Title: 1851 census - MOUNSEY
Post by: suemuffy on Saturday 17 May 08 16:57 BST (UK)
I am looking for a Thomas Harrison Mounsey born in either Westmorland or Cumberland and married to Jane (maiden name probably Stanley).  His daughter Mary Elizabeth was born in 1855 and baptised at Ambleside and a later daughter was born in Liverpool but baptised at Keswick.
I have no DOB but his wife was born in 1830/1 at Keswick.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks

Hi Sue,
this is not what you are looking for but there may be a clue somewhere (I know it looks very complex from you other posts)

Hi heywood,

Thanks, Thomas was definitely the father of Mary and Jessie but there may be a link.  I am looking for any clues at the moment as I cannot find birth, marriage or death records for him, even changing the spelling to Mouncey, Mouncy etc.
Second post looks promising............

Do you have his occupation from birth certificate?

1851 has two possibilities

HO107; Piece: 1501; Folio: 86; Page: 40

b 1829 Askham living Islington Middlesex- a post office clerk

and

HO107; Piece: 2441; Folio: 106; Page: 14
Troutbeck
Thomas Mounsey 23 yrs head unmarried tailor with journey man b Patterdale

mind you these seem to turn up in 1861 both with wives Jane but not your daughters  ???

The one born Askham is in Durham and is a pattern maker- has a daughter Mary A b 1855

The other is Thomas H with a son Joseph H and is a tailor in Birmingham - so is not him either but the H is interesting. :'(

Well done!!!

On LDS:
Thomas Mounsey Baptised 6/2/1828 at Martindale to John Mounsey and Jane also a Joseph Harrison Mounsey to the same parents in 1835.
Don't know why it didn't come up on a search.

Oops, another post, yes, possibly a tailor,,his wife was a dressmaker.
And another, oh, That's odd, his wife was widowed by 1861 but has a son by 1871, so I start to wonder???

Thank you heywood

Sue

so maybe the jane I found was the wrong jane   ???

oh Mum don't confuse me further  ;D

1841 has two Thomas Mounseys born 1828 (ish with it being 1841) both in Barton parish.
1) The one already found with the Harrison connection

2) HO107; Piece 1162; Book: 7;  Folio:  ; Page: 1

Thomas Mounsey 13 yrs male servant

Kings Arms Inn Hartsop and Patterdale

Thomas the tailor is the 'H' one in 1861 and has been transcribed as b Barley but could read Barton on actual census.

I wonder if the Harrison is a family name and these two may be cousins??

Hello again,
there are also some Thomases born Cumberland. If you don't already have them, I think it would be advantageous to get some of the birth certificates of Jane's children to see what they show re father- name and occupation.
The Family Search entry for Mary Elizabeth is a submission from a member so there isn't enough proof re the details. There is a birth entry however on Free BMD as you say for Kendal.

Jessie's entry on Family Search is from the records at Saint John's in the Vale by Keswick - there may be info in the church records. The date is 1 May 1859 but she was born 1857.

Emma Jane's entry on Family search is for Nov 1859 birth and Dec 1859 christening but I can't find an entry on Free BMD. However she does get married as Emma Jane Mounsey. :)

As you say there doesn't seem to be an obvious marriage.
These are really just my musings and trying to make sense of it all  ???
best wishes
heywood

Hi heywood,

Sorry to have got off last night and left you beavering away.
Thanks for the 1891 entry for Jane, I did not have this, she died in 1896.
However I have now been told there is a marriage certificate for Emma and John and that her father Thomas was a tailor and his birthplace was originally thought to be Penrith, Cumberland, as to the accuracy, I can't say. There is an entry for Penrith on LDS for 2/5/1829 but also one for a marriage of the parents in May of the same year.
Jessie was born in Liverpool and it looks as though they waited to have her baptised in their original church, perhaps they didn't intend to settle in Liverpool and then Thomas died (or disappeared?) and that was that.

Regards
Sue

Hello Suemuffy,
I am trying to sort out Thomas Harrison Mounsey. My interest is with his wife Jane Stanley. I believe she is the daughter of Timothy and Elizabeth (nee Smith) Stanley and baptised 19 Aug 1830 at Crosthwaite. I wonder if this 1841 census is correct:-
1841 cen.
Sandwick, Martindale, Barton, Westmorland
John Mounsey, aged 40, Ag Lab, born Westmorland
Jane Mounsey, aged 35, born Westmorland
Thomas Mounsey, aged 12, born Westmorland (is this Thomas Harrison?)
Ann Mounsey, aged 8, born Westmorland
Joseph Mounsey, aged 4, born Westmorland (may be Joseph Harrison baptised 1837)
Richard Mounsey, aged 1, born Westmorland

Regards, Pam
