Title: Miss Sal Betchly from Balcombe, please stand up!
Post by: kizmiaz on Wednesday 19 January 05 22:41 GMT (UK)
Hi

I have found a reference to an ancestor of mine by the name of Sal Betchly. She married Nicholas Breeden in Balcombe, Sussex on 10th April 1749, but I have been unable to find out anything at all about her. I am not sure if her name is short for Sally or Sarah or if it is a name on its own.

The Sussex Family History Group website has a list of tombstones and burials, and there are dozens of different names that could easily be transformed into Betchly with very little imagination, but I don't know which it could be. For example, the following are listed - BACHELEYE, BACHELY, BAGELEY, BATCHLIER, BECHELLYE, BETCHELEY among many others, and I can imagine that any one of these could perhaps be a possible candidate.

Does anyone have any sort of record, or just a hint of who she was? Sally (or Sarah or whatever) Betchly (or whatever) would have been born about 1720-1730 I guess, and somewhere in the vicinity of Balcombe.

Many thanks to anyone who can offer a vague glimpse into this mysterious person

Not about the person you are looking for but I notice that you are researching the Prevetts Balcombe and West Hoathley.

My Abraham Jenner from Balcombe married a Sarah Prevett from Ardingley at West Hoathley. Have you any info on that please.

I only have a slight interest in the Prevetts, due to an ancestor bearing the name, but without any direct lineage. He was born to a widow who retained her late husbands name.

The only things I could find out about your Sarah Prevett from IGI is that she was born on 17th March 1807 to Richard Prevat and Ann (listed as Sarah Prevat on IGI), christened 19th July 1807, and is listed as Sarah Prerat on IGI for her marriage to Abraham Jenner on 9th January 1830.

Doing some quick searches brings up Richard Prevetts marriage to Ann Budgen in Ardingly on 8th August 1796. Couldn't see a date of birth for Richard, but it looks like Ann was born 17th May 1771, christened 23rd June 1771 and was the daughter of Thomas Budgen of West Hoathly and Ann Carter of Ardingly. They married 13th October 1768.

It is possible that they are relatives of the few Prevetts I have included in my tree, but these were slightly later, mid to late 19th century, and I have very few details about them.

Hope this helps.

Kizmiaz,
This is the marriage which gives her name as SARAH.  Checked the Sussex Marriage Index for the occurance of the name BETCHLY & found most in E. Grinstead & CUCKFIELD, both very close to BALCOMBE,
Jane

 From the Sussex Marriage Index:
Balcombe, West Sussex,  Date: 10 Apr 1749:
 Nicholas BREEDEN, Cuckfield
 Sarah BETCHLY, otp (B)

Thanks for confirming her name as Sarah Betchly.

Now, if I could only get a handle on her parents, I may be able to make a bit of headway. IGI has nothing I could see on either birth or christening of a Sarah Betchly, unless she was born elsewhere and moved to Balcombe. I would guess she was born no earlier than the early 1720s (her son was born in 1750), and I'd also imagine the chances are high that she was a local lass.

These are male Betchly (with spelling variants) marriage's of likely dates for Sarah's parents.  None in Balcombe apart from one in 1736 which would be too late.

Thanks

I would assume that the first two relate to the same people, since I can't imagine that two different Johns, both from Sluagham, with similar surnames would be marrying two different Marys again with similar surnames on the same day in a place like rural Sussex.

This one looks to me to be the most likely candidate, so I'll have a look and see what I can find...

                                                                           -----

....Well, what I found was that this is not the couple I need. Ann Godsmarke was a widow, born Ann Humphrey. She was born in 1668, so would have been in her 50s by the time Sarah Betchly was born, even at a rough guess. She was definitely in mid 40s on her wedding day. Not actually impossible, but extremely unlikely even today.

The search goes on...

Kizmiaz,
yes, the first one is the marriage licence & the second the actual marriage.
How about these two? Quite possible that Sal/sarah was the youngest child, born in the 1720's.  The next male BETCHLY marriage, earlier than the 1709 one is in 1697, a bit too early & it's a QUAKER marriage in COWFOLD as are the preceeding male marriage's all JOHN BETCHLY in COWFOLD, 1693 & 1695 then the 1697.  All these parishes are very close to each other.  If you feel the Horsham marriage might bear fruit, let me know as I have the Horsham registers on fiche.  They are pretty grotty for reading but I'll have a go...just let me know,
Jane

Thanks

Both fall into the "definitely maybe" category. Its only a couple of hours leisurely walk from either place to Balcombe, so not outside the realms of possibility.  But where I go to find out which is which is another matter...

It is interesting to me that the Bolney marriage is between a Bechley and a Geell. If that is a soft "G" in Geell, it is possibly a mis-transliteration of Cheal, another old branch of my family.

I think I will let this twig rest a while until I've tidied up some of the rest of the tree and may come back to it in the future. Other bits are feeling a bit light on information.

Thanks for all the help. I now know her proper name and have some possibles for her parents for another time.

Good idea.  It might make more sense later.
