Title: Ross Lane, Dublin 1865
Post by: c-side on Monday 05 May 08 00:17 BST (UK)
It appears that Ross Lane no longer exists but assume that it was in the same area as Ross Road and fell within the C of I parish of St. Brides.  Can anyone confirm this and advise which Catholic church/churches would be used in this area.

Hi c-side

This is a link the the Dublin Street Directory of 1862, where Ross Lane is mentioned as being in the parish of St. Nicholas Within - hope this helps

Thanks Jaylay

Very useful website.  I'm new to my Irish ancestors and need to learn a bit more about the area.

While looking through older postings , I saw your yours
Ross Lane was between Kennedys Lane and BrideStreet. There were 17 premises there some of which were in poor condition by the 1890s. It existed from the 1750s but presumably because of condition/unsuitability for modernization , the premises had either collapsed or had been demolished in general reconstruction of the area as a remedy for the city's chronic housing problems.
General behaviour of the inhabitants by the 1880s was lively.

Thanks for that, Quaxer.

It explains why they might have left for England in the 1860s.

I've never thought of this bunch as being in the slightest 'lively' but I'd like to think of them with a bit of character  ;D

My great grandfather was living at 7 Ross Lane, Dublin when one of his sons was born.

I could not find it, but thanks you to this post, I now know where it.

In the old script when writing ''SS'' it used appear as ''fs''
If you look here on this map under St Nicholas Church you will see it described as
Kennedy's RofsL

Useful map, thank you.  Where did 'Kennedys' come into it, do you know?

My greatgrandfather Michael McCormack was living at 8 Ross Lane in 1878 on his Marriage Cert. My greatgrandmother was living in Plunket Street which was just around the corner.  I believe both streets are gone now.  I believe the streets made way for social developments by the Guinness family.  Thanks for the great map, I'm thrilled to know where they actually lived.

Thank you for this post - my ancestors lived at 8 Ross as well! In June of 1878 when their first son was born.
