sives 35
siblings
Agnes 15
George 12
John 11
WILLIAM 8
Lilly 4
Joan 2

if above proves correct I can give you Alexander and Christinas marriage date.

Hi Neil

I have not researched the Sutherland's. I had a quick look on SP and there is a marriage like you said for John Sutherland and Ann Fraser 1874,if you view the marriage that should give you the couples ages and parents names, you could then try to find their birth/deaths by working out when they were born and possible children if named after their parents or themselves.

Hello everyone. A pleasure to participate. I have a question for Kevin: You mention James Arthur and Mary Sives as children of Archibald Sives and Christina (Jessie) Simpson. My question is if you do not have a record of a third son named Archibal Sives 1845-1916 (since I have seen him on a site as another son of this marriage). Is there any possibility of knowing this?
Waiting for response.

I am descended from Archibald Sives and Carilone Philpotts (they are my great grandparents)
Thank you very much and greetings to all.

Hi norbersives,

Just to point out that KSives or Kevin has not been back on this site since 09 July 2009, so he may not reply. If he still accepts notifications by email, you maybe lucky, but I think you can interact with other "Sives" followers on this site.

Hi Norberto,

I have done a few searches for children of Archibald Sives and Christian Simpson, ( I left first name, Christian, out when searches done), on FreeReg, https://www.freereg.org.uk (https://www.freereg.org.uk) also Scotland People website, https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk) and the LDS site, https://www.familysearch.org (https://www.familysearch.org). The only result that I can get is James Sives, on all 3 of these sites.

I cannot find a Mary or Archibald Sives.

Hi Norberto,

On FreeReg, it states James Sives was born 15 March 1844, and baptised on 7th April 1844 at Dunbar Parish Church.   Father, given as Archibald Sives who was a Labourer and resided at Belhaven, near Dunbar.

Have you got any details of Mary and Archibald, the other children of Archibald Sives and Christian Simpson?

Hi again,

I have found a daughter of Archibald Sives and Christian Simpson, Mary in the 1851 census, and the reason I did not find her birth record earlier, was she was born in England around 1848. There was no mention of another child called Archibald in all census up to 1891.

Hi again,

I have searched on FreeBMD   https://www.freebmd.org.uk (https://www.freebmd.org.uk), and found a birth for Mary Sives in Berwick Volume 25 page 16, on the quarter of September 1847, so she would be 3 on 1851 census.

I also checked for Archibald Sives, and the first one I find is 1855 in the June quarter, in the town of Penkridge in Staffordshire. So not in your timescale of 1845. Do you have any birth details for your Archibald?

Tom

Hi Norberto.

Have you details of his death certificate, would an Argentinian Death Certificate give his parent's names, Scottish ones do, but no knowledge of Argentinian certificates.

His birth of 1845, do you have any proof of his date. Not finding anything in Scottish websites.

What about Carline Phiphotts, what were her origins?

Trying to see something in their children's names and possible use of Scottish naming pattern. This was not always used but it used in at least some way, it can give clues to family first names (see this guide for example www.halmyre.abel.co.uk/Family/naming.htm).

You have probably been through this site already, just adding some details as they differ a little from the children you listed. Not complete.

1882 Herbert Archibald Sives
1883 Charlotte Elizabeth
1885 James William Sives
1886 John Tierce (Pierce?) Sives
1888 Mary Helen Sives
1890 Caroline Pierce Sives
1892 Sarah Jane Sives
1894 Harriet Kidd Sives
1896 Archibald Sives
1898 Charles Sidney Sives

http://search.freefind.com/find.html?id=20088430&pageid=r&mode=ALL&n=0&_charset_=UTF-8&bcd=%C3%B7&query=sives

No clues on parents or from witnesses' names from the 1881 marriage www.argbrit.org/FlorencioVarela/FVarela_marrs1857-1909.htm

Cannot see the family easily in the 1895 Argentinian National census which is a pity  :-\  https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1410078 Have you been able to locate them on this, norbersive?

According to Family Search, marriage certs should be quite detailed and include parents' names www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Argentina_Marriages_(FamilySearch_Historical_Records)  Haven't been able to find anything indexed on their marriage collection
www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1520572

However, these are Roman Catholic records.  Archibald Sives and Catherine Philpott may have belonged to a different denomination. Presbyterian likely as the records of the children's baptisms are from the Scots Church in Buenos Aires, maybe this one http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/scotsinargpat/scotschurch.htm

A guide to what may be found on death certs here www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Argentina_Civil_Registration#Deaths_.28defunciones.29

I thank you all for your contribution. I am going to try to go to Cañuelas to the Civil Registry and see if I find out if there is any document that indicates the names of Archibald Sives and Caroline Phillpotts.
I will post shortly to see if I have found anything.
Thank you very much.

No, but they came to get it.
I transcribe the information that happened to me:

It confirms that he was baptised on the 3 of June 1855. His parents were Archibald and Mary Sives.

His father was a 'Farm Bailiff' and they lived in Busbury.

This confirms the information given in census records.

If you would like to see the images I can send them to you.

Does that mean born in 1845 but not baptised until 1855  as a 10 year old? What census did you find that information on. You are not getting this info from an Ancestry tree, by any chance?

Hi Norberto,

That is good news, it will be good to see it, although, you may have to amend your tree, due to age difference etc.

I have seen an Archibald and Mary Sives family in 1861 census in Staffordshire, England, but young Archibald is shown as 5, so born in 1855 probably. So that is 10 years out, and he was born in England although his father, Archibald was Scottish.

Been away a few weeks and just catching up...

Has there been any confirmation from Argentinian records on Archibald's approximate birth year?

Worried about the 10 yr gap that Tom has already mentioned before (1845 v. 1855 birth year).

There are numerous family trees showing Archibald, son of Archibald and Mary (Alcock) Sives, as having married a Rachel Brooks in January 1883 in Carnock, Staffordshire.

1891 census for this couple here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:42RT-53Z and 1901 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9TS-LDQ

I can't see anywhere details showing Archibald's father's name from the 1883 marriage cert to be able to confirm that he is indeed the son of Archilbald Snr. But, enough there to make me concerned that we don't have the correct roots for Archilbald in Argentina...

There is a possible death showing for the Archibald, son of Archibald Sives and Mary Alcock in 1940 in Bradford, aged 85 (fitting well an 1855 birth year). This is also where Archibald and wife Rachel showed in later years. Rachel died in 1922 it seems. Cannot be the same Archibald that you are searching for and no other candidate showing in England in those times that you are looking at  :-\

I have a question for Tom Buchanan.
I am trying to find BDM details for Margaret Sives who married John Law at Haddington, East Lothian on 16 June 1787. They had a daughter Euphemia Law on 8 Jan 1790 who married Neil Buchanan on 11 Jan 1811 in Athelstaneford. I can’t find birth records for any of these
people.
I’m also wondering if we are related. Neil is my g/g/g/grandfather.

Cheers,

Had a quick look at my tree, and cannot see any Neil Buchanans in it. So I have not made any connection yet.

I will have a search on your relatives.

Tom Buchanan

NB I have found the marriage of Neil Buchanan to Euphan(derivative of Euphemia) Law on 11/01/1811 at Athelstaneford. Euphemia Law was baptised 17/01/1790.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for finding this record although I have seen it before. The dates are about right but I can’t find any records to confirm it. I also have some doubts because there don’t seem to be any Anne’s in that side of the family. Neil could also be known as ‘Cornelius’ because that name is very prevalent in the family.

It’s a shame we are not related, as I was hoping to find out more information about my great, great, grandmother Margaret who emigrated to Australia in 1854. It’s difficult to find records from Scotland to assist with research.

Looking at the details in this Sives feed makes me feel like we are all related in some way. The names are all familiar we just need to link them all together.

Cheers,
Lenore

Hi Lenore,

I have checked my family tree, but do not have any Cornelius or Neil in my Buchanans yet. My earliest Buchanan or Buchannan, is Archibald Buchannan b 1730 approx, birth record not found, I have his marriage to Isabel Thomson in the "Old Parish Records" of Tranent, East Lothian on 9th Nov, 1755.

As you are no doubt aware that Official Registration did not start until 1855, prior to that, we have to rely on the Old Parish Records (OPR) of the Church of Scotland. It was not compulsory to register BMD, as it cost some money, which some families could not afford, so OPR are helpful but do not give 100% cover of all Scotland.

I will keep searching for my Buchanans and hopefully in the future, can find a link somewhere.

Hi people.
A lot of familiar members coming up in this thread.  Long time no speak.  Hope you're all well.
I only noticed this old thread because Lenore has been in contact with me directly and I was doing a random search of the boards.
I too am descended from Sives.  The most recent being my 3xg grandparents, Mary Sives 1798 and Cornelius Fortune 1791 who married in Athelstaneford in 1822.

Just wondering - have any of you that are directly descended from a Sives taken a DNA test?  I'd be interested in comparing results.

Hello Monica. How are you?
I continue with the investigation of the surname Sives and trying to unite it with the family of Scotland / England.
I have a fact that my great-grandfather could be the son of Archibald Sives (1840) and Helen Robertson (1848)
Parents: john, joan (johanna)
siblings: john, joan, james b, janet
half brothers: john, alexander
Do you have any certificate that I can join this data?
Sorry for the inconvenience, but I'm asking you since it's a little difficult for me with the language.
I do not speak English very well.

Your English is very good, Norbierto. No te preocupes de eso!

Not sure we are on the right track with the latest possibilities and names unfortunately. Archibald, son of Archibald Sives and Helen Robertson was born on 1 June 1866 in Dundee Scotland. If there is any connection, it would be with the father not the son b. 1866. If we go with the birth year you have for your Archibald, we are looking at a birth year for him c. 1840s. Archibald and Helen Robertson were married in July the year before, 1865, also in Dundee.

Not seeing them in 1871 but I think something happens with Archibald Snr born c.1840 as Helen shows as married to a John Gorrie on the 1881 census. In the household is her 14yr old son Archibald Sives:

John Gorrie 35 Calender Worker b. Dundee
Helen Gorrie 40 b. Cupar Angus
Archd Gorrie 14 mill worker b. Dundee

Address: 294 Hawkhill, St Peter Angus

Helen Robertson died in Dundee aged 55 in 1894 (other names Sives and Gorrie also show on the index for her).

No sign of a death in Scotland for Archibald born c. 1840s. No sign also of a marriage between John Gorrie and Helen either.

Monica:
Then my Archibald of 1845 could be this Archibald of 1840 who married Helen, and then I migrated to Argentina.
It would have to find that connection.
I ask: Is there no possibility to get a record of people who migrated, for example Argentina from Dondee, Scotland? in those years
Also thanks for all the information you gave me

Good source for shipping manifests can be https://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-united-kingdom-records-in-travel-and-migration or Ancestry.com (less so for what you need as it concentrates a lot on North American records rather than South America.

Lilias Marion Sives and Andrew Johnston had a son called Alexander Sives Johnston. He was born 1885 and he later became a shale miner/platelayer.
Alexander married Mary Jane Marshall Thom on 27th September 1907 at the Manse, Kirkliston, Linlithgow.
Alexander died on 3rd April 1940 at 52 Front Street, Mossend. It also has Mossend, West Calder. Not sure if it's meant to have two places.
Mary Jane was a housekeeper and she was born on 25th July 1882 at Meadowbank North Lodge, Kirkliston, Edinburgh.

My great-grandfather Archibald Sives (born approximately in 1845) married Caroline Philpott (1862-1850) and they had their first child in 1882 Heribert Archibald Sives (1882-1933)
Could it be the same Archibald Sives (1840-?) Who married Helen Robertson? in first nuptials on 06 JUL 1865 Dundee, Angus, Scotland. And on 01 JUN 1866 Archibald Sives was born in DUNDEE, ANGUS, SCOTLAND.

What you say?

I do not find anything about Caroline Philpott, daughter of William Henry Philpott and Caroline Pierce.

I did do a little digging around the Archibald Sives, husband of Helen Robertson.  He was a sailmaker by trade. Hence my earlier reference earlier to him being at sea. We have this Archibald with his family in earlier censuses. Then his marriage to Helen in 1865 and the birth of son Archibald the following year.

He then disappears. No Scottish death for him that I can see.

I haven't got my notes to hand which are at home. From memory, Helen married in the early 1870s as a widow. She then shows with new husband and son Archibald in later censuses.

Son Archibald became a baker and a pastry chef and, at some point, joined the merchant navy I believe. He married early 1900s in Dundee from memory. No clues on his father Archibald other than he showed as deceased.

We have not been able to find Archibald, Helen and Archibald Jnr in the Scottish 1871 census which would help.

An outside possibility that this Archibald could have disappeared on his travels by sea and left Helen and child? Then started his new life some years later with Carolina in Argentina?

Just guesses really...

For you now I think it is very crucial to find some documentary proof in Argentina from either Archibald's marriage or death registrations. Have you had any success in following up on this?

With this type of search, it can help so much to have at least one hard fact to link back to.

This is the only Scottish Archibald Sives that we have really to follow up on, who is close to what you have for him in terms of bio. The fact that there is no trace of him in Scotland after the birth of his son Archibald in 1866 keeps him as a strong possible for now.

I'm following this thread again with a great deal of interest because of my connection to the Sives family.  My 3xg grandmother was a Sives b1798 and I think I have the line going back to mid 17th C.

I'm actually going through to East Lothian next week for a couple of days, and top of my to do list is visit cemeteries and churchyards in and around Dirleton, Athelstaneford, East Fortune, Prestonkirk etc.

The map below is a very rough draft of the places I intend to try and visit over the 2 days.  I need to plan it slightly better before next week - have only just this morning made arrangements to go.

Dave

PS - I'd still really like to find some other living descendant(s) of the Sives family that have taken a DNA test.  I suspect any Sives DNA I have inherited will be minimal, but it might be enough to get a small match with someone and help me map which parts of the DNA segments are shared.

Norberto, I have been able to find the Sives on the Argentinian 1895 National Census. Archibald indexed as Archivaldo SIBES.

See the family's entry here on Family Search (you now need to be signed in to view) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MW7J-V8G

You will see that on this, Archibald is showing as born c. 1841...taking us closer to the Dundee Archibald potentially?

I have also found Helen Robertson and son Archibald Sives on the 1871 census in Dundee. It is a poor transcription which is why they haven't been easy to find to date!

Elen Sever 30 b. Cupar W??, Forfarshire
Achabala Siver 4 son b. Dundee

Address: No 45 Wynd Ross Buck Lank, Dundee

I can't tell from the transcript I am looking at what Helen's marital status is showing as, ie married or widowed. This detail will be on the original image on Scotlands People.

Been checking Valuation records around that time, came up with the following,

SIVES, THOMAS
Tenant Occupier
DWELLING HOUSE NO 45 SMALLS WYND
DUNDEE

I know address is slightly different, but the "Sives" name is interesting.

I do not have the names of your brothers would be so kind to pass me your direct relatives (brothers and their wives and children).
I await your answers.
Thank you
