Title: Robert Grieve of Lilliesleaf
Post by: mgscott on Wednesday 21 May 08 05:41 BST (UK)
I'm hoping someone can help me find some information about Robert Grieve who married Janet Shackleton and had a daughter, Janet Grieve born about 1850 in Lilliesleaf, Rox.  I can find nothing about them so any help would be appreciated.

Hi  :)

I'm having a bit of a problem locating this family on the 1851 census.

I have found a marriage from the IGI (extracted)

26 May 1837, Roberton, Selkirk - Robert Grieve and Janet Shackelton

I have found a baptism (SP)

22 Oct 1837 - Janet Grieve, Selkirk - to Robert Grieve and Janet Shackelton

I haven't found a baptism for a Janet/Jane or Jessie around 1850 in Roxburgh or Selkirk

The only family in Lilliesleaf in the 1851 Census that matches your description is this one:

Hermiston, Lilliesleaf
795 ED 3 Page 2

Robert Grieve, 56, farm servant, b.Wilton, Rox
Janet, 46, b. Hobkirk or Ashkirk (poor writing)
Robert, 25, ag lab, b. Wilton or Kirkton or Linton
Margaret, 14, b. Yarrow
Joan or Jean, 12, b. Yarrow
David, 8, b. Yarrow
Mary, 7, b. Wilton

I'll check on the later censuses but can you tell me from where you got your information?

Regards

Thank you so very much for your efforts Gadget.  the Dec 23, 1870 marriage reg of Alexander Scott (my grandfather) and Janet Grieve (age 20) reports her parents as Robert Grieve, (cc: sawyer)  and Janet Grieve (MS Shackleton) deceased.  the wedding took place at Sinton Gardens in Ashkirk Parish.

i hope this helps because i've used up my 'capabilities'.

thanks.

Hi

Did they emigrate? I can't see a death for her which would be another check on her parents?

If so, when?

The 1871 census has her aged 20:

Dimpleknowe Cottage, Ashkirk, Selkirk
781 ED 3

Alexander Scott, 29, Thatcher, b. Ashkirk
Janet, 20, Thatcher, b. Lilliesleaf
Mary,mother, 65, wid, ag lab b. Ashkirk

yes, you found them Gadget. Alexander and Janet lived at  several cottages in and around Ashkirk along with his widowed mother, Mary.  When Mary died they promptly emmigrated to Canada in 1880.  i've been lucky enough to find them listed on the passenger list of their ship.

i had always assumed that  Janet's parents, Robert and Janet Grieve, lived nearby because the 1871 census reported her as born in Lillitesleaf, Rox, which is just around the bend from Ashkirk.  But, oddly or not so oddly, i haven't been able to find a thing about them.

Any and all ideas welcomed.

Hello again

This is very strange. There is no sign of Janet, b. circa 1851 on the 1861 - either as Janet, Jessie, Jean or Jane with either Shackleton or Grieve (variations) as a surname in either Roxburgh or Selkirk.

What I have found, and it's the nearest to a family yet,  is this:

Death 27 July 1866, Lilliesleaf:

Robert Grieve, farm servant, aged 37. Illegitimate. Married to Jessie Patterson.

Parents - Robert Scott, Ag Lab (reputed father) and Margaret Rankin, m.s Grieve (deceased)

I then found this marriage:

Robert Grieve and Jessie Patterson 12 Feb 1853, Lilliesleaf

Children of this couple on IGI:

3 July 1853 - Mary (mother as Margaret - I believe in error see below)
18 Oct 1855 - Margaret
29 May 1857 - William
15 March 1859 - Helen
17 Feb 1861 - William

and:

1861:

Easter Middles, Lilliesleaf
795 ED 3

Robert Grieve, 31, ploughman
Jessie, 27,
Mary, 7
Margaret, 5,
Ellen, 2,
William, 1 month

all b. Lilliesleaf

I don't see either a death or birth for a Janet Shackleton that would fit with her being the mother of Janet.

Neither can I find a Robert Grieve, sawyer.

All I can suggest is that the family (above) might be penciled in as the strongest  possibles.

Jessie Patterson might have re-married after Robert's death. I'll check this out.

No, Jessie didn't remarry and died in Galashiels in 1894.

Another possibility:

1851
Chester Knowe, Bowden (next parish to Lilliesleaf see http://scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-borders.htm )
783 ED 4 Page 10

Robert Grieve, widower, 33, ag lab, b. Ashkirk
James, 9, b. Bowden
Robert, 2,  b. Bowden
Jannet, 4 months,  b. Bowden
Janet Mason, 21, house servant, b. Lilliesleaf
Helen Waldi(?), 14, house servant, b. Ashkirk

I'll check this family out*

Thank you so much Gadget.  I am such an amateur.  what you have found is so very interesting.  maybe i can add some fuel by telling you that Allexander and Janet's first born was Janet Shackleton Scott (born sept 6, 1871, Dimplekknowe) - she married  in Canada and went by the nickname...wait for it.....Jesse.  While thier second child was born  Mary 25, 1874, at Sinton Gardens and named.....John Grieve Scott.  Happy to add to the mystery.

Hi
is there any connection to James Grieve and Janet Wight ?
He died at Sinton Gardens in 10 July 1871 and she died there 2 February 1863, she was from Bowden.
He was born at Thirlstone, Ettrick 22 Nov 1783 to Walter Grieve and Agnes Kerr they were married at Ettrick in 10 January 1783
they had, confirmed by death records
Isabel about 1809, Bowden she died 1894 at Broomhill, Selkirk, Selkirkshire, Scotland, she was married to George Hogg
William about 1827 at Ashkirk, died 30 July 1902 Synton Mill Farm, a descendant of his is a DNA match to me which has me trying to tie up thier Grieves to mine.
They had at Ashkirk Andrew 1820 and John 1824 the only two children i could find for them.
one of Isabel's children was with William on a census which led me to her.
So above Margaret Grieve could well be a child of theirs, as there is a big gap in baptismal records for the family
Jessie 1818 and Thomas 1830 and Walter 1840 show on census records with them
