Title: Bateman in Ware 1891
Post by: Keith Bateman on Wednesday 19 January 05 13:39 GMT (UK)
Hi All,

I am trying to place the following family who on the 1891 census should be:

Elizabeth Bateman                        52 born Hitchen, Herts
James (or Jeremy) Bateman    - son 14 born Ware
Lizzie Bateman                       dau 11 born Ware
Mary Bateman                        dau 17 born Ware

In the 1881 census they were all living in Ware
In the 1901 census Mary & Lizzie are still single and living separately in Ware and James has married and is living in Edmonton, Middlesex

Cheers

Keith

Hi,as far as I can ascertain the 1891 shows James working as a Barge boy on the narrow boat "Volunteer" moored in Shoreditch on the night of the census. The age he gives is 18.RG12/253 Folio 54
Was Lizzie Christianed by that name or could she be Elizabeth? Regards,Pete 8)

Hi Pete,

WELL DONE !!!
James - no wonder I was struggling to find him - 4 years overage - wonder if that was to work on the boats like his father did?

What a silly question to ask about my Elizabeth !! ;D ;D ;D

She was christened Elizabeth Emma in 1879 she was called Lizzie on the 1881 census and I think Elizabeth in 1901

Mum was Elizabeth on her Wedding Certificate in 1869 and 1871 census - she was Eliz.Th on the 1881 census.

Mary's full name was Mary Jane.

That's the first name of a boat I have been able to find  - thanks AGAIN

Cheers

Keith

Hi Pete,

Well - Well - Well - adopted !!!!! ??? ??? ???

If you could find Mum - it might explain things - I thought I had her death in 1900 - but maybe I'm wrong - I think Husband James died in 1884 which might explain the farming out of the children.

Do I now have to put adopted parents in to my Tree? ;D

Thanks again

Keith

Hi Pete,

Can I be a real Pain!!  ??? ???

Regarding James and his boat - does it list the rest of the crew - as per households??
Was wondering if there were any relations I could recognise?

Don't worry if its not that simple.

Don't want to waste any goodwill!! :-* :-*

Cheers

Hi Keith

The three barges are listed together on the census and one would assume that they were somewhere nearby - at lease within that census district which wouldn't have covered that big an area.

"Little Nell"

William SALMON head unmarried 42 barge captain b.Sawbridgeworth Herts

"Ada"

Josiah PAGE head mar 30 barge mate b.Old Cross Herts
Nelly PAGE wife 30 b.Linn Norfolk
William PAGE son 11 b.Waltham Herts

Years ago, I corresponded with somebody researching a SALMON/HAGGER relationship and they worked (if I remember correctly) barges down the River Lea.

Best wishes

Hi Nicky & casalguidi,

Thanks  - Once again this site comes up Trumps!!

I will send you a PM with my email address Nicky as I would like original -even tho you have given me all the information - that's funny about her name as I think is was transcribed wrongly on the 1881 census - again as Batman.

Pity there is no one else on board "Little Nell" - but that's not your fault casalguidi !!!! ;D ;D ;D

Don't think I have a "Hagger" in my tree - yet - but a few Sammons/Salmonds

Thanks again

Keith
